Chapter 920: Fugaku’s Redemption?
“Give up my Mangekyou Sharingan?” Fugaku muttered with a sneer. He continued, saying, “Humph… so it’s all for the Mangekyou Sharingan… they really are coveting these eyes… I would rather destroy my Mangekyou Sharingan than give it to them!” He began to gather chakra in his eyes, seemingly intent on burning them. Fugaku was determined not to let anyone use his eyes.
Itachi hurriedly clarified, “Otou-sama… wait… You are misunderstanding! You only need to give up the Mangekyou Sharingan; it will not be handed over to the village… The one keeping these eyes will be me!”
“You will be keeping my eyes?” Fugaku was surprised and questioned, “Do you think that those Elders will accept this?”
Itachi replied with a smile, “They will be told that Amatsukami has stolen your eyes.”
A few days ago, during their planning to deal with the entire Uchiha Coup d’état situation, Kuroto, and Itachi had a lengthy discussion about Fugaku’s Mangekyou Sharingan. If Sasuke were to awaken the Mangekyou Sharingan, which was highly likely, there would be three pairs of Mangekyou Sharingan connected by blood relationship. Among these three pairs, two could be fused to awaken the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan.
In the original Naruto story, after the Uchiha Clan’s annihilation, the pair of Mangekyou Sharingan in Fugaku’s eyes disappeared, likely because he destroyed his eyes to ensure that Konoha would never get their hands on them. This led Itachi to give up his own eyes for Sasuke, a significant sacrifice.
However, in this world, such an outcome wouldn’t be acceptable since Itachi’s strength is considered crucial. Kuroto, not wanting the cycle of hatred between the village and the Uchiha Clan to escalate, also doesn’t want Fugaku to die. Instead, it’s decided that Fugaku, the leader who planned the Coup d’état, should be punished but not killed. To achieve this, Fugaku’s source of strength, his Mangekyou Sharingan, would be taken away.
Taking away Fugaku’s eyes, the root of his power, not only appeases the other leaders of Konoha but also provides the opportunity to create a pair of Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan. The decision has been made to use Fugaku’s Mangekyou Sharingan to give birth to this powerful new set.
As for whether Itachi or Sasuke will ultimately use Fugaku’s eyes, Kuroto has yet to finalize that decision.
Considering that Sasuke is the reincarnation of Ōtsutsuki Indra and possesses the ultimate Yin-Chakra in his body, there’s a strong possibility that he will awaken the Rinnegan in the future. Therefore, it makes sense to transplant Fugaku’s eyes into Sasuke to help him awaken the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan and prepare him for the eventual awakening of the Rinnegan.Upon hearing Itachi’s words, Fugaku halted. “You will be safe keeping my eyes? While Amatsukami will carry the blame?” he questioned skeptically. “But will Amatsukami recognize this?”
Itachi reassured him, “Rest assured, Otou-sama… Hokage-sama has reached an agreement with Amatsukami, and these were his terms… so there is no problem… Amatsukami has accepted it and given their word.”
Fugaku remained skeptical and expressed his worry. “Can Godaime really prepare such an elaborate plan? Itachi, you must be careful… this could also be a trap!”
Due to being deceived by Sarutobi Hiruzen multiple times, Fugaku developed a deep mistrust of the Hokage faction. He couldn’t help but be wary that this might be another form of deception.
Itachi responded with a smile, “I was present with Hokage-sama when he discussed the details with Homusubi, so I know that there is no problem.” He added, “No Uchiha Clansmen stepped out of the Uchiha district tonight… those who did have already been killed by Amatsukami… in the end, the Uchiha Clan did not rebel tonight; instead, they were attacked by Amatsukami for their Sharingan.”
Fugaku questioned, “Was everything arranged by Godaime?”
“Yes,” Itachi nodded and explained, “So, as long as you give up your Mangekyou Sharingan, resign from the position of the Patriarch of the Uchiha Clan as well as the Captain of the Konoha Military Police Force, and live the rest of your life in retreat, there will be no problem. The elders of the Advisory board will have no choice but to accept these results, and the Uchiha Clansmen who are still alive will not be held responsible for rebellion.”
Not wanting to escalate or perpetuate the cycle of hatred between the Uchiha Clan and the Hokage faction was just one of the reasons why Kuroto wanted Fugaku to stay alive. In the events of tonight, if only Fugaku were to die while Shisui and Shinichi remained unharmed, it would raise suspicions among the Uchiha Clansmen and the village. Kuroto wanted to avoid such complications.
Fugaku’s value as a non-renewable resource extends to several crucial factors. Firstly, as a Kage-level shinobi, his strength is unquestionable, and as Hokage, Kuroto doesn’t want to see such a valuable asset die for nothing. That’s just one aspect of Fugaku’s importance. The other aspect pertains to Sasuke.
Sasuke’s emotional triggers for unlocking his Sharingan and Mangekyou Sharingan differ from most other Uchiha. He didn’t awaken the Mangekyou Sharingan after witnessing the annihilation of the Uchiha Clan, nor after his parents’ deaths, nor even after Itachi’s demise. Instead, he unlocked it after learning about Itachi’s past, the truth behind the Uchiha Clan’s annihilation, and the suffering Itachi endured in the original canon.
Now that the Uchiha Clan has not been annihilated and Itachi doesn’t have to endure that suffering, Kuroto must devise an alternative plan for Sasuke to awaken the Mangekyou Sharingan. This step is crucial for Sasuke’s future strength and the eventual awakening of the Rinnegan. Without unlocking the Mangekyou Sharingan, Sasuke’s potential achievements would be limited.
To ensure that Sasuke progresses as needed, Fugaku will be kept alive and used as a tool to occasionally stimulate Sasuke. These stimuli will drive Sasuke to pursue strength and ultimately unlock the Mangekyou Sharingan in the future.
Kuroto’s motivation for taking these actions on behalf of Sasuke is straightforward: the future is uncertain, and the world he now finds himself in is vastly different from what he remembers in the original Canon. Given this unpredictability, it’s prudent to have as many strategic advantages as possible.
Kuroto recognizes the exceptional potential in several young individuals, including Naruto, Sasuke, Rock Lee, Karin, Shion, Mea, and Neji. He is determined not to let their potential go to waste. Throughout the millennia-long history of the Shinobi World, very few have qualified to reach the level of the Six Paths. For most shinobi, their potential and upper limits are largely predetermined by factors like their bloodline, clan, parentage, and available resources.
Even exceptional talents like Orochimaru, often considered a once-in-a-generation prodigy, struggle to ascend to the level of a Super Kage, let alone the Six Paths. However, in the next generation, several children possess such extraordinary potential—Naruto, Sasuke, and Karin among them. These children are Kuroto’s trump cards.
To ensure their growth and strength, Kuroto believes they must undergo the necessary trials and tribulations, for true strength is often forged through suffering. Uchiha Fugaku’s continued existence will become a source of Sasuke’s suffering, pushing him to his limits.
In this way, Fugaku’s redemption takes the form of serving as a catalyst for Sasuke’s growth.
