Reincarnated As The Heroes Guide
Chapter 307: Transfer Orders
Sanchez stared at the transfer orders with a hint of astonishment. He had wondered if Kalli had taken his warnings seriously, but it was now clear that not only had she been paying attention, she had also set them up for the most effective surveillance possible.
His team might be a bit squeamish when it came to some things. But the rest of his former special forces team was with Esmeralda, who was stationed beside them with her undead.
And when it came down to it, they were likely to help.
As long as it wasn’t too obvious, and they didn’t target everyone around the leaders, it could all be passed off as an accident.
However, Sanchez suspected that it was not going to be needed at all. The ones who were causing trouble had hidden away underground or in ruins, and had lorded it over their small groups of survivors.
The ones who had worked alongside larger groups and actively tried to make life better for everyone were not giving them any headaches.
The goal was not to eliminate them outright, but to crush their egos, and their reputations. The System was rewarding them for keeping people alive, after all. So, when the incompetent front line forces began to falter, his group could charge forward and rescue them in a most dramatic fashion, then strip them of command and rally their troops.
That was when Sanchez suspected that he would have to shoot someone.
They had already lost so much of their power that they were desperate to rebuild some of that respect and authority. If they failed on both counts, they were likely to snap and do something stupid.
Late that evening, the news came from the embedded scouts.
The Frost Giants had sent another batch of warriors, and the whole group was on the move.
And that gave Kalli ideas.
"Hey, you guys identified the area when you were pulled to the Frost Giant City, right? By the mountains and the geography? Could you find it again, and how long would it take to get there?" She asked Alexei.
"Yeah, we know where it is. Some of the others had been there on vacation before, and the mountains hadn’t changed, though everything else about them had. What are you thinking?"
"I’m thinking that we send a team of speeders over with some heavy guns and lay waste to their city while their warriors are here to pillage ours. We’ve got the firepower, we might as well use it.
I’m sure that the System should have something good to say about our odds of survival if we eliminate a major threat."
The Rogue stared at her in shock.
Everyone else was trying to plan out how to complete the battle with minimal casualties, and Kalli was thinking of sending strike teams to the Frost Giants? They were thousands of kilometres away, it would take a whole day to get there.
And by then, the Giants would be assaulting the city.
"I think that it would be wise to wait for the battle to be over, then counterattack. At least then, we will know that they’re not going to have some special way to get their forces back to rescue the civilians.
Their Ice Magic is deadly, and they can use it on a huge scale to create storms that will tear into our speeders."
Kalli nodded. "That’s a good point. Kick them when they’re down. Alright, I will hold off on plans for the counterattack until after the battle. But if you happen to come up with a good idea, let me know. I want to make sure that the Frost Giants don’t start with a whole new round of nonsense after they lose this fight.
If they start freezing our gardens, I’m going to be a very unhappy Coordinator."
Alexei gave her a sloppy salute and turned toward the door. That was almost guaranteed to happen during the battle. The Frost Giants needed the cold and snow for their magic to be at peak effectiveness, and that meant they were going to try to turn the area around Marimgar into a snow field.
If they didn’t then it would be for the benefit of the allies the they had brought with them, but Alexei suspected that the other Giants were not particularly bothered by the cold either.
At least, they shouldn’t be if they had agreed to work together.
The Giant army was covering a huge amount of ground, jogging along at over thirty kilometres an hour.
And that was going to make things interesting.
At the rate that they were going, the Giants were going to arrive in Marimgar just after midnight, with clear skies and a full moon. Most of the city had assumed that they would attack in daylight, so not all of the warriors were rested, and they only had four hours to get into position.
So, at best, they were going to get a two hour nap, then eat, move and prepare for the assault.
Marimgar was well equipped for a night attack, they even had drones to carry long burning daylight flares now, thanks to the Techno Wizards. And that would allow the ones who couldn’t see well in the dark to fight properly without needing to rely on the notoriously flaky night vision goggles.
Those had been mostly discarded now, but some still carried them in case the torches went out in a dungeon, or they needed to see something beyond the range of the lights on night duty.
Normally, the city had spotlights panning the last five hundred metres outside the walls. But today, they were off, and the outposts were lit to pull the attackers toward the defensive forces. It would be better than having them fail to notice the most heavily fortified positions in the area.
But there were advantages.
At night, there were no farmers in the fields, and the only ones who were awake at the outposts were on guard duty. They would wake the others in two hours, giving them the last two hours to get ready to defend the tower.
That would also be just before the reinforcements began to arrive.
All in all, Kalli was satisfied with how things were turning out.
Nobody had done anything stupid yet, and nobody had done anything that was going to mess up the plan, by thinking only of themselves and not the people around them. That was an improvement on what she had expected, but then the battle hadn’t started yet.
There was still plenty of time for every well laid plan to fail spectacularly.
