Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Raven’s Confrontation

Night had swallowed the imperial palace whole.

The storm that gathered all evening now ruled the sky without mercy. Snow lashed against the windows, and thunder rolled over the capital like the growl of something ancient stirring in its sleep.

Inside Theon’s chamber, only a few candles still burned, their blue white flames trembling in the cold as if they too felt the weight of what was coming.

Theon stood by the table, fastening his dark cloak. The Azure Frostheart rested in his palm, glowing faintly beneath the fabric, its pulse steady and cold, as if it had been waiting for this night his entire life.

Lyra entered first, snow still clinging to her silver hair. She wore light armor beneath her cloak, a short blade resting at her hip, her eyes already sharp with purpose.

Lazeria followed a moment later, hood drawn low over her orange hair, her fingers curled tightly into the fabric of her sleeves.

Ifrith sat on the windowsill, watching the storm with the quiet patience of something far older than the room he sat in.

For a moment, none of them spoke. It wasn’t the silence of strangers. It was the silence of people who had already walked too far into danger to turn back now.

Theon looked at each of them in turn.

"Ready?"

Lyra nodded without hesitation.

Lazeria hesitated, then nodded too, though her eyes betrayed a flicker of fear she was trying hard to bury.

Ifrith stretched lazily. "I was born ready."

"You were born annoying."

"That too."

Theon shook his head, a faint smile tugging at his lips before it faded just as quickly. Tonight was not a game. Tonight they were walking straight into the oldest secret buried beneath the empire, and some part of him already knew there would be no walking back out unchanged.

They left through the eastern servants’ passage. Theon led the way, guiding them through narrow corridors he’d memorized during years of sneaking out of the palace as a boy who only wanted a few hours of freedom. Guards passed nearby twice, but the storm had made everyone careless.

Or maybe, a quiet voice whispered in the back of his mind, his father was still letting him walk free.

He pushed the thought away. Not now.

Outside, the wind hit them like a wall. Snow swirled through the palace gardens, blurring the towers behind them until the whole palace looked like a memory already fading. The capital below spread out in a sea of distant lanterns and white rooftops, beautiful and completely indifferent to what was about to happen in its oldest tunnels.

They moved quickly. Lyra stayed close to Theon’s side. Lazeria walked on his other side. Ifrith rode on his shoulder, crimson eyes half closed, watching everything even while pretending not to.

For several minutes, only wind and footsteps filled the night. Then Lazeria spoke, her voice soft.

"Do you really think the shard will lead us somewhere important?"

Theon glanced at her. "It already has."

"But what if it leads us into a trap?"

"If it does," Lyra cut in before he could answer, "then we spring the trap before it springs us."

Lazeria blinked, then let out a quiet laugh. "You two really are siblings."

Theon noticed the way Lyra’s expression shifted, just slightly. A small tightening around her mouth. A glance that lingered a moment too long on the space between him and Lazeria.

Ifrith noticed it too. Of course he did. His tail flicked once.

"Oh?" he said, far too innocently. "Is the princess jealous?"

Lyra nearly slipped on the snow. "What?!"

Lazeria’s eyes went wide.

Theon stared at Ifrith in disbelief.

The demon looked unbearably pleased with himself. "I merely observed that she’s been glaring at Lazeria for the last three minutes."

"I have not!"

"You absolutely have," Theon said, before he could stop himself.

Lyra turned to him with something close to betrayal in her eyes. "You’re taking his side?"

"I’m taking the side of my own eyesight."

Lazeria covered her mouth, trying and failing not to laugh. Lyra crossed her arms and looked away sharply.

"Hmph."

Ifrith leaned toward Theon and whispered, loud enough for everyone to hear anyway. "That is the sound of a royal sulk."

Lyra kicked a handful of snow at him. The cat burst into laughter, and for a few precious seconds, the tension of the night broke completely. Theon found himself smiling, genuinely this time.

Then the smile vanished.

A gust of wind brushed past him. Wrong. Not the storm. Something moving against it.

His eyes sharpened instantly. He looked at Ifrith, and the demon understood at once. No words were needed. No explanation. Just a silent conversation born from days of trust neither of them had to speak aloud.

Ifrith’s dark-crimson eyes opened fully. A ripple of dark red mana burst outward from him, spreading through the street, the rooftops, and the alleys like an invisible web cast into the dark.

The world seemed to hold its breath.

*Eight presences,* Ifrit said through their telepathic bond. *Following us from the northern rooftops.*

Theon’s expression didn’t change. *Assassins?*

*Yes. Skilled ones.*

Lyra noticed the silence stretch a beat too long. "What is it?"

Theon smiled, calm and a little dangerous. "Nothing."

Ifrith glanced at him, and Theon’s eyes gleamed faintly in the dark. *Let them come.*

The demon’s grin widened. *Now that is a prince I can respect.*

They kept walking. Behind them, the shadows kept following.

The entrance to the underground district lay hidden beneath an abandoned storage building near the oldest part of the capital. Theon pushed aside the rotting wooden door, and cold air rose up from below, ancient and dry, like the breath of something that had been holding still for a very long time.

They descended the narrow stone stairs, and the sound of the storm faded behind them until only their footsteps remained.

The Azure Frostheart pulsed stronger with every step they took.

Lazeria shivered. "It’s colder than yesterday."

"It’s reacting to something," Theon murmured.

The tunnel twisted downward for several minutes before opening into a long corridor lined with faded symbols. Blue frost coated the walls like something had frozen there and simply never thawed.

Lyra touched one of the carvings. "These weren’t made by the empire."

Ifrith nodded. "Much older."

Theon felt the shard pull harder in his hand, almost eager. They followed it deeper, until the corridor ended abruptly at a solid stone wall.

A dead end.

Theon stopped. "What?"

He frowned, looking around the empty space. "No. This should be the place."

Lyra examined the wall carefully. "There’s nothing here."

Lazeria’s shoulders fell. "Did the shard make a mistake?"

Theon looked at Ifrith. The demon narrowed his eyes, studying the wall, and then a slow smile crept across his face.

"Not a mistake." His gaze swept over the stone. "Concealment magic."

Theon blinked. "Seriously?"

"Ancient concealment magic," Ifrith corrected, sounding almost offended on its behalf. "Much more impressive."

He hopped down from Theon’s shoulder, picked up a small stone from the floor, and flicked it forward with surprising force. It struck the wall.

For a heartbeat, nothing happened.

Then the air rippled, and the illusion shattered like breaking glass. The dead end vanished, and beyond it, a vast hall emerged out of the darkness. Blue light flickered across towering pillars. Ancient frost covered the floor in patterns too perfect to be natural.

At the far end stood a colossal gate, massive and frozen, impossible in a way that made Theon’s chest ache just looking at it. At its center was a circular hollow, shaped exactly like a sphere.

The Gate of Eternal Frost.

Theon stared in silence. Even Lyra had forgotten to breathe.

Lazeria whispered, "It’s real."

The Azure Frostheart blazed in Theon’s hand as he took a slow step forward, then another, the hall so ancient it felt like it could swallow history itself.

And then, from behind them, a single clap echoed through the frozen air.

All four of them froze.

Clap. Clap. Clap.

Slow. Measured. Almost admiring.

Theon turned.

A figure stepped out of the shadows. Silver hair. A dark cloak. Eyes as cold as the frost beneath their feet.

Archduke Raven Nivaris.

Behind him, an entire squad of hooded assassins emerged, forming a silent ring around the entrance, sealing off any hope of retreat.

Raven smiled. Not warmly. Not cruelly. Like a man watching the final piece of a long, patient plan finally fall into place.

"Well done, Theon," he said softly.

The hall fell silent.

Raven’s gaze slid to the glowing shard in Theon’s hand. "You’ve been a tremendous help to me."

Theon’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

Raven spread his hands slightly, almost apologetic. "I searched for this place for years."

His smile widened. "And tonight, you led me straight to it."

Theon felt the cold sink deeper into his chest, deeper than any winter storm could reach.

The trap had never been the tunnel.

The trap had been him.

The ancient hall seemed to grow colder still.

Raven stood at the entrance with the assassins arrayed behind him, his silver hair gleaming beneath the blue light of the frozen chamber like something carved from ice itself.

Theon stepped in front of Lyra and Lazeria, slowly, deliberately. Not out of panic. Out of instinct, the kind that lived somewhere deeper than thought.

The Azure Frostheart burned in his hand. Raven’s gaze stayed fixed on it, unblinking.

"Give me the Azure Frostheart," the archduke said calmly, "and we can end this without unnecessary bloodshed."

Theon stared at him, disbelief creeping into his voice. "Why are you doing this?"

For once, Raven’s smile faded completely.

Silence filled the hall. Then he laughed, softly, and the sound echoed strangely against the frozen pillars.

"Why?" His voice carried a bitterness Theon had never heard from him before. "You’re asking me why?"

Theon’s grip tightened around the shard. "You’re my uncle."

Raven’s eyes hardened. "And I was supposed to be the emperor."

The words struck the hall like a blade dropped on stone.

Lyra’s breath caught. Lazeria looked between them, stunned.

Theon frowned. "What are you talking about?"

Raven took a slow step forward. "The throne was meant to be mine. The empire was meant to be mine." His gaze darkened, something raw surfacing beneath the calm. "Ask your father what he did five years ago."

Theon’s eyes widened. Five years ago. Something about the way Raven said those words made his chest tighten painfully.

This wasn’t political ambition.

This wasn’t ordinary resentment.

This was personal. Deeply, unbearably personal.

Before Theon could ask anything else, Raven raised a hand.

"Enough." His voice turned to ice. "Take the shard."

The assassins moved, not charging wildly but flowing, eight shadows spreading through the hall in perfect, practiced formation.

Theon’s eyes sharpened at once. Too disciplined. Too coordinated. He calculated the distances in a single heartbeat: eight assassins, an ancient hall, an unknown relic, Lyra beside him, Lazeria just behind, Ifrith on his shoulder.

He could fight. But he couldn’t promise everyone would walk out of this alive, and he desperately did not want Ifrith unleashing his full power inside a sealed underground chamber.

His mind raced, then settled. He made his choice.

A silver magic circle exploded beneath his feet.

"Fen."

Thunder answered him. A deafening roar shook the hall as lightning erupted across the floor and a massive wolf emerged from the storm, black fur streaked with silver, eyes blazing electric blue, crackling thunder wrapped around its body like chains forged from living lightning.

The evolved SSS-plus Primordial Thunder Fenrir.

The assassins stopped instantly. Several stumbled backward without meaning to. Even the ancient frost on the walls seemed to tremble.

Raven’s eyes widened, just slightly. "So that is the beast you contracted."

Fen bared his fangs, and the hall shook with his growl.

Ifrith leapt from Theon’s shoulder and landed beside the wolf. Crimson flames erupted around him as his small feline form stretched and reshaped itself into the towering figure of the primordial demon, black red armor of flame forming across his body, ancient dark-crimson eyes opening fully.

The temperature of the hall split in two: frost on one side, infernal heat on the other.

Even the assassins looked shaken now.

Theon felt a flicker of relief.

It didn’t last.

"You think I would come here," Raven said softly, "knowing you’d contracted monsters like these, without a countermeasure?"

Theon froze. The words hit him like ice water down his spine.

Of course. Everyone in the empire knew he’d contracted a demon. Raven was no fool, and certainly not a reckless one. He would never have walked into this chamber without a plan already in motion.

Theon’s eyes narrowed, searching the hall. Something was wrong. Very wrong.

The assassins weren’t attacking. They were moving slowly, precisely, forming a wide circle.

Buying time.

The realization hit him like a fist. *They’re not trying to kill us. They’re activating something.*

His head snapped upward, and his blood ran cold.

A crimson sphere floated above the center of the hall, hidden in the darkness near the ceiling until now. It glowed like a blood red moon waking from a long sleep.

Raven’s smile returned, wider this time.

Theon’s heart slammed against his ribs. "Everyone move!"

He lunged toward Ifrith and Fen.

Too late.

"Activate it!" Raven’s voice thundered through the hall.

The assassins slammed their palms onto the floor. Crimson lines exploded outward, connecting each of them to the sphere above, and a gigantic magic circle unfolded across the entire hall, ancient and forbidden.

Theon’s eyes widened as the World Archive flashed before him.

*[World Archive]*

*Ancient Magic Detected: Life Drain.*

*Classification: Forbidden.*

*Effect: Extracts vitality and mana from demonic and primordial entities.*

*Danger Level: Catastrophic.*

Theon’s face went pale. Life Drain. A forbidden spell he’d only ever seen once before, in the Tomb of Eternal Frost. A spell built specifically to break beings far stronger than any human.

Raven had planned this from the very beginning.

The crimson circle ignited.

"LIFE DRAIN!" all eight assassins shouted at once, their voices merging into something that didn’t sound quite human anymore.

The sphere above exploded with blood red light.

Ifrith staggered. Fen let out a pained roar. Their mana began tearing away from their bodies in visible streams of crimson energy, and Theon felt the pressure crush down on him even as a mere human.

Lazeria cried out and dropped to one knee, blood spilling from her lips.

Raven laughed quietly, savoring the moment with the quiet triumph of a man watching years of careful planning finally bear fruit.

"I’m sorry, nephew," he said. "But this is necessary."

Ifrith fell to one knee. Fen’s lightning flickered violently, weakening with every second.

For the first time since entering the hall, real fear reached Theon. Not for himself. For them. For Lyra. For Lazeria. For the companions who had trusted him enough to follow him into the dark.

He stepped forward, voice breaking with urgency. "Uncle, stop this!"

Raven’s eyes stayed cold. "You still don’t understand."

The crimson sphere brightened further. Lazeria coughed up more blood. Fen’s roar grew weaker still.

Theon’s fists trembled at his sides.

Then Ifrith began to laugh.

A low sound at first, broken and strained. Then stronger, until it filled the hall and silenced everything else.

Raven’s smile faltered.

Ifrith slowly rose to his feet. Crimson flames erupted around him again, but this time there was nothing playful in them, nothing arrogant. Only something ancient and utterly terrifying.

His eyes became two burning stars.

The pressure in the hall shifted instantly. The assassins froze in place. Even the Life Drain circle itself seemed to tremble.

Ifrith looked at Raven with open contempt. "Did you truly believe," he asked, voice quiet and razor sharp, "that a ritual made by humans could consume a primordial demon completely?"

Raven’s expression darkened.

Ifrith turned to Theon and, bowed his head formally in reverence. "Master."

His voice carried through the hall like a command waiting to be given. "Permission to exterminate."

Theon looked at the assassins. At Lazeria, still coughing blood behind him. At Lyra, ice already forming around her clenched hands.

Then he met Raven’s eyes.

"Do it." A pause, his voice hardening. "But leave my uncle to me."

Ifrith’s lips curved into a smile that promised nothing good for anyone standing against him.

"As you command."

He vanished. One moment he stood beside Fen. The next, he was behind an assassin, a crimson claw punching straight through the man’s chest. The assassin hit the floor before he could even scream.

Chaos broke loose. Fen roared and lightning tore through the hall. The assassins scattered in every direction, their formation collapsing, the Life Drain circle shattering apart.

Theon dropped beside Lazeria immediately, his hands hovering, unsure where to touch, terrified of making it worse. She was trembling, blood staining her lips, the spell having already stolen part of her strength.

Anger, cold and sudden, tightened in his chest.

He looked up at Raven, and something inside him shifted. Not rage exactly. Something closer to authority, something that had been sleeping until this exact moment.

He rose to his feet. Blue and crimson mana swirled around him.

"Aura Dominate."

The hall froze. An invisible pressure crashed downward, and Raven’s eyes widened as, for the first time in years, the archduke felt his knees threaten to buckle beneath him.

Theon walked toward him slowly. Each step made the pressure heavier.

Raven gritted his teeth. "What is this?"

Theon said nothing. His eyes no longer belonged only to a prince. They carried the weight of something closer to command itself, and Raven felt it settle over him like a hand closing around his throat.

He hated it.

Behind Theon, another pressure suddenly erupted. Hot. Violent. Furious.

Theon stopped mid step, eyes widening.

*No. Please, not now.*

He turned.

Lyra stood at the center of a crimson storm. Her silver hair had turned pure blood red. Her eyes burned like molten rubies. Scarlet lightning crawled across her skin, and the air around her warped under the weight of overwhelming mana.

Theon stared in horror.

"No," he whispered. "Not at this moment."

A crimson storm exploded outward, and Lyra slowly lifted her glowing red eyes to meet his.
