Chapter 966: The Judges

The rooftop of the Konoha Ninja Academy

Leaning on the railing, Shinichi remarked, “Sasuke’s looking pretty sharp today. Maybe it’ll happen today.”

Shisui inquired, “You think he’s ready?”

Shinichi nonchalantly responded, “I’ve covered everything about the Sharingan with him, and taught him how to use it as much as I could. But, you know, now it’s all up to him and his fellow trainees… whether they can really push him to that level will determine everything.”

After a moment of contemplation, Shisui stated, “Given that Kuroto-san was personally instructing Uzumaki Naruto-kun, there shouldn’t be any issues.”

Shinichi replied, “Like I said, who knows? It might turn out perfectly, or it might not. You can never be too certain about these things. Even Boss isn’t completely sure if it’ll work this time. He’s hopeful, but there’s no certainty.”

Shisui let out a sigh. “I really hope so. Itachi, Fugaku-sama, Mikoto-sama—they’re going through a tough time. And Sasuke… it’s not easy for him either.” He then looked at Fugaku in the crowd. “Fugaku-sama even came here following Kuroto-san’s instructions. It must have been incredibly challenging for him. I just hope it’s all worth it.”

It’s clear that Fugaku and Mikoto are present at the Graduation Exam due to Kuroto’s instructions. Kuroto had crafted a detailed, step-by-step stimulation plan for Sasuke, aiming to awaken his Mangekyou Sharingan during a significant event—the graduation exam happening today. While the outcome is uncertain, there’s anticipation and expectation on many faces.

Just picture this—Fugaku, who has already faced the loss of his eyes and harbors high hopes for Sasuke, attends his graduation exam to personally support him. Despite enduring the scorn of others, Sasuke ends up losing, bringing shame not only to himself but also to the Uchiha Clan and his father. Can you imagine the despair Fugaku might feel?

This scenario has already played out once when Sasuke faced Kimimaro a few years ago. Now, Kuroto is planning to replicate that same scenario, hoping that, just like that day, Sasuke will awaken his eyes. The only difference this time is that instead of awakening the Sharingan, Sasuke is expected to unlock the Mangekyou Sharingan after experiencing humiliation and shame.

Shinichi remarked, “Whether it works out or not is beyond our control. If it’s meant to happen, it will; if not, it won’t. There’s no use worrying about it.”

Shisui nodded in agreement, saying, “I know.”

“Good then,” Shinichi added, and, after surveying the crowd and the surroundings once more, he playfully told Shisui, “Well, isn’t it almost time for you to go? It’s starting, right? As one of the ‘Judges,’ you can’t be late!” The last part was delivered with a teasing tone.

Not caring about Shinichi’s teasing, Shisui simply nodded. “I know,” he replied, and added, “The security and other matters, I’ll leave to you, Shinichi. Please make sure that nothing out of order happens.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Shinichi reassured.

With that, Shisui wasted no more time and swiftly made his way to the special seat that had been prepared for him and the other two judges.

Kakashi wore a frowning expression as he observed the abrupt shift in Sasuke’s demeanor. Just moments ago, everything seemed normal, but now there was a noticeable change. Sasuke’s face turned colder; his determination more evident. Kakashi couldn’t help but wonder, “What happened to him all of a sudden? Why this sudden surge of determination?”

Following Sasuke’s gaze, Kakashi also spotted Uchiha Fugaku, Uchiha Mikoto, and Uchiha Hazuki among the crowd. He pondered, “Is it… because of his family?”

During the seven months Kakashi spent training Sasuke, he gained a deeper understanding of Sasuke’s character. Despite Sasuke’s outward appearance of arrogance and coldness, Kakashi recognized a warm-hearted and caring child beneath the surface, one laden with insecurities.

Above all, Kakashi realized that Sasuke aspires to emulate his elder brother and father. Living in their shadows hasn’t been about escaping; instead, Sasuke harbors a profound admiration for them and yearns to be like them. His constant eagerness is driven by a strong desire to gain approval from both his brother and father.

A single compliment or praise from Itachi or Fugaku has the power to brighten Sasuke’s entire day, keeping a smile on his face for several days. Conversely, their disappointment can plunge him into a state of depression and despondency that lingers for an extended period.

Kakashi finds himself in a dilemma, uncertain about how to handle such a situation. While he acknowledges that Sasuke’s emotional responsiveness is not inherently negative and understands him well, Kakashi also senses an underlying issue. Drawing from his own experiences as a child, Kakashi recognizes similarities between his past self and Sasuke. Yet, he can’t shake the instinctive feeling that something might be amiss in this dynamic. He couldn’t help but silently question, “Are they putting pressure on Sasuke? No, that shouldn’t be the case, right? Why would they do such a thing?”

Just as Kakashi was contemplating Sasuke’s family situation, a voice from behind interrupted his thoughts. “Do what?”

Turning around, Kakashi saw that the speaker was none other than Kuroto, who gazed at him with a curious expression. “What were you mumbling about?” Kuroto inquired.

Kakashi sighed and shook his head. “Nothing, just something on my mind.”

Kuroto nonchalantly shrugged. “Well, whatever. Come on, let’s go. It’s about to start, and the judges can’t be late, right?”

Kakashi nodded in agreement. “Yeah.” The two of them, along with the Hokage and the Hokage’s Hand, proceeded towards the special seat prepared for them as the judges.

At that moment, Uchiha Itachi, the principal of the Konoha Ninja Academy, took the stage along with Might Guy.

Due to Kuroto’s interference, the atmosphere at the Konoha Ninja Academy differed significantly from the laid-back and straightforward environment depicted in the Canon. The Shinobi World had experienced a decade of intense turmoil, resulting in a strict approach to the training of academy students.

Kuroto initiated this tradition during his tenure as the principal, and even after Itachi assumed the role, he maintained the tradition, preserving a similar environment. The present-day education system at the Konoha Ninja Academy was considerably more stringent than it had been during the Third Great Shinobi War or the Second Great Shinobi War.

Nevertheless, in this rigorous setting, children were provided with ample resources, time, guidance, and support to ensure their proper development.

For these reasons, the Graduation Exam’s content wouldn’t be as straightforward as the Three Basic Ninjutsu. In this iteration, the exam would take the form of an actual battle, and only the top fifty trainees earning the most points would be permitted to graduate.

Standing on the podium, Itachi cast his gaze over all the trainees and made the announcement, “Today’s graduation exam is a one-on-one battle.” This was within most of the trainees’ expectations.

But before Itachi could continue any further, at this juncture, Guy declared, “Now, before delving into the rules, let’s acquaint ourselves with the judges for today’s Graduation Exam” He gestured toward the three individuals sitting on the Judge’s seat as he spoke, saying, “On the left, we have the Strongest Shinobi in Konohagakure, currently serving as the Captain of the Konoha Military Police Force, Uchiha Shisui of the Body Flicker.”

In response to the cheers, Shisui stood up, waving to the crowd, though he couldn’t shake a hint of embarrassment at the introduction.

Guy proceeded, “On the right, we have the Fastest Shinobi in Konohagakure, presently serving as the Hokage’s Hand, Thundering Flash of Konoha, and my eternal rival, Hatake Kakashi.”

Kakashi stood up and waved, his expression portraying an air of laziness and fatigue that seemed to convey, ‘Can I go home now?’

Once more, Guy continued, “And in the center, we have our very own Hero, who risked his life and saved the village from Satori’s attack not too long ago, serving as the Godaime Hokage of Konoha, my friend and comrade in need, the wittiest Hokage, Hyuga Kuroto!”

Internally, Kuroto pondered, ‘Guy, what are you doing?’ With a troubled expression on his face, Kuroto rose and waved to the crowd in response to their cheers.

Guy added, “Together, the three of them are called the Sannin of the New Generation, everyone please welcome them!”

Immediately, there was a huge round of applause and cheers from the crowd.

“Thank you, Guy-san, for their introduction…” nodded Itachi and said, “And now, let’s get back to the rules…”
