Chapter 1190: Chapter 1162: Why Don’t I Look Like Mom? (1000+ Monthly Ticket Bonus)
After Dalong finished talking with Yu Minglang and came out to look for Qian, he saw her sitting by the bay window. On her beloved little wooden table lay something, and the moment Dalong saw it his eyes went blank.
"Sis?"
"Come here."
On the table was exactly the thing that had sparked the conflict between the siblings: the little wrought-iron toy gun Dalong’s respected squad leader had given him.
"Didn’t you throw this away?" It was because of this that Dalong had fallen out with his big sister; that day Qian had thrown it down from the building right in front of him.
He’d been furious, searched for ages and never found it.
"I lied to you. What I threw that day was the box. Once you’re done with your training I’ll give this back to you. It carries your squad leader’s goodwill toward you, you should keep it properly."
"Sis..." Dalong actually really wanted to ask whether he’d been letting his sister down all this time.
Including this time—he’d given up the chance to enter headquarters and chosen to protect her instead. Would Sis think he was pretty useless?
"What?" Qian’s voice was the same as always, forever impatient with her little brother, but if you listened closely there seemed to be something new in it, something you couldn’t quite put into words.
"My leg’s still not healed. I don’t want to go back to the company. My brother-in-law thinks it’s boring for me to just sit at home and told me to hang out with you for a few days. Is that okay?"
He was clearly here to stick close and protect Qian, yet he made it sound like he was just idle and bored. Qian felt Dalong really had grown up.
"Sure."
"Great, then I’m going to let my sis show me what the life of the rich is like. Once I’ve had my fill, I’m going back to dig dirt, and if I come back again it’ll probably be a year from now. Sis, don’t blame me."
"I won’t."
Only Qian herself understood the weight in those three words. It meant she was setting everything from their previous life down.
Only after letting go of all that resentment did she realize she could feel this light. Looking at her little brother’s vibrant face, Qian smiled with genuine joy for the first time, and Yu Minglang, standing at the door watching her, smiled along with her.
When his wife was happy, he was happy.
"Show Dalong a good time while he’s here. He might not get days this relaxed again in the future." What Yu Minglang said was full of implication. Dalong thought he meant that he’d be going back to digging dirt later; it was only afterward that he realized his brother-in-law and sister had teamed up to screw him over again.
But this particular "screw-over" was one Dalong accepted willingly, and he was ready to devote his youth to it with no regrets.
Qian really did keep her word too. She said she’d show Dalong around and she did. Since she was pregnant and couldn’t go to bars or clubs, she took Dalong to play golf and go bowling, and even brought him along to a few card games. The social circle in Lishi was only so big; Qian had always been low-key and rarely went out to play before. Now she was appearing high-profile every day with Dalong in tow, and people began to remember this pair of siblings.
Yu Minglang told Dalong that when he went out with Qian, all he had to bring was his mouth to eat with; if anyone asked him anything, he was just to grin foolishly. Dalong did exactly as his brother-in-law requested. Qian had been introduced by Hai Zhao and Zheng Xu, and she was extremely generous with money, quickly leaving a deep impression. Everyone knew there was a mysterious, free-spending woman who often appeared in various high-end clubs with her slightly "mentally retarded" younger brother.
So when Qian brought Dalong to the Mu Family to treat Mr. Mu, Mu Xiaofeng didn’t seem all that surprised. She merely instructed the house servants to take good care of Dalong, and serve him plenty of good food and drink while Qian was treating the old man.
This gave Yu Minglang even more reason to believe his judgment was correct—that Mu Xiaofeng must have arranged someone to keep an eye on his wife. Otherwise, given how much she valued her privacy, she would never have agreed so readily to let Qian bring Dalong over.
Meanwhile, Yu Minglang’s investigation into Mu Xiaofeng was proceeding steadily. Just as Mu Xiaofeng had been unable to find detailed information on Qian, at the beginning all Yu Minglang could dig up was the surface-level material on Mu Xiaofeng—just as Qian had said, she was a businesswoman who’d started out in the tourism industry, with travel agencies and several large hotels under her name.
Mu Xiaofeng had come to Lishi a few years back. This was all Yu Minglang could uncover in a short time, but he trusted his woman and his own instincts, and could only persevere and keep digging.
Normally Dalong might seem a bit slow, but at crucial moments he was quite sharp. At the Mu Family he really did act like someone with mild cognitive disability. Qian had instructed him to just reenact his behavior from middle school when he’d been addicted to online games, so he simply played online games all morning right there under the servant’s nose. At first the servant stood by watching; after seeing him lose round after round and each loss being so comically idiotic, the servant curled his lip in contempt and left, finally reassured.
In his head Dalong stuck up a middle finger. Contempt your ass! Back then he’d been a top player on the entire server—if his big sis hadn’t given him that "collapse therapy," how would he have ended up nauseous whenever he saw a game?
The servant brought him fruit and told him to eat. Dalong was in the middle of ten straight losses. Remembering how Sis had told him to act exactly like his teenage self, his eyes rolled and he decided to improvise. He grabbed the fruit tray and smashed it on the floor.
"So annoying! I already said I didn’t want any, don’t mess me up!"
That was exactly how he’d been in his teens—totally unreasonable, always yelling at his mother.
Qian came out after treating Mr. Mu and happened to see this scene, and couldn’t help giving her little brother a thumbs-up in her heart. Nice improv!
Just then Mu Xiaofeng happened to be returning from outside and also stopped at the sight. Dalong jabbed his finger at the servant and cursed, "Look at that face that just makes people want to hate you. Are you the jinx making me lose my games?"
"Dalong, stop making trouble!" Qian hurried over, grabbed Dalong’s hand, apologizing to the servant while also looking apologetically at Mu Xiaofeng.
"Sorry, Mrs. Mu, my little brother’s causing you trouble. I really don’t know what to do with him. I don’t feel safe leaving him home alone like this, and he’s already chased away our babysitter. My mom won’t be able to come over until next month. This fruit tray he broke must be pretty expensive, right? I’ll compensate you."
"It’s fine. Mr Chen already said it’s tough on you having to take care of your little brother. Oh, by the way, why doesn’t your brother look very much like you?" Mu Xiaofeng studied Dalong closely. Although the young man was quite tall, his violent temper did indeed make him seem short a few screws.
"He looks more like our father, I look more like my mom. Oh, here, let me show you our family photo." Qian took out her wallet and pulled out the photo inside.
This had been specially prepared. It was a photo from a few years ago, when Qian had just started university, taken by her mom with Qian and Dalong. You could tell it was an older photo at a glance. Dalong was still a kid back then, but you could already see the outline of his current features.
They were clearly real siblings. Only then did Mu Xiaofeng’s suspicious heart relax a little. Thinking of the information she’d gathered earlier about Qian bringing Dalong to various venues, she felt a bit more at ease, though she still spoke cautiously.
"Mr Chen, your brother actually does resemble your mother in some ways. It’s you who doesn’t look much like her."
"You’re saying I don’t look like my mom?!"
