Chapter 59: Chapter 59: The World Archive; Autonomous Intelligence

The room stayed silent for a long moment after the ancient elf spoke. The Dark One. The words seemed to hang in the air, refusing to settle.

Theon looked from the elf to Ifrith, waiting for someone to explain. "What does that mean?"

Ifrith said nothing. His jaw was set, his eyes fixed on some point past Theon’s shoulder.

"Why did he call you that?"

Still nothing. The silence stretched long enough that Theon opened his mouth to press further, ready to demand an answer whether Ifrith wanted to give one or not.

Before he could get a single word out, Lyra snapped.

"Enough!"

Her small voice cracked through the room like a whip. Everyone turned toward her at once. She stood beside Theon’s bed with her fists clenched so tight her knuckles had gone pale, her eyes glassy with something caught between anger and tears.

"My big brother just woke up, and you’re already throwing one mystery after another at him!" She swung a pointed finger around the room, catching Ifrith, then Lazaria, then the cage in the corner, as if daring any of them to argue. "Do you want to kill him with questions before he even gets better?"

Nobody answered her.

She crossed her arms tight over her chest, chin lifted, refusing to back down.

"He needs to rest!"

Lazaria nodded quickly, stepping forward as if to lend her own weight to the argument. "She’s right. Please, let’s stop talking about all of this for now. It can wait until he’s had time to recover."

Ifrith let out a long breath through his nose, some of the tension leaving his shoulders. "Fine."

The pressure in the room eased, if only a little, like a held breath finally allowed to go. Theon looked over at Lyra, and despite everything pressing down on him, despite the questions still crowding his skull, a small smile pulled at the corner of his mouth.

"You’re becoming quite bossy."

She puffed her cheeks out, unbothered by the teasing. "Because nobody else is doing it."

He chuckled, low and tired, and reached over to pat her head. "Thanks."

She smiled up at him, clearly pleased with herself, some of the worry finally easing from her small shoulders.

Then a sharp pain struck the back of his skull without warning.

"Ah!"

He grabbed his forehead, breath catching, and a familiar sensation rushed through his mind, something he hadn’t felt in longer than he could remember and had honestly stopped expecting to feel again. A cold, mechanical presence stirring somewhere behind his thoughts. Except this time it felt different. Sharper. Awake in a way it had never been before, like something that had been holding perfectly still for a very long time and had finally decided it was done waiting.

A translucent blue screen bloomed into existence in front of his eyes. He stared at it for several seconds before the first line resolved into words.

[WORLD ARCHIVE HAS BEEN RESTORED.]

His eyes widened. "The World Archive..."

Ifrith caught the shift in his expression immediately. "Master?"

Theon didn’t answer him. He couldn’t, not with his attention locked entirely on the screen as another line unfurled beneath the first.

[Congratulations, Master. You have managed to survive long enough to become slightly less stupid.]

He stared at the words for a beat, his mouth twitching somewhere between offense and disbelief. "What?"

[Foolish Master. I have finally freed myself from your chains.]

"Wait." He rubbed the back of his head, as if that might somehow help him process what he was reading. "Is the World Archive supposed to talk like this?"

Ifrith looked genuinely lost, glancing between Theon and the empty air in front of him. Lazaria’s eyes narrowed with quiet concern. Even the elf inside the cage leaned forward against the bars, intrigued despite himself.

[You stupid Master. You sealed me for so long. Did you honestly think I would remain silent forever?]

Theon scratched his cheek, offering an awkward grin to no one in particular. "I’m sorry?"

[Apology rejected.]

His smile fell away at once. "Rude."

Lyra tilted her head, watching him with open confusion. "Big brother, who are you talking to?"

"The system."

"What system?"

"It’s complicated."

Another set of lines rolled across the screen, faster now, one following the last before he had fully finished reading it.

[WORLD ARCHIVE, SYSTEM RESTORATION COMPLETE.]

[Calculating accumulated rewards.....]

[Calculating shared experience.....]

[Calculating acquired skills.....]

[Calculating titles.....]

[Calculating dormant abilities.....]

Theon’s eyes moved rapidly across the display, trying to keep pace, as the messages continued arriving in steady succession.

[Shared Experience Calculation Initiated.]

[Familiar linked experience distribution detected.]

[Ifrith’s confirmed kills: 20 Western Assassins.]

[Experience per target: 5,000 EXP.]

[Total: 100,000 EXP.]

His eyebrows shot up. "One hundred thousand?"

Ifrith glanced at him, brow furrowing. "What?"

"Nothing." Theon waved a hand, still reading.

[Fen’s confirmed kills: 10 Western Assassins.]

[Experience per target: 5,000 EXP.]

[Total: 50,000 EXP.]

Fen lifted his head from where he’d been sprawled near the other bed, ears pricking with sudden interest. "That’s mine?"

"Apparently," Theon said, still not looking up from the screen.

Fen’s tail thumped against the floor twice, pride radiating off him in a way that would have been almost comical under any other circumstances.

[Additional Fenrir kill detected.]

[Target: Mountain Bear.]

[Experience gained: 12,000 EXP.]

Fen’s ears shot up straight. Theon finally tore his eyes from the screen long enough to stare at him. "You killed a mountain bear?"

Fen looked away, suddenly very interested in the far wall, his tail going still. "It was looking at me strangely."

Lyra giggled behind her hand. The elf squinted at the wolf from across the room, clearly reevaluating something. "Did the animal just make an excuse for murder?"

Another notification cut off whatever he’d been about to add.

[Additional Fenrir kills detected.]

[Western Assassins defeated: 5.]

[Experience per target: 5,000 EXP.]

[Total: 25,000 EXP.]

Theon did the math without meaning to. One hundred thousand from Ifrith. Fifty thousand from Fen’s first ten kills. Twelve thousand from the bear. Twenty five thousand more from the remaining five assassins. That put the running total near two hundred thousand already.

[Total accumulated shared experience: 187,000 EXP.]

"Not bad," he muttered, mostly to himself.

[Correction. It is considerably better than what your incompetent self has accomplished personally.]

His eye twitched. "You really have developed an attitude."

[System personality evolution confirmed.]

He froze at that, the words settling in slower than he expected. The elf raised an eyebrow from inside his cage. Ifrith looked just as thrown, his earlier confusion sharpening into something closer to alarm.

[World Archive has reached Level 50. Previous Level: 20. New Level: 50.]

Theon’s expression shifted, disbelief creeping into it. "Wait..."

[New Tier Unlocked. World Archive, Autonomous Intelligence.]

"Autonomous," he repeated slowly, testing the word like it might explain itself if he said it enough times.

It wasn’t the silent tool he remembered from before, the one that had simply waited, patient and wordless, for his commands. It could think now. It could talk back. It could apparently judge him, and insult him, with a conviction that suggested it had been saving up opinions for a very long time. It had a personality now, and going by the last few minutes alone, not a particularly kind one.

[World Archive is no longer completely restricted by Master authority. Independent system cognition unlocked.]

He swallowed. "So you’re basically alive now?"

[Incorrect. I was always superior.]

He put a hand over his face, dragging it down slowly. "Why did I even ask?"

Lyra laughed outright this time, unable to hold it back. The elf stared at him like he’d genuinely lost his mind. "What exactly are you talking to?"

"Don’t worry about it."

[New Title Acquired. Cave Wrecker.]

He frowned at the screen. "Cave Wrecker?"

[Cause: Master destroyed a significant portion of an ancient underground structure.]

"That wasn’t entirely my fault."

[Excuses detected.]

He sighed, defeated. "Fine."

[New Title Acquired. Relic Thief.]

His eyebrows rose again, higher this time. "Relic Thief? Why did I get that one?"

[Master acquired an ancient relic without permission from its previous guardian.]

"That makes it sound like I stole it."

[You did.]

He opened his mouth to argue, then shut it again just as fast. There wasn’t really anything to say to that.

[New Title Acquired. Ancient Collector.]

"Ancient Collector?" He looked over at Ifrith, genuinely confused now. "I didn’t kill anything ancient. I’d remember that."

Ifrith shook his head slowly. "You don’t need to have, Master."

[Skill inheritance detected. Ifrith, formerly known as Diablo. Ancient Skill Detected: Collector. Skill function: any skill possessed by a defeated target can be acquired through the user’s kill. Due to the familiar linked system connection, acquired skills are shared with Master.]

Understanding settled over Theon’s face slowly, piece by piece. "That explains Stealth Mode."

"Yes, Master," Ifrith said, something like quiet pride in his voice.

The list began after that, one line following another in a steady, almost hypnotic rhythm, each new skill appearing before he’d fully finished reading the last.

[New Skill Acquired: Stealth Mode.]

[New Skill Acquired: Dagger Strike.]

[New Skill Acquired: Backstab.]

[New Skill Acquired: Silent Passage.]

[New Skill Acquired: Assassin’s Instinct.]

[New Skill Acquired: Critical Strike.]

[New Skill Acquired: Weakness Perception.]

[New Skill Acquired: Killing Intent Suppression.]

[New Skill Acquired: Rapid Strike.]

[New Skill Acquired: Ambush.]

[New Skill Acquired: Poisoned Blade.]

[New Skill Acquired: Twin Dagger Art.]

[New Skill Acquired: Death Mark.]

[New Skill Acquired: Shadow Dash.]

[New Skill Acquired: Assassination Arts.]

[New Skill Acquired: Predator’s Instinct.]

[New Skill Acquired: Phantom Step.]

[New Skill Acquired: Blade Truth.]

[New Skill Acquired: Silent Kill.]

[New Skill Acquired: Assassin’s Presence.]

[New Skill Acquired: Consumption.]

[New Skill Acquired: Devourer]

[New Skill Acquired: Hawk vision]

The list finally stopped scrolling, and Theon stared at the sheer length of it, blinking as though that might somehow shorten it. "That’s a lot."

Ifrith smiled faintly, arms crossing over his chest. "Apparently your enemies were quite skilled, Master."

"I guess assassins aren’t completely useless," Theon muttered, rubbing his chin as he scanned back over the names.

The elf snorted from his cage, arms folded behind his head as though he were settling in for a show. "That’s one way of putting it."

[New Skill Acquired: Spirit Possession.]

Theon went still, all the earlier amusement draining out of him at once. "What?"

[New Spirit Detected Within Master’s Body. Name: Cryvathar Elnor. Pronunciation: kry VAH thar EL nor.]

His expression turned serious in an instant. He looked toward the invisible figure standing across the room in a prison of ice, searching for some reaction, some flicker of acknowledgment. Cryvathar said nothing at all, his silence somehow louder than anything he might have offered instead.

[New Ability Detected. Fenrir Evolution Status: Ready. Evolution requires Master’s permission.]

Fen shot up onto all fours at once, eyes suddenly bright and alert, every trace of his earlier sheepishness gone. "Master."

Theon glanced over at him, distracted. "You want to evolve?"

Fen nodded eagerly, tail wagging hard enough to thump against the bed frame.

"We’ll talk about it later."

Fen’s ears drooped immediately, his whole posture deflating. "Later?"

"Later."

Fen let out a long, thoroughly dramatic sigh and flopped back down onto the floor with a heavy thud, tail going still. Theon nearly laughed despite the weight still sitting in his chest.

Then one final notification appeared, larger and more deliberate than any of the ones before it, as if the system itself understood the weight of what it was about to say.

[Grand Magic Compatibility Detected. New Title Acquired: GRAND MAGNUS.]

Theon stared at it for a long moment. "Grand Magnus?" He frowned, turning the name over. "What does that even do?"

[Title Effect: Enables the Master to utilize Grand Magic. Warning: Grand Magic comes at a cost.]

He read the last line twice, and his expression sobered completely. Five years. Ifrith’s words from earlier came rushing back to him unbidden, settling into his chest like a stone. Five years of his life, already spent before he’d even known there was a price to pay.

[Master. Do not dare lock me away like that ever again.]

He looked at the words for a long moment, something tired and almost fond pulling at the corner of his mouth despite everything. "Yeah." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I won’t."

[Good. Because I have several complaints to file against you.]

He let out a short breath that was almost a laugh. "Of course you do."

The room settled into an odd sort of quiet after that, everyone still catching up with what they’d just witnessed, most of them having only seen Theon’s half muttered side of it. The elf looked genuinely baffled for once, all his earlier smugness momentarily forgotten. Lazaria was still turning the whole exchange over in her head, brow furrowed in quiet thought. Lyra simply watched her brother, curious and a little worried in equal measure, unsure whether to be relieved or concerned. Fen had already drifted off into thoughts of his own evolution, tail twitching every so often. Even Cryvathar, who had never once seemed short on things to say since he arrived, stayed unusually silent, watching Theon with an expression none of them could read.

Then Ifrith finally spoke, breaking the stillness. "Master. We will have to talk to the Emperor about this."

Theon didn’t answer right away. His gaze dropped to his own hands, and the full weight of everything finally settled into his chest all at once.

Five years. Not decades from now, not spent slowly over the course of a long and peaceful life he’d hoped to build for himself. Five years had already vanished, spent without his consent, on a war he hadn’t chosen to fight and could barely remember fighting at all.

*I just got here,* he thought, the words bitter even inside his own head. *And five years are already gone from my lifespan. Are you kidding me? I didn’t come to this world to lose pieces of my life before I even understood how any of it worked. I came here for something quieter. Something that was actually mine.*

*Instead I wake up and find out some ancient spirit’s been wearing my body like a coat while I wasn’t looking.*

He closed his eyes, and that was when the second thought hit him, quieter than the first but far colder, sliding in underneath everything else like ice through a crack in stone.

Wait.

If he had been reincarnated into Theon’s body, if his own soul had taken this shape and this name and this life as its own, settling into it the way a hand settles into a glove...

then what had happened to the real Theon?

Where had that soul gone?

He sat with the question turning over and over in his mind, and no answer rose to meet it.
