Chapter 1237: Chapter 1209: Kindred Spirits in Hard Times

The more Qian thought about it, the more she felt this was Yu Minglang’s fault. Who told him to talk so harshly and ignore her feelings? At best you could say he was being jealous for nothing, at worst he didn’t trust her. The more she thought, the angrier she got.

He’d been away so many days, and as soon as he came back he didn’t even ask what was going on and started a fight with her, when she still had the child with her!

She sat there sulking, and Yu Minglang was just as full of displeasure.

He couldn’t go far, worried that Qian would get mad and run out in the middle of the night, so he sat on the flowerbed in the compound staring in the direction of home. He wanted to go buy a pack of cigarettes, but when he patted his pocket it was cleaner than his face.

A dignified vice president couldn’t exactly run to the supermarket and ask if they could put it on his tab, so he could only sit there, looking toward home and stewing.

At this hour every household was watching TV, some people went to bed early and had already turned off their lights. The night wind wasn’t freezing, but it was quite chilly. Yu Minglang thought about how he obviously had a warm little home and a sweet-smelling wife. If they weren’t fighting right now, the two of them could be getting close, talking about the time they’d just spent apart.

But the moment he thought of her infuriating attitude, Yu Minglang felt his liver fire flare up again. She really lived up to being a psychologist—she specialized in picking words that stab right into your heart!

Just at that moment, he saw a figure walking out from the direction of his place. Yu Minglang looked more closely—Qiao Zhen had come out in pajamas and slippers.

Qiao Zhen also saw Yu Minglang. He wanted to turn his head and leave but felt that would be too deliberate, so he had to bite the bullet and walk over. Seeing the state Yu Minglang was in, he instantly knew what was going on.

"Your wife kicked you out?" Qiao Zhen asked.

Yu Minglang straightened his back ramrod straight, face full of righteousness. "Do I look like that kind of pathetic man to you? My wife loves me to death, she can’t sleep without me. You think she’d kick me out? I just felt the air at home was a little stuffy, so I came out to get some fresh air. What are you doing out here?"

Qiao Zhen gave a dry cough. "Getting some fresh air too."

Yu Minglang’s sharp eyes caught sight of the scratch on his face and suddenly he felt more confident.

"Got clawed?"

That’s people for you—they’re scared of comparisons.

At first Yu Minglang had still been sulking at Qian, feeling this little girl was really out of line, finding new ways to piss him off. But now that he saw someone even more miserable than him, his mood balanced out. At least Qian didn’t claw him.

"How is that possible? My Shi Tou calls me ’Sweetheart’ every other word, she’s basically the modern-day model of a virtuous wife. How could she claw me? I’m really not bragging—my status at home, when I say one she doesn’t dare say two. If I say eat an apple, she doesn’t dare peel a tangerine. That’s how much authority I have!" What he was actually thinking of was the way she’d just kicked him out. He’d thought about not leaving, but was afraid staying home would make her even madder. Sigh...

"How come I feel like your face looks exactly like you got clawed?" Yu Minglang knew perfectly well what kind of person he was and had to expose him.

Qiao Zhen’s stiff mouth refused to admit it. "I just had a pimple on my face, it felt prickly so I asked her to scratch it, and she scratched a little too hard. She’s crying in guilt right now. We men stand tall under heaven, how can we be like women? Especially when she’s a big pregnant woman about to give birth."

Right now, that big pregnant woman about to give birth was sitting on Qian’s sofa, clutching tissues and sobbing.

"Qian, he bullied me. I’m so mad I could die. You have to give me some ideas, we can’t let that stinky man get too smug!"

"Oh, Xiaoyu, you shouldn’t be dragging Qian into this. Look at the time. You’re clearly the one in the wrong... Aren’t you going to get Zhen back?" Shi Touyu’s mother had come up too.

Because her daughter was about to give birth, she’d come over to take care of her. She’d just watched her daughter and son-in-law start a fight, and the old lady had been furious too. These two unsteady kids actually managed to quarrel over something like that. Shi Touyu kept crying and the old lady had no choice but to ask Qian upstairs for help. She had no idea Qian was mad herself.

"Auntie, I’ll talk to Shi Tou. You go back down first, or call Qiao Zhen."

"Okay! Sorry to trouble you, Qian!" Mrs Shi was worried about her son-in-law. It was clearly her daughter’s fault, but since her daughter was pregnant she didn’t dare scold her too harshly, so she could only leave her with Qian. Mrs Shi got up to go back and call Qiao Zhen.

"Mom! Don’t you call him! That’ll just puff him up even more. He even dares pull that stunt where he turns his head and walks off on me. I’m at war with him!" Shi Touyu was still shouting at her mother’s back.

"What exactly happened?" Qian had been upset herself, and Shi Yu’s arrival forced her to pull herself together and settle her friend’s problem first.

The moment she started talking about her grievances, Shi Yu’s eyes turned red.

"Qian, he’s gone too far! I’m only allowed to play Fight the Landlord for half an hour a week. He won’t let me touch the computer, and I’ve been obedient and not touching it. I finally got to play today, and I finally got a great hand of cards. Do you know how wicked he is? I’d just bombed with four twos, and only had one straight left—from 9 to A, I could have gone out right then. Do you know what that idiot did? He..."

Thinking of the painful part, Shi Yu’s tears fell, and she said, heartbroken, "He actually played 10 to A and left the 9! The guy across from me dropped four threes and bombed me. My poor 9 was stuck at home. Thousands and thousands of joy beans were gone in an instant..."

Qian’s lips twitched over and over. She rubbed her temples and asked,

"So you two started fighting over this kind of idiotic reason?!"

"Not exactly! At first I was just really mad, so I reasoned with him. That guy’s stiff as a dead duck, insisting he was trying to ’enhance my joy in winning’, saying that if I went out in one shot I wouldn’t get to enjoy how miserable the other two were. He even smugly bragged that he’d calculated that there were no four-of-a-kind bombs outside. And what happened? I didn’t experience the joy of winning at all. All I heard was those two opponents keep yelling, ’You played your cards so well...’"

Shi Yu stomped her foot in anger. "I could hear their wild laughter through the screen!"

Qian laughed too; it did sound pretty dumb.

Some things just sound funny to outsiders, but for the person involved, at that moment they’re absolutely furious. Shi Yu was exactly in that state now.

"I thought about what you told me, that couples should communicate more and not bottle things up, so I argued with him. But that guy just refused to admit he was wrong. Then I started thinking of all the times he’d been stubborn and bullied me before. I’d said eating sea cucumber made me sick, and he still made me eat it. I hate going for walks and he insists on dragging me out. I get mad watching TV dramas and he has to say they’re all fake..."

Fights between husband and wife are like this. They might start over some tiny thing, just a difference of opinion, and the more they talk, the more the thinking branches out. Especially for wives—it’s easy for them to drag out all the grievances they’ve suffered before, one by one. But most men think once something’s over, that’s the end of it. They have no idea women are storing it all up inside, remembering each thing clearly, just waiting to turn the intestines inside out in the next argument.

Listening to Shi Yu complain, Qian found she couldn’t laugh anymore.

Hadn’t she just gone through the exact same mental process as Shi Yu?

She’d started a fight with Yu Minglang over a small thing, kicked him out, and then sat at home replaying the past. The more she thought, the madder she got. With that in mind, what right did she have to laugh at how childish Shi Yu and her husband were?

"Qiao Zhen’s temper isn’t the type to nitpick with you, right? What did you two argue about that made you kick him out?"
