Chapter 527: Get Married

While Zhai Heng returned to the Zhai family, Han Ruochen returned to the Han family. However, as soon as she returned home, she ran into Aunt Xiao, the village head’s wife.

"Aunt Xiao, what are you doing here?" Han Ruochen walked over and asked when she saw that the old woman was waiting for her along with a middle-aged woman and a man. From the looks of it, the man was in his thirties as well, but because of the lack of care that he had shown for his own body, he had gone to seed. When she saw these three people, she could not help but frown. What was Aunt Xiao doing here, and that too with two strangers?

Aunt Xiao turned to look at Han Ruochen with a smile that was not a smile and then said to her, "Ruochen, you are here. I have been waiting for you for more than half a day. Where were you just now?"

Han Ruochen was speechless hearing the lies that were coming out of Aunt Xiao’s mouth. She had just gone out of her house to see Zhai Heng off, and not once did she see this old woman standing outside the house just now. However, even though Han Ruochen had some qualms about Aunt Xiao, she did not say anything.

Because this woman was the wife of the village chief in the end.

If she ended up saying anything rude, who knows what this woman might say to the village chief?

However, what Han Ruochen did not expect was that even though she did not go looking for trouble, trouble would come looking for her either way.

"Xiao Ruochen, this is Aunt Sun and her son. You can call him Brother Xiujun." Aunt Xiao introduced the two people to Han Ruochen, making her even more confused. She could not understand why Aunt Xiao was introducing the two people to her. But she still nodded at the two of them in a polite greeting. "Is there something the matter?"

Aunt Xiao clapped her hands together with a smile. "Oh, Ruochen. You are right. There is indeed something that I want to discuss with your mother." She paused and looked around the Han family house. "Where is your mother? I want to discuss the matter of your marriage with her."

Han Ruochen frowned, and her expression turned sullen. She chased people out by saying, "I am not going to get married right now. Go find someone else to propose marriage to."

Aunt Xiao had come looking for her; how could she leave so soon? Han Ruochen had hoodwinked her son, and he was refusing one match after another. It was better for her to make Han Ruochen be married off to someone as soon as possible so that her son could marry a good girl from a good family.

"Ruochen, what are you saying? What girl does not marry? This family that I brought you today is well off. The groom’s family is willing to give you a dowry of five hundred yuan if things go well between the two of you. Just think about the five hundred yuan."

When the price of five hundred yuan was mentioned, the neighbours on the west side, along with Second Aunt Han, came out from next door.

Second Aunt Han was leaning against the fence; she laughed and said, "Oh, it seems like you are quite popular Ruochen; you don’t even look at five hundred yuan. Where can you find a family that is willing to give five hundred yuan? I have never seen such a sum before. Even your uncle gave me thirty yuan when he came to propose marriage to me."

Han Ruochen did not want to say anything to her second aunt lest she end up quarrelling with the woman. "Aunt Xiao, I have no intention of marrying anyone. And there is no point in talking with my mother either; it is my own affair, and my father has given me enough freedom to deal with my own issues. So don’t try to make me get married to someone I don’t even know."

Aunt Xiao was furious when she heard Han Ruochen’s repeated rejection. However, she could not leave. The issue of her son’s marriage was yet to be over. How could she watch her son be ruined by this vixen? She had to make sure that Han Ruochen got married and she got married as soon as possible; that too very far.

"Ruochen, I heard that your betrothal has fallen through and Yang Jianming is not going to marry you either. Even if the times are changing, no man would be willing to marry a woman who was engaged to someone. These days it is hard for women like you to get a respectable match, much less a match that is willing to pay you five hundred yuan as dowry."

Han Ruochen turned angry when she heard Aunt Xiao talk about Yang Jianming. Was she some kind of stupid appliance? That her value went down just because she was engaged before. That was not true. "What kind of forceful act of marriage is this? I already said that I won’t do it. Five hundred yuan might be enough for some people, but it is not enough for me. I can easily earn five hundred yuan by going to the sea." Did she look like someone who was lacking five hundred yuan? Of course not!

Her life was incredibly precious to her, and she was not going to sell it off for a little price of five hundred yuan!

Aunt Xiao rolled her eyes; with her hands on her hips, she said, "Ruochen, you cannot be stubborn. So what if you can earn money by going to the sea? Money is not everything; you cannot be so stubborn. Your family situation is quite hard as well, and you are looking down on five hundred yuan today? Who knows, you might be dying to get your hands on five hundred yuan tomorrow because who knows if your father can recover like he used to?"

Second Aunt Han could not help but chime in when she heard Han Ruochen’s refusal to get married. "Yes, Ruochen. Your standards are way too high. This is not right; if you go on like this, you will ruin your own life. A girl cannot stay single forever, can she? If you ruin such a good marriage, you will blame yourself in the near future."

"Auntie, what are you messing around with again? Who are you trying to put a hat on now?" Han Ruochen wanted to ignore the woman, but Second Aunt Han just couldn’t keep her nose to herself. She pursed her lips and turned to look at her second aunt. Since she wanted to get a reaction out of her, then she would give her one.

Second Aunt Han saw Han Ruochen getting angry and laughed. "Ruochen, I know that you feel like I am poking my nose in your business, but the truth is that Aunt Xiao is doing a good job. She actually came up with the dowry of five hundred yuan for you. No one will be willing to offer such a high price for you. It is a wonderful match. They don’t even mind that you have been engaged before, so why are you hesitating? If this really worked out, then you will be able to live a good life. Just enjoy the comforts. What are you worrying about? Your mother will definitely agree to this matchmaking; why don’t you ask her first?"

"Aren’t you just ruining your chances by acting all stubborn?"

Aunt Xiao’s eyes fell on Second Aunt Han and she nodded. It seemed like there was someone smart in this family.

Han Ruochen smiled when she heard Second Aunt Han saying such a thing. "This family doesn’t mind that I was engaged in the past, and they even gave me a dowry of five hundred as a bride price. Auntie, are you that envious? Are you jealous because I am this lucky?"

Second Aunt Han waved her hand and said, "Of course not; I knew you were lucky since the day I saw you after you were born. I know that you are really good."

Han Ruochen rolled her eyes. "Such a good life, Auntie, don’t you want it? He does not mind that I was engaged, so I am sure that he will not mind if you are divorced either. So divorce my uncle and get married to this man as soon as possible. Even though you are old and almost bald, you will be able to get a dowry of five hundred yuan. What a wonderful sum!
