The Meng family relied on the Qin family for support. Given the situation, the only ones with the influence and willingness to intervene on the Mengs’ behalf were, quite clearly, the Qins. Lu Cheng didn’t consider any other possibility.

The reason none of this had come to light before was that the Meng family had kept it all under wraps, using a combination of bribes and threats to silence everyone involved.

Now, the story was spreading like wildfire, causing a massive uproar.

Suddenly, Meng Chengyu’s name was on everyone’s lips throughout the city—and not in a good way.

By the time the Meng family got word of it, the story about Meng Chengyu was already public knowledge. It was too late to suppress it.
