Reborn as The Seventh Prince of Eternal Winter
Chapter 41: Within the Ancient Barrier
Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Within the Ancient Barrier
The pale blue barrier shimmered before them like a frozen ocean standing upright.
Vast. Silent. Impossibly old.
The surviving imperial knights slowed their horses as they approached the wall of ancient mana.
Snow touched its surface and dissolved into small particles of light, drifting away like scattered stars.
Theon stared at it in silence, still catching his breath from the fight only moments behind them.
His hands had not fully stopped trembling yet, though he doubted anyone else could tell.
This was the protection that had forced even elite assassins to retreat without a fight.
He almost could not believe it. An entire squad of trained killers had simply turned and walked away from a wall of light.
A low hum filled the air.
The barrier recognized the imperial escort, and ripples spread slowly across its surface before a passage opened.
The carriage rolled forward.
The moment they crossed the barrier, Theon felt it immediately.
The cold changed.
Outside, the northern mountains had been harsh and biting, cutting straight through cloth and skin. Inside, the air turned cool but gentle, carrying a strange warmth hidden just beneath the frost.
The exhaustion from the journey eased slightly, as if the academy itself was quietly washing the fatigue from his body.
Lyra blinked, sitting up straighter.
"Did you feel that?"
Lazeria nodded slowly. "The mana here is different. Softer, somehow."
Ifrith, still curled in his small black cat form, and narrowed his dark-crimson eyes.
"The barrier is absorbing hostile mana as it passes through."
Theon glanced at him. "So that’s why the assassins stopped."
"Exactly," Ifrit said. "Anyone carrying strong killing intent would be noticed the instant they crossed it."
The carriage continued forward, and then the academy revealed itself.
Theon forgot to breathe.
A mountain of ice rose before them, its peak vanishing into silver clouds.
Built into that mountain was an entire city.
Tower after tower of crystal and white stone stretched across the cliffs, connected by floating bridges glowing with pale blue runes.
Rivers of water flowed upward through the air, spiraling gently around the central district as though gravity itself had agreed to look the other way.
Giant rings of mana rotated slowly around the tallest tower, each one larger than a palace.
Thousands of glowing symbols drifted through the sky like stars that had forgotten how to fall.
Dragon statues were carved into the mountain walls, their stone eyes still burning faintly with ancient light.
Far above, students soared across the sky on floating platforms of ice, wind, and light.
Deep bells echoed through the clouds, their sound vast and old and full of quiet power.
Lyra pressed both hands against the carriage window. "It’s beautiful."
Lazeria’s eyes went wide beneath her hood. "This is a school?"
Ifrith stared upward for a long moment, and even he looked faintly surprised.
" they really preserved it well."
Theon stepped out once the carriage finally stopped.
The ground beneath his feet was smooth white stone, pulsing faintly with mana.
He turned slowly, taking in the floating bridges, the rivers of light, the endless reach of the towers.
The palace had always felt enormous to him.
But
This place felt impossible.
It was not a comfortable feeling.
Back at the palace, he had grown used to being the exception, the anomaly everyone whispered about.
Here, standing beneath towers that scraped the clouds, he felt like a single snowflake among an endless storm.
A woman in silver academy robes approached, appearing to be in her late twenties, with long ash blonde hair and calm gray eyes.
Two instructors followed a step behind her.
She bowed politely. "Welcome to the Imperial Academy, Your Highness."
Theon returned the gesture. "Thank you for receiving us."
"My name is Instructor Selene," she said. "I have been assigned to guide the three of you through your arrival procedures."
Her gaze passed briefly over Lyra and Lazeria before settling on Ifrith.
The black cat yawned dramatically, entirely unbothered.
Selene blinked once, then chose not to ask.
As they walked along the main avenue, students moved around them in every direction.
Some wore noble crests stitched into their robes. Others carried swords, staffs, or strange instruments humming with quiet magic.
The atmosphere here was nothing like the palace.
It felt alive. Dangerously alive.
Selene spoke as they walked. "The academy is divided into several major divisions. Combat, magic, strategy, research, and special studies."
Lyra looked around, eyes bright. "So everyone studies together?"
"Nobles, royals, common talents, and foreign exchange students," Selene replied. "Once you step onto these grounds, you are simply students."
Theon glanced at her. "Does rank matter here at all?"
Selene offered a faint smile. "Outside these walls, rank decides how people bow to you."
She looked toward the towering central district. "Inside these walls, ability decides how long they keep bowing."
Theon’s eyes sharpened slightly.
That was not a school motto. That was a warning dressed in polite words.
As they entered the main plaza, conversations began to fade.
One by one, students turned to look.
Whispers spread quietly through the crowd.
"Is that not the Seventh Prince?"
"The one who was said to have defeated Princess Astrid?"
"He survived a recent attack from one of the greatest western assassins."
Theon felt dozens of eyes settle on him at once.
Some held admiration. Some held simple curiosity. Some held fear. And a few, unmistakably, held hostility.
A group of noble students stepped aside as he passed.
Another group stared openly, making no effort to hide it.
Theon kept walking, but he could feel the weight of his own reputation gathering around him like snow before a storm, heavier with every step.
He had not even attended a single class yet, and already the academy had formed an opinion of him.
Somewhere beneath the whispers, he felt a familiar tightness build in his chest, the same one he used to feel walking through the palace halls as a child nobody wanted to look at directly.
Lyra moved a little closer to his side, close enough that her shoulder brushed his.
"You’re popular already."
Theon sighed quietly, grateful for her presence even if he did not say it aloud.
"This doesn’t feel like popularity."
"It feels like trouble," Ifrith corrected, tail flicking once.
And somewhere ahead, hidden among the countless students of the Imperial Academy, trouble and challenges were already waiting for him.
The crowd slowly parted as they continued through the plaza, whispers trailing behind them like wind through dry leaves.
Some students stared openly. Others pretended not to look while clearly listening to every word around them.
Theon kept his expression calm, but he could feel the academy studying him closely.
Not as a prince. As a threat that had just walked through the gate.
They passed a wide training ground where dozens of students practiced swordsmanship, steel clashing sharply through the cold air.
Among them, one figure stood out immediately.
A young man with silver hair moved through the field with effortless precision.
No wasted movement. No unnecessary strength.
Every strike landed clean and controlled, almost gentle in its accuracy.
Theon slowed slightly without meaning to, something in his chest stirring in quiet recognition.
He knew real skill when he saw it, and this was real skill, the kind built from thousands of repeated hours rather than raw talent alone.
The swordsman stopped mid swing and looked directly at him.
Their eyes met for a brief moment, and there was no hostility in his gaze at all. Only quiet interest.
Then he returned to his practice as though nothing had happened.
Lyra whispered, "That one feels dangerous."
Ifrith’s tail flicked again. "He is."
A loud snort broke the moment from the opposite side of the plaza.
A broad shouldered boy wearing the crest of a major noble house crossed his arms and looked Theon over.
" So you are the famous Seventh Prince." He tilted his head. "Smaller than the rumors made you sound."
Several students around him laughed nervously, clearly unsure whether to join in.
Theon glanced at him once, said nothing, and kept walking.
He had faced knives aimed at his throat only hours ago. A loud boy with a noble crest was not worth the breath it would take to answer him.
The boy’s smirk faltered instantly.
Ifrith chuckled under his breath. "Nothing wounds arrogant people quite like being ignored."
As they turned toward the central district, Theon felt a strange sensation settle over him.
Someone was watching him, but not with hostility. With curiosity.
He looked to his left.
A girl stood near a fountain, wrapped in a dark cloak, her face partly hidden.
Her eyes, however, were clearly visible, and they were not looking at him at all.
They were fixed on Ifrith.
The black cat’s ears twitched.
He slowly turned his head, and their eyes met.
For one long heartbeat, neither of them moved.
Then the girl smiled faintly.
It was not a mocking smile, and it was not a friendly one either. It was a knowing smile, the kind that said she understood something she had no business understanding.
She turned and disappeared into the crowd without another word.
Ifrith stayed silent.
Theon raised an eyebrow. "Do you know her?"
"No."
"But she seems to know what you are."
Theon’s expression sharpened.
That was not something an ordinary student should have been able to notice, not at a single glance.
A quiet unease settled over him, in the sense that this academy held far more secrets than towers and glowing rivers.
After leaving the crowded plaza behind, they entered a quieter district lined with silver trees and lamps carved from crystal.
Theon looked around. "Where will we be staying?"
Instructor Selene answered without slowing her pace. "In a special residence."
Theon pointed toward a large complex in the distance, where several royal banners hung still in the cold air.
"That must be at the royal dormitory."
Selene glanced at it, then back at him. "That place is not for you."
Theon blinked. "What do you mean?"
Lyra looked equally confused. "Then where are we staying?"
Selene’s expression stayed calm and unreadable. "The Imperial Dormitory."
Theon stopped walking. "There’s an Imperial Dormitory separate from that one?"
A small, knowing smile touched Selene’s face. "When we arrive, Your Highness, you will understand."
That answer only deepened his curiosity rather than easing it.
Far from the central district, another carriage passed quietly through the academy barrier.
Unlike Theon’s arrival, almost no one paid it any attention.
The door opened, and a boy stepped onto the white stone road.
Black hair streaked with crimson. Red eyes, calm and sharp.
An expression that felt colder than the snow settling around his shoulders.
The Embercrest Heir.
An instructor approached him at once, accompanied by two older students.
Both were unusually tall, their crimson eyes glowing faintly beneath their hoods.
The moment they saw him, they bowed low.
He looked at them without any visible emotion. "Is he here?"
One of the students answered immediately. "Yes. The Seventh Prince arrived moments ago."
For a brief moment, the boy smiled.
Slowly. Coldly.
"It’s about time."
The wind carried his words away as the three figures disappeared into the academy grounds.
A deep bell suddenly rang out across the entire academy, the sound rolling through the mountains, across the floating bridges, and between the crystal towers.
Every student stopped in place. Conversations died instantly. Even the rivers of light seemed to pause, as if listening.
An ancient voice echoed through the sky.
"All first year students, report to the Hall of Resonance."
Theon looked up, startled by how old the voice felt, older than the mountain itself.
Instructor Selene turned to him. "Your placement examination begins in one hour."
Lyra straightened, suddenly excited.
Lazeria swallowed hard, nerves flickering across her face.
Ifrith narrowed his eyes, alert once more.
The group began walking toward the central district.
Then Theon stopped in place.
A strange pulse spread through his chest, sudden and sharp.
Ifrith froze at the very same moment.
Both of them slowly looked upward.
Far above the academy, piercing straight through the clouds, stood the tallest building of all.
The rotating rings of mana circled around it like moons orbiting a Fros star.
Theon’s storage ring suddenly vibrated against his skin.
His eyes widened.
The Eternal Frostblade was shaking violently inside its sealed space, straining to force its way free.
Cold mana leaked through the ring, curling faintly into the air.
Theon pressed his hand against it at once and forced the blade back into stillness.
The vibration weakened, but it did not vanish completely.
Ifrith stared at the distant tower without blinking.
Theon looked at him, and no words passed between them.
They had both felt the same thing.
Something inside that tower was calling to the sword.
Theon narrowed his eyes slowly as the clouds drifted around the far off peak, a question forming quietly in his mind.
Whatever awaits him up there, it had noticed him the moment he stepped past the barrier,
"What could that be? He asked the empty air but no response came.
