Return of the Mythic Bloodline
Chapter 626: Meeting Evangeline
Shimmering black scales with inner shades of pale blue shimmered from within the fog. A pair of large blue eyes with vertical slits glowed, countless particles shifting within them.
The eyes slowly moved forward, but they suddenly vanished as Evangeline walked out of the room.
Maximilian’s breath caught in his throat, his eyes never leaving her ethereal form.
Her straight black hair, with inner shades of blue, swayed with every step. A faint smile rested on her naturally pale red lips, while her enchanting eyes narrowed at him in happiness.
Every part of her made Maximilian skip a heartbeat.
"Vivi..." he murmured, moving towards her.
"Congratulations on reaching the Celestial Realm," he said, a hint of awkwardness in his voice as he struggled to meet her eyes.
"Thank you, My Lord," Evangeline said in her beautiful, soft tone that made Maximilian flinch. He had been longing to hear her sweet voice.
"Why are you not looking at me, My Lord?" Evangeline continued, a knowing smile tugging at her lips.
Maximilian’s eyes were lowered to the floor, his cheeks tinged with a faint blush.
"I-I think I have a crush on you, Vivi," he mumbled, rubbing the back of his head.
"I’m your wife, My Lord," she sighed, a low chuckle escaping her lips.
She stepped closer, her arms wrapping around his back, her face resting against his chest. "I’m sorry for being late. Did you miss me?"
"Every day," Maximilian replied, his eyes closing as he felt her warmth after years apart.
After staying like that for a few minutes, the duo entered a room inside the spaceship. The room was neither too grand nor too simple. It was a regular-sized room with a clean bed against the opposite wall.
On the left side of the room stood a metallic table and a pair of chairs, all three fixed to the floor. On the right wall, a dressing mirror with an attached storage frame was placed.
The room was illuminated by a faint glow from numerous small, star-like stones embedded in the ceiling.
Evangeline had ordered AINOS to prepare the room and make it nice and clean. Since every part of the spaceship was made of nanoparticles, AINOS could change the shape and size of any room with a single order. Even the furniture in the room was formed from the nanoparticle matter that had ascended from the floor.
Evangeline took out a mattress from her storage pouch and placed it on the bed with Maximilian’s help. Once they had covered it with a bedsheet, the duo climbed onto the bed.
Maximilian’s every movement was stiff and awkward. Evangeline looked so enchanting that he wanted to keep looking at her, but every glance made him feel so flustered that his eyes instinctively turned away.
Evangeline noticed all of his silly actions and enjoyed every bit of them. But she felt a bit guilty as well.
Maximilian had revealed to her that he had ascended to the Celestial Realm around a decade ago. This was the longest he had stayed away from her. It was natural for him to be awkward in her presence.
She decided to make up for all the time they had lost.
She would have to leave again in a week, after all.
Evangeline crawled towards Maximilian. The latter was sitting with his back against the headboard, his legs stretched straight.
She placed her head in his lap, her eyes looking up at his face. His muscles tightened instantly, his eyes turning to the side.
"My Lord," Evangeline called in a soft tone, holding his hand between both of hers.
"Y-yes."
She placed his hand on her upper chest, just below her neck, and murmured in a soft tone, "I love you, my husband."
Maximilian took a deep breath, almost feeling like he was having a heart attack. She had said those words to him before as well, but now they hit him even harder than the first time, completely undoing him.
"Vivi, y-you can’t just say that casually," he mumbled, obviously flustered.
Evangeline rose from his lap and instead sat there, placing her knees on either side of him, her enchanting face a bit too close to poor Maximilian.
"Why?" she demanded, her eyes narrowed.
"It’s too much for my weak heart," Maximilian replied, his eyes lowering.
"But I merely stated a fact."
She leaned closer and kissed him on the cheek.
Another lethal attack.
"Wouldn’t you at least say it back?" she asked, her cheeks puffing up in a cute sulk.
’Man up, idiot!’ Maximilian shouted at himself inwardly. ’She is your wife, for heaven’s sake. But why is she so cute?’
He took a deep breath to calm himself and replied, "I love you too, my wife."
Now, even Evangeline couldn’t help but feel a little shy, a faint blush rising on her cheeks.
She leaned closer, her arms moving around his neck and their chests pressing together.
"Hubby, I will turn ninety in a week," she murmured, a hint of sadness in her voice. "I don’t want to stay away from you again."
Maximilian knew what she meant. Once a dragon turn ninety, they enter the state of rebirth.
Their outer scales began to break down, turning into a form of egg.
The dragon remained dormant inside the egg for ten years. During this period, their body was completely reconstructed.
They hatched after turning one hundred. It was only then that they could transform into their complete dragon form and truly become adults.
"Don’t worry," Maximilian replied, his arms gently brushing the wings at her back. "I heard that dragons remain unconscious during the cycle of rebirth. It would be like a long sleep. You wouldn’t even notice when the ten years went by."
She whimpered in his arms, her chin rubbing against his shoulder. "But you will be alone again, My Lord."
"Did you forget?" Maximilian asked with a chuckle. "I’m only two years younger than you. I will also enter the cycle of rebirth soon."
No reply came from Evangeline. She pressed her soft lips against his neck, the sudden affection sending a shiver down his spine.
"V-Vivi?" he called, but she only sucked harder, her arms tightening around him.
When she parted a few seconds later, a red love bite was left on his neck.
Her blue eyes looked up at Maximilian’s face as she continued, "Hubby, will there be a problem if I get pregnant before the cycle of rebirth?"
