Reborn as The Seventh Prince of Eternal Winter
Chapter 57: The Truth Within
Chapter 57: Chapter 57: The Truth Within
Her final words hung in the air long after she had spoken them.
"You’re finally back for me, my love."
The voice was soft, almost too soft for a place that had just watched a battle nearly tear the cave apart. Dust still drifted through the cold air. Somewhere behind Theon, a slab of ice groaned and settled, the sound rolling off the walls like a held breath finally released. He stood frozen at the center of it all, and for reasons he couldn’t name, his heart tightened in his chest.
A breeze slipped past him, cold and faint at first, then stronger, curling against his cheek and threading through his silver hair. It smelled of old stone and older magic, the kind that clung to a place long after whatever had made it was gone. He turned toward it.
And stopped.
She was standing behind him. Barely holding herself upright, her body trembling under the weight of an exhaustion that seemed to reach back further than the fight that had just ended. The chains that had bound her for what must have been thousands of years hung broken around her wrists and ankles, their shattered links scattered across the frozen floor like the bones of something long dead. Pale hair fell across her face in damp strands. Her eyes were only half open, glassy with fatigue, and yet steady on him.
But when they found his, something inside Theon shifted, quiet and immediate, like a door easing open somewhere deep in a house he thought he knew every room of.
He didn’t know her. He was certain of that much. And yet the instant their eyes met, a feeling rushed through him that he had no name for. Not the warm ache of remembering a childhood moment, not even the pull of a face he’d seen once in passing. This was deeper. Nostalgic. Something buried so far inside him that even he couldn’t reach down to touch it, only feel its shape pressing up from underneath.
For a heartbeat, the ruined cave seemed to fall away entirely. The shattered walls. The frozen battlefield stretching out behind him, littered with the wreckage of a fight that should have killed him twice over. The unconscious ancient elf slumped near the far wall. Even his friends, waiting somewhere beyond the edge of his vision, seemed to recede into a great distance. There was only her, and the strange, aching certainty that he had been searching for her long before he had ever known she existed.
He crossed the space between them before he’d consciously decided to move.
The remaining chains rattled violently as he reached her, closing both hands around the cold iron.
*Crack.*
They shattered beneath his fingers, one link after another, falling away in broken pieces that rang softly against the stone. Her knees buckled the moment the last of them hit the ground, and Theon caught her before she could fall, one arm sliding beneath her shoulders.
"Easy," he murmured, holding her upright against him.
She was cold. Far colder than a person had any right to be, as though the years of captivity had settled permanently into her skin.
"It’s over," he said, and his own voice sounded strange to him, quieter and steadier than he felt. "You’re safe now."
He reached back without looking, tucking NIVARETH into his storage ring with a practiced motion, and carried the woman down from the shattered ledge. When his boots finally touched solid ground, he lowered her carefully, one hand still cradling the back of her head.
Her eyes fought to stay open, fixed on his face as though she were afraid he might vanish the moment she looked away. "Theon..."
"Close your eyes."
She looked at him, confused, almost pleading. "You need to rest," he told her, his voice softening further. "You’ve been trapped here long enough. Rest."
Her eyes slipped shut. Theon stayed kneeling there, staring down at her still face, and something in his chest ached in a way he couldn’t begin to explain.
"I’m sorry," he whispered.
Her eyes opened again, just barely, two thin slivers of light in the dark.
"I’m sorry it took this long to reach you." The words didn’t sound entirely like his own as they left his mouth. Something older moved beneath them, some other voice layered just beneath his, and for a moment he almost didn’t recognize himself speaking.
She lifted a trembling hand and pressed it to his cheek. Her fingers were like ice against his skin, but he didn’t pull away, didn’t even flinch.
"It’s all right," she breathed. A faint smile touched her lips, fragile as frost on glass. "You came back as promised."
Her hand slid from his face as her eyes closed for the last time, her body going slack and still in his arms. Theon caught her falling hand before it could hit the ground, holding it a moment longer than he needed to.
For a long moment he simply knelt there, staring at her, at the stranger who somehow felt like the oldest thing he knew.
Then the cave roared.
A violent tremor tore through the stone around them, so sudden that dust rained from the ceiling before Theon even understood what was happening. His head snapped up as cracks spread across the rock above, branching and splitting, faster with every passing second. The barrier that had held the cave together, the one thing keeping thousands of tons of stone from collapsing inward, had been tied to him from the start. Now that his consciousness was slipping, it was collapsing with him, and the whole mountain seemed to know it.
Stone began raining down in earnest, chunks the size of fists and then the size of boulders, crashing into the ice and sending up sprays of frozen shrapnel.
"Theon!"
Ifrith’s voice cut through the rumble like a blade. Theon tried to turn toward it, tried to force his legs to hold, but his vision blurred at the edges and his knees gave out beneath him without warning. The last thing he saw before the darkness swallowed him whole was a burst of deep blue light erupting from somewhere far beneath the ground, pulsing once like a heartbeat before everything went black.
---
"Theon!"
Ifrith reached him at a dead sprint, catching his master’s limp body a heartbeat before another slab of stone crashed down onto the exact spot where he’d been standing. The impact sent a shockwave of dust rolling across the cavern floor. Fen was already moving toward the woman, bending his head beside her and lifting her up using his teeth and with a calmness that seemed almost out of place given the chaos crashing down around them.
"Move!" Ifrith’s voice thundered through the collapsing cavern, raw with urgency.
They ran. Leon seized Lyra’s hand and pulled her along, half dragging her toward the exit as debris rained down on either side of them. Lazaria stayed close at his back, and Eiralyth kept pace beside them all, glancing upward every few strides as the ceiling groaned and split further overhead. Boulders the size of carriages slammed into the ground, one after another, close enough that the impacts shook the breath from their lungs.
"Faster!" Leon shouted, his voice cracking.
"I’m going as fast as I can!" Fen snapped back, Lyra clinging to leon shoulders now, her small fingers dug into his collar as he ran with Theon’s weight thrown across his back and the woman held tight against his chest.
A boulder crashed down just behind them, close enough that everyone flinched in unison, and then the entrance was ahead, a ragged mouth of daylight cut into the collapsing dark. Ifrith didn’t slow even as they burst through it into open air. He raised a hand and activated the ability he’d only recently claimed for himself. Stealth Mode. A veil of magic swept over the entire group at once, and their presence simply vanished from the world around them, as though they had never been there at all.
They walked out past instructors standing frozen near the courtyard, past students crowding together and staring up at the section of the academy still crumbling behind them in great slow falling sheets of stone.
"What happened?"
"Was that an earthquake?"
"Where did that explosion come from?"
Nobody so much as glanced their way. Not one head turned. It was as if the group had become nothing more than air moving between the crowd.
Lyra’s eyes darted from face to face, wide and searching. "Why can’t anyone see us?"
"Don’t worry about that, my lady," Ifrith said, not slowing his pace for a moment.
"But..."
"We’ll explain everything later."
Lyra’s mouth pressed into a thin, unhappy line. She clearly didn’t like that answer, not one bit, but something in the set of Ifrith’s shoulders told her this wasn’t the moment to push, so she swallowed her questions and kept her head down.
---
They reached the Imperial dormitory without another word passing between them. The moment the doors shut behind the group, Ifrith laid Theon down onto his bed with careful hands, and Fen set the woman down on the second bed across the room. For a long while, nobody spoke at all. The only sound was the wind pressing faintly against the windows.
Leon stared down at his own hands. They were shaking, fine tremors he couldn’t will away no matter how hard he tried. He clenched them into fists, and somehow they only shook harder.
"What..." His voice barely carried across the room. Nobody answered. He lifted his head, and when he spoke again his tone had sharpened with something close to panic. "What actually happened back there?"
Silence.
"Ifrith."
The primordial demon looked away from him, jaw tight.
Leon’s throat worked as he swallowed hard. "What happened?"
Still nothing. His breath came faster now, shallow and quick, each inhale catching somewhere in his chest. "What happened back there? Why is everyone so quiet? Somebody say something."
Ifrith finally turned to face him fully, and there was something unfamiliar in his expression, something that looked almost like fear wearing a much older face. "This is the first time I’ve seen anything like that happen."
"Ifrith..."
"The closest thing I’ve ever witnessed wasn’t even half as powerful."
Leon’s gaze slid from Theon’s still form, to the unconscious woman across the room, to the storage ring where the ancient elf lay imprisoned, and with each pass his fear grew a little more, settling into his chest like a stone dropped into still water.
"I can’t," he said, already stepping back toward the door. "I can’t stay in here right now."
"Leon." Fen reached for him.
"I said I can’t." Leon turned and bolted for the exit. Fen pulled the door open just in time for him to disappear through it, footsteps pounding away down the hall, and then the door slammed shut behind him and quiet settled back over the room like snowfall.
Eiralyth watched the closed door for a long moment before turning to face Ifrith directly. "You already knew this would happen right?"
He said nothing, his eyes fixed on some point past her shoulder.
"You knew something was wrong from the very beginning, didn’t you?"
A smile crossed his face, faint and entirely joyless, sadness moving beneath it and something colder still underneath that. "I had a feeling." His eyes drifted back toward Theon, lingering there. "But I didn’t expect this. Not this."
---
Hours slipped by unnoticed, the light outside shifting slowly from afternoon gold to the deep blue of evening and back again.
Lyra sat beside Theon’s bed with her small hands folded neatly on top of the blanket, watching his still, unconscious face for any flicker of movement, any sign that he was still fighting his way back to her.
"Is my big brother going to be okay?"
Eiralyth settled down beside her and smoothed a gentle hand over her hair.
"He’ll be fine."
"Really?"
"Really, he’ll be fine. don’t worry. Just believe in him."
Lyra nodded slowly, as if repeating the word enough times might make it true through sheer will alone. "My big brother is strong." A small, uncertain smile flickered across her face and faded just as quickly. "So I believe he’ll be fine."
By the window, Ifrith stood with his arms crossed, watching the clouds drift past the distant mountains in long, unhurried ribbons. After a long while he let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for hours, and something in his shoulders loosened, if only slightly.
Three days passed in much the same way, quiet and heavy, the whole dormitory holding its breath.
--- {Note; this putuation mark [---] is to show when the scene has changed}
Morning light spilled through the tall windows of the Imperial dormitory, gold and warm, pooling across the floor in long, slanting bars. The dormitory sat high above the clouds, ringed by distant mountain peaks that broke through the white sea below like the backs of sleeping giants. Birds wheeled between them in lazy circles, their calls faint and far away. The whole scene looked utterly untouched by the chaos that had torn through the academy three day’s ago, as if the mountain itself had already forgotten.
Theon’s eyes opened slowly. His vision swam, edges blurred and doubled, and he lay still for several long seconds, staring at the ceiling before he tried to push himself upright.
Pain tore through him like fire poured straight into his bones.
"AAAGH!"
He collapsed back against the mattress, chest burning, ribs screaming with every shallow breath, every joint in his back feeling as though it had been shattered and reassembled slightly wrong. His arms hurt. His legs hurt. Even breathing sent fresh pain lancing through his chest.
"What the hell..."
The scream brought everyone running at once. The door slammed open hard enough to bounce off the wall, and Lyra rushed in first, her small feet skidding on the floor.
"Big brother!"
Ifrith dropped down from the windowsill in a blur, his massive demonic form folding back into his human shape midair, landing without a sound.
"Master!"
Lazaria came in right behind him, breathless. "Theon!"
Ifrith reached the bedside first, kneeling beside him. "Master, are you all right?"
Theon gritted his teeth against the pain, forcing his voice level. "I’m fine."
"You were screaming."
"I said I’m fine."
Lyra’s eyes were wet, her small hands hovering uselessly over the blanket as though she wanted to help but didn’t know how. "Big brother, does it hurt?"
"A little."
"A little?"
He looked at her, at the doubt written plainly across her face, and sighed. "Okay. A lot."
Her face crumpled at that admission, and Ifrith crossed his arms, watching Theon with careful, searching eyes. "Master, do you remember what happened?"
Theon frowned, working through the fog still clinging to his thoughts. "What happened?"
"You don’t remember."
"No."
Something shifted in Ifrith’s expression, a flicker of alarm quickly smoothed over. "You truly don’t remember any of it?"
Theon shook his head slowly, wincing at even that small movement. "I remember fighting the headmaster ( DEAN)." He paused, reaching further, searching for anything beyond that single memory, and found nothing but empty space where the rest should have been. "After that, there’s nothing. Ifrith, what happened?"
The demon didn’t answer right away.
"Ifrith."
The silence in the room stretched painfully thin, thick enough to feel, and then it broke all at once, agony exploding behind Theon’s eyes without any warning at all.
"Agh!"
He grabbed his head as the images came, fast and disjointed, tearing through him one after another. The cave. The ancient elf, blade raised, eyes burning with cold fury. NIVARETH gleaming in his grip. The frozen battlefield stretching out beneath a sky that wasn’t really a sky. His own voice, except it hadn’t sounded like his own at all, deeper and older and wrong in a way he couldn’t articulate. A name that wasn’t his surfacing from somewhere far beneath conscious thought: Cryovathar. The memories kept coming, faster now, refusing to slow no matter how hard he tried to brace against them. The elf’s attack tearing toward him. His body moving on its own, answering to something that wasn’t him, that had never asked his permission. The primordial domain unfolding around him like a second skin. The clones splitting off from his own shadow. The sword singing through the air. The chains falling away from her wrists, one by one. Her face, pale and exhausted and somehow familiar. Her voice, soft as falling snow.
*You’re finally back for me, my love.*
Theon gasped aloud, and tears he hadn’t given himself permission to shed gathered at the corners of his eyes before spilling over. His hands shook as he stared down at them, as though they might not be entirely his own anymore.
"What happened to me?"
Ifrith met his gaze steadily, unflinching, and Theon slowly lifted his head until their eyes locked across the room. He didn’t need Ifrith to say a single word. The answer was already written plainly across his face.
"You knew," Theon said quietly, the words coming out rougher than he meant them to.
"Yes, Master."
His fists clenched hard against the blanket, knuckles pale. "Then tell me. Tell me everything."
Ifrith’s expression turned grave, all traces of his usual composure falling away.
"You were possessed."
The words landed harder than any blow he’d taken in that cave, harder than the fall from the ledge, harder than anything the ancient elf had thrown at him.
"Possessed?"
"Yes."
No one spoke after that. The silence stretched out, heavy and unbroken, filling every corner of the room. Theon looked down at his own hands again, turning them over slowly as though searching for some proof, some mark, and in that moment he’d woken, real fear crept into his eyes and settled there to stay. Something had been inside him. Something ancient, patient, and powerful enough to take his body for its own without his ever knowing.
And he had no idea how long it had been there, or whether it was truly gone at all.
