Chapter 965: The Day of the Graduation Exam

Konoha Ninja Academy, Konohagakure

Today is that time of the year—a day that only comes twice annually. Today marks the day of the Graduation Exam, a day when a new batch of trainees will partake in the graduation exam in order to become Konoha Genin to officially embark on their journey as Konoha Shinobi.

As it is the day of the graduation exam, even in the early morning, the academy grounds are lively. Various trainees have gathered in groups of twos and threes, and a spectrum of emotions, from excitement and anxiety to nervousness and distress, is visible on their faces.

On one side of the main ground, a small stage had been prepared. Seated on it were the senior officials of Konoha, along with the academy teachers responsible for managing the entire graduation exam.

On the third side, a temporary viewing platform had been arranged for the audience and family members of the graduating trainees. They would come to the academy to watch their child’s performance in the exam.

However, unlike another graduation exam, this time is quite special and that’s why grand preparations have been made.

The reason for such grand preparations is that the graduating trainees today hold special backgrounds. Among the candidates, there is not only the son of Yondaime Hokage and the current Jinchuriki of Nine-tails, Uzumaki Naruto but also another Jinchuriki, Fu, who previously resided in Takigakure but was transferred to Konoha due to security concerns in Takigakure.

In addition to these two, there are also two children from the Uchiha Clan, Uchiha Sasuke & Uchiha Kiyomi, two from the Hyuga Clan, Hyuga Neji & Hyuga Hinata, and several other children from various noble shinobi clans such as the Ino-Shika-Cho, Kurama, Aburame, Inuzuka, and more.

Let’s not forget the special trainee, Shion, who is the princess of the fallen kingdom of Demons.

It can be stated that in this iteration of the Graduation Ceremony, the batch of graduating students is the most special in the history of the Konoha Ninja Academy. Consequently, not only have all the senior officials of the village, including the Hokage and the three Elders of the Elder Council, attended, but also the parents of the graduating students have come to witness the upcoming graduation exam, and of course, the other villagers are also excited to attend the exam.

What no one expected was that even Uchiha Fugaku, the former Patriarch of the Uchiha Clan, and his wife, Uchiha Mikoto—both of whom hadn’t been seen in public for the past seven months—had also graced the Ninja Academy with their presence to attend the graduation ceremony.

Sitting among the elders, Tsunade-hime observed Uchiha Fugaku from the corner of her eyes and couldn’t help but mutter with a frown of surprise, “What is he doing here?”

Typically, if someone loses their eyes, they will attempt to implant another pair to resume their daily life. Considering Fugaku is a Uchiha, acquiring a pair of Sharingan would be easier for him, given the availability of multiple pairs that he could use for the implantation process. However, Fugaku chose not to do so, opting to live as a blind man for the past seven months. The reason behind Fugaku’s decision to live without vision remained a mystery that nobody could comprehend.

And now, this blind man and his wife—both of whom haven’t been seen in public for the past seven months—suddenly appeared at the Ninja Academy to attend the graduation exam. There’s definitely something odd.

Elder Hiruzen also gazed at Uchiha Fugaku and his wife from the corner of his eyes, wearing a thoughtful expression. ‘Is it for Uchiha Sasuke and Uchiha Kiyomi?’ This could be the only reason, Hiruzen thought, however, he wasn’t certain.

Considering Fugaku’s arrogant character and the shame of having lost his Mangekyō Sharingan, he must not want others to see him. So, it stands to reason that he should not attend public events like today, yet here he is much to everyone’s surprise.

Sasuke and Kiyomi quickly noticed that the atmosphere on the ground had suddenly changed. Almost everyone, children and adults alike, was whispering to each other and pointing toward the audience’s seat. In particular, they were pointing at his father, Fugaku.

Seeing this, Sasuke and Kiyomi both felt really annoyed and deeply moved at the same time.

Both understood that their parents must have anticipated this situation when they decided to attend their graduation exam. Despite this, they still chose to come, so both children made up their minds to ensure that they didn’t disappoint their parents.

In particular, Sasuke was determined to come out on top so that everyone could shut their mouths and not point their fingers at his father for losing his eyes.

Although he had lost his eyes, formerly being a Kage-level shinobi expert who had awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan, Fugaku was far more perceptive compared to any other blind person. Therefore, he was well aware of the people pointing at him and whispering around him, but he didn’t care. The only thing he cared about now was to stimulate Sasuke so that his younger son could awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan.

Of course, it’s not that Fugaku is completely helpless; he is still quite adept at sensing Chakra. So, after taking a brief look at all the children, Fugaku muttered to himself in a voice that was only audible to his wife, “As expected from the Jinchuriki of Nine-tails… even without the Jinchuriki, his Chakra is very strong. Whether Godaime-sama’s plan will work this time or not will also depend on him.”

Sitting beside Fugaku, Mikoto also looked at the blonde sunny boy and nodded with a smile. “Uzumaki Naruto, he really is a shadow of both Minato and Kushina-chan. More than anything, I want them to have fun… something like awakening the Mangekyou Sharingan; there might be more opportunities in the future.”

“By the way, how much time is left for the exam?” asked Fugaku.

The one to answer the question was Izumi. “Chichiue-sama, Hahaue-sama, I have confirmed from Itachi-kun that the exam will commence within half an hour.”

“I see,” nodded Fugaku as he folded his hands over his chest and sat silently.

Izumi turned to Mikoto and said, “Well then, Hahaue-sama… I will be going…”

Before Mikoto could nod, suddenly a person scolded her from the side. “Izumi… shouldn’t you watch this thing with your family? Where are you going?” The one who scolded Izumi was Uchiha Hazuki, Izumi’s mother.

“Ah… Kaa-san… that…” Izumi hesitated to answer her mother.

Mikoto reassured Izumi’s mother, saying, “It’s alright Hazuki-san…” then turned to Izumi, “Izumi-chan, go and have fun!”

“Thank you, Hahaue-sama!” nodded Izumi with a bright smile, then quickly left before her mother could say anything.

With Izumi gone, Hazuki sighed. “Honestly, that girl, she can be quite frivolous sometimes.”

Mikoto shook her head. “Not at all, Hazuki-san. Izumi-chan has been very good, and despite being so young, she has perfectly taken charge of the house. What more can we ask from her…? In fact, I told her to spend the day with her friends. Staying distant from them all the time is not good.”

“Well, if Mikoto-san said so, then there is nothing I can do about it,” muttered Hazuki. Although she did not sound all that enthusiastic on the surface, internally, Hazuki was very happy that her daughter and Mikoto had a close bond, and Izumi did not feel restrained.
