Chapter 48: Chapter 48: The Academy Secret

The next morning began like any other.

Which was exactly why it felt wrong.

Theon walked through the floating corridors of the academy with Lyra, Lazeria, and Ifrith, listening to the distant noise of students heading to class. After everything that had happened in the last few days, the ordinary atmosphere felt almost suspicious, like the calm before someone pulled a curtain back.

Lyra was carrying three pastries. "Don’t ask where I got them."

"You stole them again," Theon said.

"I borrowed them permanently."

Lazeria laughed softly, the sound easy and unguarded.

Ifrith flicked his tail. "Your sister is becoming a criminal."

"I’m becoming efficient."

They entered the Upper Class building, and for once the classroom did not fall completely silent. Students still looked at Theon, but the shock had begun to wear off. Whispers remained. Curiosity remained. But the atmosphere was no longer as suffocating as it had been that first day.

Leon gave him a calm look as he walked passed.

The mysterious crimson eyed girl glanced at Ifrith briefly, then looked away without her usual lingering.

Noel Embercrest arrived a few minutes later with the same calm expression as always. He did not approach Theon this time. He simply took his seat, silver eyes forward, as though the conversation from before had already been settled in his mind.

The instructor entered, a middle aged woman with short silver hair and a stack of books floating quietly behind her.

"Today’s lesson," she announced, "is advanced mana control during combat."

Groans spread through the room.

Lyra immediately rested her chin on the desk. "This sounds dangerous."

"It’s a theory class," Theon whispered.

"That’s even worse."

The lesson continued for nearly twenty minutes. The instructor drew magic diagrams in the air, explaining how experienced swordsmen reduced energy loss during movement. Theon listened carefully. Unlike many nobles, he actually enjoyed understanding how things worked in this world, the quiet satisfaction of a mechanism finally making sense.

Then it happened.

A pressure rose from beneath the academy.

Not around them. Not above them.

Beneath them.

Theon’s breath caught in his throat. His head snapped upward on instinct. A cold wave slammed into his chest, hard enough to steal the air from his lungs.

The classroom did not react. Students continued writing. The instructor kept speaking, calm and unbothered.

They couldn’t feel it. But Only Theon could.

No. Not only him.

Ifrith suddenly stood on the desk, fur bristling from tail to ears. His crimson eyes went wide. Even a primordial demon looked shaken, and that alone told Theon this was not something small.

The pressure grew stronger. Ancient. Endless. Like a frozen ocean stirring awake somewhere deep in the dark.

Theon gripped the edge of his desk, knuckles whitening. His vision blurred at the corners. A deep ringing filled his ears, drowning out the instructor’s voice.

She finally noticed him. "Prince Theon."

He did not answer, could not answer, his throat too tight to form the words.

The pressure crashed down again, and this time it was enough to force Ifrith backward across the desk with a startled hiss.

Lyra looked at him in alarm, her voice cracking with worry. "Big Brother?"

Lazeria grabbed his arm, while her fingers tremble against his sleeve. "What’s wrong?"

The rest of the class still felt nothing at all. To them, Theon probably just looked distracted, maybe unwell.

The instructor frowned and flicked a marker toward him, a small test to pull his attention back.

Theon raised two fingers without even looking. The marker stopped between them, hovering in place.

The classroom finally went silent, all eyes turning toward him.

The instructor blinked, caught off guard.

Theon stood abruptly, chair scraping loud against the floor. "I’m sorry," he said, breathing harder than before. "But I need to go."

Without waiting for permission, he turned and headed for the door. Lyra followed immediately, her pastries forgotten on the desk. Lazeria hurried after her. Ifrith leaped onto Theon’s shoulder, claws digging in tighter than usual.

Behind them, the entire class stared in confusion.

Noel’s silver eyes narrowed, tracking Theon’s exit with quiet focus.

The mysterious girl was already on her feet before the door had even closed.

The moment they entered the corridor, the pressure became overwhelming. Theon staggered, catching himself against the wall. His head felt as though invisible hammers were striking it from somewhere deep within his skull.

The Eternal Frostblade began vibrating violently inside his storage ring.

"Master!" Ifrith shouted, voice sharp with real fear now.

"I’m fine," Theon lied, breath ragged.

He was not fine. The pressure was pulling him downward, toward something buried far beneath the academy, something patient and enormous.

A pulse echoed through the mountain.

Boom.

The floor trembled beneath their feet. Students in nearby corridors looked around in confusion, finally sensing the vibration even if the true pressure behind it stayed hidden from them.

Theon pressed a hand flat against the wall to steady himself.

Then the vision struck.

Endless ice stretching in every direction. Giant chains stretching across a frozen abyss so deep it seemed to swallow light itself. A colossal gate buried beneath snow and darkness, ancient beyond anything he had ever imagined.

And behind that gate, something moved.

Not clearly. Not completely.

But it moved.

Theon’s blood turned cold, colder than the vision itself. The pressure vanished all at once, and he stumbled forward, catching himself just before his knees gave out.

The corridor became silent.

Lyra stared at him, eyes wide with fear she was trying so hard to hide. "Brother, your eyes."

Theon blinked, and slowly the world returned to normal around him.

But somewhere deep beneath the Imperial Academy, something had opened its eyes for the first time in a very long while.

Theon then took a slow breath. The pressure was gone.

But the feeling remained, like a mark burned into his mind that no amount of blinking could erase.

Lyra held his arm tightly, refusing to let go. "What happened?"

Theon looked toward the floor beneath them, still half expecting it to tremble again. "I saw something."

Lazeria swallowed nervously. "What kind of something?"

Before he could answer, the entire academy trembled. A deep rumble echoed through the mountain, low and vast. Students cried out in surprise. Mana lamps flickered overhead. The floating bridges outside swayed slightly, groaning faintly under some unseen weight.

Then, just as suddenly, everything became still again.

Theon’s storage ring gave one final violent pulse, and the Eternal Frostblade fell silent, as though it too had been holding its breath.

Ifrith stared downward with narrowed eyes, tail flicking sharply. "That wasn’t a normal disturbance."

Theon nodded slowly. "It felt ancient."

Lyra looked around uneasily, pressing closer to his side. "Should we leave?"

"No," Ifrith said quietly. "If we run now, we’ll only attract more attention."

Too late.

Footsteps echoed through the corridor from every direction. Instructors were already arriving, robes snapping behind them. Students gathered at the intersections, whispering in confusion, most of them looking frightened without fully understanding why.

The silver haired instructor from class appeared first, her eyes moving from the trembling students to Theon with sharp precision.

"Prince Theon," she said, voice cutting through the noise, "what exactly happened here?"

Theon hesitated. How was he supposed to explain that he had seen a frozen gate beneath the academy, and something moving behind it that should not have been able to move at all?

"I felt a pressure," he answered carefully, choosing each word.

The instructor frowned. "A pressure?"

"Yes."

She looked unconvinced, her eyes narrowing further, but before she could question him more, a new presence descended over the corridor.

Heavy. Vast. Commanding, in a way that made the air itself feel thinner.

Every instructor straightened immediately. The students fell silent all at once.

Blue light gathered above the corridor, and slowly a figure descended from the air. An old man in long silver robes. White hair flowed behind him like snow caught in a wind no one else could feel. His eyes were a deep, piercing blue, sharp enough to cut through pretense.

The Headmaster.

The atmosphere changed the moment he arrived. Even the air seemed to freeze around them. The instructors bowed low. The students lowered their heads instinctively, as though their bodies understood before their minds did.

Theon remained standing.

The headmaster’s gaze swept across the corridor, then stopped on him. Not on Lyra. Not on Ifrith.

On Theon alone.

For several seconds, neither spoke. The old man studied him with an intensity that made Theon feel as though every secret in his body was being carefully examined and laid open under quiet, patient light.

Then the headmaster spoke. "Just what are you, boy?"

The corridor went completely silent.

Theon blinked, caught off guard by the bluntness of it. "I’m not sure how to answer that."

A few students looked horrified that he had responded so casually to the headmaster himself. But the old man did not seem offended. If anything, his eyes grew sharper, more interested.

"You were not supposed to be able to feel this no one was," he said.

Theon’s heartbeat quickened. "So there really was something."

The headmaster’s expression did not change. "That is not information meant for students."

"But I felt it."

"Yes." The single word carried unusual weight, heavier than it had any right to be.

Lyra stepped slightly closer to Theon, her small hand finding his sleeve again. Lazeria did the same on his other side. Ifrith watched the headmaster without blinking, ears flat against his skull.

The old man’s gaze briefly shifted to the black cat, and for a little moment surprise flickered across his weathered face. Not because of Ifrith’s presence alone, but because of something he seemed to recognize in him, something that made his composure waver for just a moment.

Then his attention returned fully to Theon. "What did you see?"

Theon hesitated. If he told the truth, would anyone believe him? Endless ice. Giant chains. A frozen gate. Something moving behind it that had no right to move at all.

The headmaster waited, patient as stone.

Theon finally answered. "I saw a gate."

The old man’s eyes narrowed sharply. "What kind of gate?"

"A frozen one."

Silence. The instructors exchanged confused glances, uncertain what any of this meant.

The headmaster did not share their confusion. His expression only grew colder. "And?"

Theon swallowed hard. "There was something behind it."

The headmaster’s composure cracked, only slightly, but Theon saw it clearly. A flicker of genuine disturbance passed behind those piercing eyes.

The old man looked away toward the depths of the academy, as if listening to something far below that only he could hear.

Then he spoke quietly, almost to himself. "Impossible."

Theon’s pulse quickened at the word. "What is beneath this academy?"

The headmaster looked back at him, and for a moment Theon thought he might actually answer, that the truth was finally about to surface.

Instead, the old man raised a hand. Blue runes spread across the corridor walls, spreading like frost across glass. The remaining traces of the ancient pressure vanished completely, wiped away as though they had never existed.

The academy became still once more.

Then the headmaster turned away. "This incident is over," he said, his voice final.

The instructors immediately bowed. The students began dispersing, though their whispers returned almost at once, hushed and urgent.

Theon stared at the old man’s back, refusing to let it end there. "Headmaster."

The silver haired figure paused mid step.

Theon’s voice was quiet but firm, steadier than he felt. "If it’s dangerous, I deserve to know."

A long silence followed, stretching thin between them.

Then the headmaster spoke without turning around. "That is exactly what worries me."

He rose into the air, blue light swallowing his figure whole. A heartbeat later, he was gone, leaving nothing behind but the faint hum of fading mana.

The corridor remained frozen in silence.

Theon looked down at his storage ring. The Eternal Frostblade was completely still now, quiet in a way that felt almost deliberate.

But deep beneath the Imperial Academy, beyond stone, ice, and ancient seals older than the empire itself, something had awakened for the first time in countless centuries.

And for the Once since its imprisonment, it had awakened in response to it’s second half
