Chapter 1052: Chapter 1037: Taking Shelter (Part 3)
"But the rain is too heavy now. Once it stops, I’ll go down to check it out. If it’s suitable, we’ll figure out a way to get him in."
Lei Tong and Old Xu both have military backgrounds, so climbing up and down isn’t an issue for them.
The challenge lies in rescuing the boy. Old Xu can’t just leave the child on the rooftop while he and Lei Tong go downstairs to "enjoy life."
With hope, the wait becomes less agonizing.
Perhaps due to Old Xu’s change in mood, the seemingly unending torrential rain raged for about 20 minutes before finally ceasing. The oppressive clouds gradually cleared, revealing the crescent moon’s true form.
Action! Old Xu is a swift person, and he dislikes dawdling. As soon as the rain stopped, he immediately stepped out of the room.
"Captain, this... take it with you." Lei Tong unsheathed Tiger’s Fang and handed it over.
Considering that he already had the Long Spear as a base, Old Xu did not refuse and took it, gripping it with his teeth for easy access when needed.
Since it was already dark, Old Xu wasn’t worried about zombies at the base of the building noticing him.
His only concern was confirming there were no "Climbers" around the wall.
Carefully peeking outside the wall, Old Xu quickly scanned around.
He repeated this 4 or 5 times, thoroughly confirming the condition of the wall.
"How is it, Captain?" Seeing Xu Renjie retreat, Lei Tong quickly stepped forward.
"It’s fine. There are no beasts nearby."
Old Xu raised his hand in an OK gesture, his words easing Lei Tong’s anxiousness somewhat.
"After I leave, you’ll be responsible for him. Kids aren’t like adults. If he acts up emotionally, cut him some slack." Old Xu patted Lei Tong’s shoulder, gave some instructions, and then leapt onto the wall, deftly moving to the nearby drainpipe.
Due to the recent heavy rain, all the building’s parts were inevitably wet.
This undoubtedly posed a great risk to Old Xu’s climbing. Without some skill, a slight misstep could lead to a fall to the bottom, becoming a meal.
But Old Xu is no ordinary person; his skill in climbing is absolutely solid.
However, to avoid alerting the zombies below, he deliberately moved slowly.
Bit by bit, Old Xu, having already identified his target during exploration, moved down.
Luckily, it seemed the target resident believed the high-rise was safe and hadn’t installed outdoor security windows like most families.
This conveniently eased Old Xu’s entry into the room, as he had already selected his target precisely.
Furthermore, the target was on the 8th floor, so after a slight shift, he successfully climbed onto the air-conditioning cabinet outside the small room.
When the apocalypse struck, it was midsummer, so the room’s glass window was open.
Old Xu didn’t even need to knock, effortlessly pushing open the screen window and entering directly.
Carefully landing on the ground, Old Xu swiftly crouched down, and took Tiger’s Fang from between his teeth into his hand.
The room was relatively dim, with Old Xu’s eyes flickering with wary cold light.
Under the moonlight’s illumination, Old Xu identified his position as a bedroom.
In the bedroom was a double bed, with a framed photo of a couple on the wall above the headboard, and a large red "double happiness" symbol indicating they were likely newlyweds.
It was unclear whether this pair of newlyweds were still "flying together."
Old Xu couldn’t care about others’ fate at this moment.
To prevent hidden zombies inside, he held the knife low and crept forward.
Old Xu was undoubtedly skillful in infiltration and assassination.
Many foreign adversaries had unknowingly perished at the hands of him and his team.
Each step he took was extremely cautious, barely making a sound.
"Cat!" This is the only term you could think of to describe his stealth technique.
But unlike a cat’s gentleness, Old Xu at that moment lacked any gentleness; instead, he exuded a strong killing intent.
From the bedroom to the living room, through the kitchen, another small bedroom, and finally stopping at the bathroom.
Safe! Old Xu took 8 minutes to thoroughly inspect the two-bedroom living room space.
After completing the initial check, he went over the details once more.
Every nook and cranny, from cupboards to under the bed, Old Xu searched thoroughly.
Only after confirming there were no issues, did he breathe a sigh of relief.
Though his task was not yet complete, while the small room was safe, Old Xu needed to figure out how to get the two people upstairs down.
He wasn’t worried about Lei Tong, the seasoned veteran. It was the rescued boy who couldn’t climb down.
So, how to get the boy down was the issue Old Xu currently needed to solve.
Old Xu seemed to have a plan; after completing the inspection, he headed straight for the bedroom without delay.
Old Xu’s idea was simple: since the boy couldn’t climb down himself, they would assist him.
Pulling off the thin blanket, Old Xu targeted the sheet underneath.
Using Tiger’s Fang, he efficiently tore the sheet into several strips.
Then, twisting them together in pairs, and twisting the strands again. This method ensured the sheet rope was reliable.
After completing the task, Old Xu forcefully pulled each section, checking for signs of breakage.
Finally, he formed it into a loop and hung it on himself.
Carrying nothing else, Old Xu, with the sheet rope draped over him, returned to the window.
After some exertion, he was back on the rooftop.
Lei Tong wasn’t particularly surprised at Old Xu’s return.
He knew very well his captain’s skill; the guy had won the championship at the army competition every year.
So this situation was nothing to worry about for Old Xu.
"How is it, Captain, how are things down there?"
The pressing issue was Lei Tong’s question, since the situation below directly related to their fate.
Old Xu understood Lei Tong’s concern, so he didn’t hesitate, succinctly answering, "No problem."
After speaking, he laid down the sheet rope he carried.
"Captain, this is..." Since Old Xu came up, Lei Tong noticed the item on him.
Knowing it was for climbing, but Lei Tong saw no need for himself to use it.
"We’ll tie the kid with this later, and get him down."
"Oh," Lei Tong nodded in realization, recalling the minor they had with them.
Following Old Xu’s plan, they would tie one end of the rope to the boy, with Lei Tong controlling the other end from above.
Old Xu would then descend first, with them lowering the boy bit by bit to the window in a relay fashion.
In the process, the boy might feel some discomfort from the binding, but as long as the operation was performed correctly, he would have no issues safely entering the residence.
