Chapter 700: You're Also Not Very Bright
Chapter 700: Chapter 696: You’re Also Not Very Bright
Cecilia Sterling scoffed. Her laugh was one of blatant mockery, and she looked at Kylie Churchill as if she were an idiot.
Then, Cecilia turned slightly, shot her a disdainful glance from the corner of her eye, and proceeded to leave.
Kylie Churchill completely forgot about posturing in front of Cecilia Sterling and frantically looked for a mirror. “A mirror! Do you guys have a mirror?”
“I do, I do! Here you go, Kylie.”
Kylie Churchill hurriedly opened the small mirror and bared her teeth to check them, only to find they were perfectly straight and white. There was no lipstick on them at all!
‘She tricked me?’
“You, stop right there!”
Fuming, Kylie Churchill rushed forward and once again blocked Cecilia Sterling’s path, demanding furiously, “You… you dare to trick me?”
Cecilia Sterling raised an eyebrow and said dismissively, “What? Are you going to sue me?”
“You…”
Kylie Churchill was no match for Cecilia Sterling in a war of words. She could get a few jabs in when Cecilia ignored her, but the moment Cecilia retorted, Kylie was utterly defenseless.
She never knew what would come out of Cecilia’s mouth; the woman was completely unpredictable.
Finally, Kylie Churchill said through gritted teeth, “I’m telling you, Shawn Lane doesn’t hold things against you because he’s a magnanimous gentleman. But if you dare disrespect him like that again, I will…”
“You’ll what?” Cecilia Sterling smiled at her, her presence slightly oppressive. “Hm?”
“I’ll… I will make you pay!” Kylie Churchill had to summon all her strength to get those five words out.
Cecilia Sterling was so amused she laughed. “You know, you and Shawn Lane are quite the pair. One thinks he’s smart, and the other is so purely stupid.”
“Besides, my good looks are a matter of public record. Anyone with eyes can tell I’m beautiful, so I certainly don’t need you to ‘make’ me anything.”
Kylie Churchill’s pretty face flushed with anger as she snapped, “What’s so great about being beautiful? You just use that face of yours to get what you want, don’t you?”
“I’m not like you. Shawn Lane said I’m more than just pretty.”
Cecilia Sterling nodded lightly and said with a deadpan expression, “You’re more than just pretty. You’re also not very bright!”
With that, Cecilia Sterling gave a very obvious eye-roll and once again walked past her to leave.
Kylie Churchill stood frozen, her face flushed red with anger. Finally, unable to take it anymore, she stomped her foot in a rage. “I’m so pissed!”
“Kylie, don’t be angry. People like her are just crude by nature. There’s no way we refined people can win an argument against someone like that.”
“Exactly. Besides a pretty face, what does she have that can compare to you?”
Kylie Churchill took a few deep breaths, then turned to glare fiercely at Cecilia Sterling’s retreating figure. ‘If it weren’t Yvette’s birthday today, I would never have let this go so easily.’
“If only my dad had acquired this place sooner. Then I could have just thrown her out today.”
The two girls beside her immediately chimed in. “Exactly! But don’t you worry, Kylie. There will be plenty of chances in the future. You’ll probably run into her here again. When you do, you can have security kick her out in front of everyone and completely humiliate her!”
The suggestion brought a smirk to Kylie Churchill’s lips. “That’s right. A great idea! She’d better pray I don’t get the chance, or I’ll make her pay.”
“Cecilia Sterling!”
Cecilia Sterling had eaten and drunk her fill and was just looking for a quiet corner to relax when she turned her head and saw Shawn Lane.
An extremely impatient expression crossed her face. ‘First the opening act, and now the headliner.’
Before Shawn Lane could speak, Cecilia Sterling cut him off, spitting out a single, cold word: “Scram.”
Shawn Lane froze.
“If you don’t scram, I’ll go right over to that girlfriend of yours—the one who’s as dumb as a pig—and tell her everything about our past. She doesn’t know yet, does she?”
“Cecilia Sterling, you…”
Shawn Lane wanted to say more, but Cecilia Sterling’s glare stopped him cold.
He swallowed his words and nodded lightly. “Alright. I’ll get going, then.”
Cecilia Sterling ignored him, sinking into a corner of the sofa. She watched the handsome men and beautiful women in the banquet hall from afar. ‘You have to admit,’ she thought, ‘from a bystander’s point of view, they’re all quite easy on the eyes.’
The guys were, for the most part, quite handsome.
The women were all gorgeous as well, dressed to the nines as if it were a fashion show.
“Honey!”
Estelle Goodman finally found Cecilia Sterling in a corner after searching all over. She rushed to her side, concerned. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
Cecilia Sterling waved a hand dismissively. “I’m fine. Just in a bit of a food coma. Plus, I just saw a couple of nauseating things, and I think it’s messing with my digestion.”
Estelle Goodman, proving herself a true best friend, immediately widened her eyes. “Did Shawn Lane and his new girlfriend come over here to cause trouble?”
Cecilia Sterling nodded.
“The nerve of some people is just unbelievable! He actually dared?” Estelle Goodman said, her cheeks puffed with anger. “Someone like him should be hacked to death in one of those ‘slash-the-price’ online scams!”
Cecilia Sterling couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m afraid that wouldn’t work. You’re always one slash short.”
Estelle burst out laughing. “How is your mind so quick? I seriously want to crack open your skull and see how your brain is wired.”
When Kylie Churchill returned to Shawn Lane’s side, her eyes immediately welled up.
“What’s wrong, Kylie?”
Seeing her expression, Shawn Lane asked with concern, “Why are you suddenly so upset?”
Before Kylie Churchill could explain, her two friends eagerly recounted the incident to Shawn Lane, adding their own dramatic embellishments.
The gist of it was that Kylie Churchill had been bullied, and that Cecilia Sterling was a vicious, hateful person.
Kylie had expected Shawn Lane to stand up for her after hearing their story, but he just furrowed his brow and remained silent for a long moment.
“Shawn?” Kylie Churchill couldn’t stop herself from calling his name.
Shawn Lane snapped back to reality, feeling a growing irritation. Based on what he knew of Cecilia Sterling, she would never have said those things to Kylie Churchill without provocation.
But he couldn’t call Kylie Churchill’s bluff.
“It’s okay, it’s okay.” He patiently hugged Kylie Churchill, patting her back soothingly. “You can’t reason with people like her. Just stay away from her from now on. Even I keep my distance from her now, alright?”
“But I can’t just let it go! She said I wasn’t bright!”
‘Well, she wasn’t wrong about that,’ Shawn Lane thought to himself.
“You’re not going to let her words get to you, are you?” Shawn Lane released her, then dotingly cupped her face. “My Kylie is the smartest. Don’t listen to her nonsense. She’s only attacking you because she’s jealous.”
Kylie Churchill snorted indignantly. “Well, she’d better not give me another opportunity! Shawn, if she ever pesters you again, you have to completely ignore her!”
“Of course. I’m a man with a girlfriend now. I’ll maintain a safe distance from all members of the opposite sex, don’t worry.”
Hearing this, Kylie Churchill finally broke into a satisfied smile.
Just then, with all the guests having arrived, Yvette made her entrance in a magnificent, glamorous gown. Instantly, everyone flocked around her, showering her with compliments and well wishes.
Seeing this, Estelle pulled Cecilia Sterling to her feet. “It’s starting! Let’s go over, too!”
