Chapter 1210: Chapter 1237: Exposing the True Colors 22

Shi Nuan thought for a moment, then suddenly entered a string of numbers. After waiting a few seconds, she heard a click—the box actually opened. What she’d entered was the date she first came to the Shi Family and met Lu Xingshen.

She hadn’t expected Lu Xingshen to use that day as the password.

Shi Nuan couldn’t describe what she was feeling; a heavy weight slammed into her chest, making it hard to breathe.

Her hand rested on the password box, hesitating. She wasn’t sure if there were things about her own background inside, and if it all turned out to be a misunderstanding, then what she was doing now was secretly prying into someone else’s privacy—and that was a very bad thing to do.

After struggling for a long time, Shi Nuan felt she’d regret it if she didn’t look. She clenched her teeth and opened it.

What met her eyes was a thick stack of A4 paper, with her name written on the pages.

Shi Nuan’s heart sank heavily. So it was about her, just like Nianyang had said.

She licked her lips, about to take the papers out and open them, when the password box was suddenly snatched away from behind. Lu Xingshen’s slightly rushed voice followed, "Nuan, didn’t I tell you not to go through my things?"

Shi Nuan stood up, her gaze tight and pressing. "Second Uncle, didn’t you say these were files from your division? Why is my name on them?"

Lu Xingshen’s eyes flickered slightly. He turned his face away, avoiding the girl’s piercing stare, and spoke with a cool, steady tone. "It’s just your health checkup report, that’s all."

"If it’s just a health checkup, then why all the secrecy? Why won’t you let me see it?"

Shi Nuan pressed him sharply. "Second Uncle, that’s not a health checkup at all, it’s about my background, isn’t it? You already found out about my origins long ago, but you hid it from me. Second Uncle, you’ve gone too far."

"Did you see everything?" For the first time, Lu Xingshen could hear his own heartbeat speeding up, pounding so hard it nearly shredded his nerves. He was extremely on edge.

Shi Nuan didn’t answer. Instead she said, "Are you that scared I’ll see it?"

Lu Xingshen felt the tightness in his chest ease a little. He thought, if Nuan had really seen it, she wouldn’t be this calm.

He blinked and a plan formed. Simply meeting Shi Nuan’s accusing gaze head-on, he said openly, "Nuan, there is something I haven’t told you. It’s true, I’ve known about your background for a long time. I know who your parents are. But I chose to keep it from you."

Shi Nuan hadn’t expected Lu Xingshen to admit it outright. She froze, and at the same time was furious. "Second Uncle, you knew and still didn’t tell me? You clearly know how much I want to have my own family, my own parents and relatives. You even promised to help me look for them—so why hide it from me? What’s the point of doing this?"

Lu Xingshen’s gaze was dark and deep. "Nuan, I wasn’t hiding it on purpose. I did it for your sake. I was protecting you."

"What do you mean?"

"Because your parents are not good parents."

Calmly, without his face flushing or his heart racing, Lu Xingshen said, "They threw you away because you were a girl. After that they had a son. I didn’t want you to find them only to learn you were unwanted. I was afraid you’d be hurt. Your parents aren’t worthy of you recognizing them."

Shi Nuan’s shoulders drooped, and the faint light that had flared up in her eyes vanished in an instant.

"Is that really it? Was I truly abandoned by my parents? They really didn’t want me..."

She had dreamed countless times, imagined countless times, that her parents had accidentally lost her. She’d never thought the truth would be this cruel.

So from the moment she was born, she had been abandoned.
