Chapter 727: Chapter-727

The pain was instantaneous, blinding, and absolute. It felt as if a rusted iron blade was being violently twisted directly into her chest. A strangled, breathless gasp ripped from her throat as she dangled there for a split second, her entire body weight pulling agonizingly against her fractured, bound core. Black spots danced wildly across her vision.

The heavy crunch of boots grew louder, rounding the corner into the dead end. Rough, predatory voices murmured in the dark—local thugs complaining about the cold and looking for an easy mark.

Running on nothing but pure, unadulterated survival instinct, Heena bit the inside of her cheek until she tasted copper. She hooked her elbows over the top of the rough stone, kicked her leg up, and violently hauled her battered body over the edge.

She rolled silently over the clay tiles just as the dim, flickering beam of a cheap oil lantern swept across the dead end below.

"Could have sworn I heard something down here," a gruff, heavily accented woman’s voice echoed from the alley, the light illuminating the exact spot where Heena had just been standing.

"It’s just alley rats, you paranoid drunk," another woman muttered impatiently. "Come on, let’s head back to the tavern district. There’s nobody out here in the slums tonight."

Heena didn’t stick around to listen to them leave. She let gravity do the work, sliding blindly down the other side of the wall.

She hit the ground below with a muffled, heavy thud, instantly forcing her body to roll into the deep shadows to absorb the brutal impact. She curled into a tight ball in the dirt, clutching her bound chest as she gasped silently for air. Every single inhale was a battle. She lay completely still for a long, agonizing minute, listening intently as the heavy footsteps on the other side of the wall finally faded away into the distance.

"Host..." the System whimpered, floating down beside her, its glowing blue interface dimmed to a barely visible speck to avoid detection. "Are you alive?"

"Barely," Heena wheezed, her forehead resting against the cool, damp earth.

She pressed her palms against the ground and slowly, painfully pushed herself up onto her knees. The scent of rotting alley garbage was gone, replaced by the faint, elegant aroma of night-blooming jasmine and damp soil.

When the white-hot pain finally began to recede to a manageable throb, Heena slowly opened her eyes to see exactly what kind of territory she had just thrown herself into.

Before her eyes could even fully adjust to the dim, moonlit garden, the distinct crunch of footsteps echoed from the stone path directly in front of her.

Not from the alley outside. From inside the compound.

And it wasn’t just one person. She could clearly distinguish the heavy, authoritative tread of a woman and the lighter, hurried steps of a man.

Heena frantically scanned the moonlit space, her dark eyes darting around the perimeter to find a shadowed alcove, a decorative boulder, or a thick shrub. But the courtyard was meticulously manicured and sparse. There was literally nowhere to hide.

Two silhouettes rapidly emerged from the darkness of the inner corridor. The faint, silver moonlight caught the solid, heavy wooden sticks clutched tightly in both of their hands. They had obviously heard the heavy thud of an intruder dropping over their private wall and had come out fully prepared to bludgeon a thief to death.

Given her wrecked physical state, taking a beating from a solid wooden club was one hundred percent guaranteed to be fatal. Heena didn’t try to summon her terrifying aura. She didn’t try to stand her ground. She simply gritted her teeth, instinctively curling tighter into a ball on the dirt and throwing her arms up to cover her head and face. If they were going to strike, she had to protect her skull at all costs.

But the crushing blow never fell.

Instead, a soft, incredibly startled voice pierced the tense silence of the garden.

"Why are you here?"

Heena froze. She slowly lowered her arms just a fraction, cracking one dark eye open to peer through the gloom.

Standing just a few feet away, gripping a defensive wooden staff in his calloused hands, was the physician. Ren.

The sheer, absurd irony of it almost made her laugh. She had blindly scaled a random, pitch-black alley wall to escape a gang of thugs, only to hurl herself directly into the back garden of the exact same clinic she had dramatically walked out of ten minutes ago.

Ren stared down at her in absolute, paralyzed shock. He took a hesitant step forward, his nose twitching slightly. The fresh, dark patches seeping through her coarse linen tunic weren’t entirely visible in the shadows, but as a trained healer, he didn’t need a lantern to know what had just happened. He could instantly smell the sharp, metallic tang of fresh blood. Her violent climb over the wall had completely reopened her wounds.

"Are you okay, miss?" Ren asked, his voice dropping its defensive edge, replaced instantly by frantic, professional concern. He tossed his wooden stick onto the grass. "Heena, right? Please, stand up."

He stepped forward, reaching out a hand to help pull her out of the dirt.

But before his fingers could even brush her sleeve, the older woman standing beside him violently yanked him backward by the collar of his robes.

She stepped squarely in front of Ren, raising her heavy wooden stick with a fierce, terrifyingly protective glare. In a society where men were vulnerable targets, this sturdy, hardened commoner woman was clearly not going to let a strange, bleeding shadow in the night anywhere near her son.

"Who the heck is she?!" the older woman demanded, her voice booming with hostile suspicion as she leveled the tip of the heavy stick directly at Heena’s face.

Ren stumbled, quickly grabbing his mother’s arm and desperately trying to push the weapon down.

"Mother, wait!" Ren pleaded, his voice urgent but entirely respectful. "She is the patient I was telling you about earlier!"

The older woman froze, her heavy wooden stick still suspended in the air. She narrowed her sharp, weathered eyes, looking from the bloody, dirt-covered woman on the ground to her frantic son, and then back again.

"This is her?" his mother demanded, her voice dripping with profound skepticism. "The one you dragged in from the rain? The noble castaway who dumped a piece of scrap wood on your table and marched out the front door not even an hour ago?"

"Pfft—!" the System abruptly clamped both of its digital paws over its mouth, its shoulders shaking violently as it floated next to Heena’s head. "Host! She knows about the scrap wood! Oh my god, your grand, dramatic exit was literally a circle! You climbed a wall and landed right back at square one!"

Heena mentally commanded the golden lion cub to drop dead.

Gritting her teeth against the agonizing burn in her chest, Heena placed a trembling hand on the grass and slowly forced herself to stand. She didn’t accept Ren’s offered hand, knowing full well his mother was watching like a hawk ready to strike. She swayed slightly as she found her footing, leaning heavily against the brick wall she had just plummeted from.
