Reborn as The Seventh Prince of Eternal Winter
Chapter 121: Into the Abyss
Chapter 121: Chapter 121: Into the Abyss
Darkness.
Not the darkness of night, nor the kind that came when a candle was extinguished.
This darkness had no beginning and no end. It stretched endlessly in every direction, swallowing all sense of distance until the very concept of far and near lost all meaning. There was no ground beneath Theon’s feet, no sky above his head, and no wind against his skin to remind him that he still possessed a body at all.
He simply drifted.
His body moved through the endless void as though carried by a current that could not be felt, pulled along by something invisible and patient. Theon opened his eyes, or at least he thought he did, but there was nothing to see. He turned his head slowly, searching for something, anything, that might tell him where he was, but the darkness offered no answers and no comfort. The silence was almost as unsettling as the darkness itself, a suffocating absence of sound that pressed against his ears and made him wonder if he had gone deaf without realizing it.
He could not hear his own footsteps because there was nowhere to walk. He could not hear the wind because there was no none. Even the sound of his breathing seemed distant, as though it belonged to someone else entirely, someone far away who existed in a world he could no longer reach.
He continued drifting.
How long he had been there, he could not tell. Seconds, minutes, perhaps hours. Time seemed meaningless in a place like this, where nothing changed and nothing moved except the slow, aimless motion of his own body through the void.
Then a faint glow appeared in the distance.
Theon’s eyes narrowed. Green light. It was small at first, barely more than a distant spark suspended within the darkness, but as he drifted closer, the glow gradually intensified until it illuminated the space around it with a soft, ethereal radiance. Something was standing within it. A figure in female form.
Long vines covered her form, winding around her body like living ornaments that pulsed with their own quiet life. The green radiance surrounding her was soft rather than blinding, illuminating the space immediately around her without dispelling the greater darkness that pressed in from all sides.
Theon stared.
There was something familiar about her. He had seen her before, but his memories were fragmented, buried beneath the exhaustion and pain that still lingered somewhere within his consciousness like sediment at the bottom of a murky river. He drifted closer, and the woman’s features became clearer. This time there was no distortion, no haze, no veil obscuring her presence. Theon could see her distinctly, and he studied her for several moments before finally speaking.
"Who are you?"
The woman looked at him. A faint smile touched her lips.
"Didn’t you enter the forest searching for me?"
The words struck something inside him. The forest. His memories stirred, rising to the surface like bubbles in still water. The ancient forest. The strange presence he had sensed. The green figure he had glimpsed moments before he cheated death. His eyes widened slightly.
"Spirit Sovereign."
Her smile deepened.
"You guessed right."
Theon glanced around the endless void. His expression slowly became uncertain as he looked down at himself, then back at her. A thought crossed his mind, one that had been lurking in the shadows of his consciousness since the moment he had awakened in this strange place.
"Am I dead?"
The Spirit Sovereign’s expression softened.
"No."
Theon released a breath he had not realized he was holding.
"This is your un-conscious state."
He blinked.
"My un-conscious state?"
"A place within your own consciousness. Somewhere your mind can exist apart from the world around you."
Theon looked around again. The explanation did little to make the endless darkness feel less strange.
"So I’m still alive?"
"For now."
Theon frowned.
"For now?"
The Spirit Sovereign’s expression remained calm.
"Do not concern yourself with death. Your time has not come."
She paused.
"You still have much to accomplish."
Theon remained silent. There was something about the way she said it that made the words feel heavier than they should have, weighted with meaning he could not yet understand. He didn’t know what she meant, and judging by her expression, she had no intention of explaining it. So instead, his thoughts turned elsewhere.
"The others."
The Spirit Sovereign looked at him.
"What about them?"
"The one’s who were with me."
His voice carried a quiet urgency.
"Did they survive?"
"They are safe."
Theon’s shoulders loosened slightly.
"They’re all alive?"
A faint smile appeared on Theon face after hearing that.
"Am glad they’re fine."
For a moment, the darkness seemed less oppressive. Then another thought surfaced, one that had been gnawing at the edges of his mind since he had first awakened in this place.
"My lost years."
The Spirit Sovereign’s gaze remained fixed upon him. Theon waited.
"Do you know what happened to me?"
She did not answer immediately. Instead, she said quietly,
"That is not something you need to concern yourself with now."
Thion frowned.
"But—"
"Your body needs you."
Her voice remained gentle, but there was enough authority behind it to end the argument before it could truly begin.
"Recover first. There will be time for the rest."
Theon stared at her wanting to ask more as there were too many questions in his mind, and somehow he felt that she possessed answers to all of them. Yet before he could speak, the Spirit Sovereign tilted her head slightly.
"You truly are a strange one."
Theon blinked.
"What do you mean?"
A quiet amusement appeared in her eyes.
"You entered the forest searching for me."
She took a step closer.
"Yet along the way, you encountered something far beyond what you should have been capable of handling."
Theon remained silent.
Her gaze sharpened.
"And despite everything, you still stopped to help that child."
Theon lowered his eyes.
"I couldn’t just leave him to his demise."
"You could have." Said the spirit sovereign.
"I know." Then responded.
"You could have died." She continued.
Theon gave a small shrug.
"That would’ve been unfortunate."
The Spirit Sovereign stared at him then theon smiled faintly.
"I suppose that’s one of my flaws."
"What flaw is that?" Spirit solverign asked.
"I can’t seem to walk away when someone needs help."
The Spirit Sovereign’s expression changed. The amusement faded, and for a moment she simply studied him.
Then she said,
"That kindness may one day be the reason you fall."
Theon met her eyes. There was no argument in his expression. He understood the warning, understood the weight of her words, but he did not regret what he had done. A quiet smile returned to his face. The Spirit Sovereign noticed.
She sighed softly.
"Perhaps you truly cannot be changed."
Theon gave a small laugh.
"Probably not."
Silence settled between them again. Then the Spirit Sovereign raised one hand.
"When you awaken, an amulet will find you."
Theon expression changed.
"An amulet?"
But she did not elaborate. Instead, she looked beyond him, toward the endless darkness.
"It is time."
Theon frowned.
"Time for what?"
"For you to wake up."
His eyes widened.
"Wake?"
The Spirit Sovereign looked back at him.
"This place is only your conscious self within the void. Your body is elsewhere."
She extended her hand toward him.
"You have rested enough."
Theon stared at her hand.
"Wait."
He moved closer.
"There are still things I want to ask."
"I know."
"Then tell me—"
He never finished before the Spirit Sovereign’s body dissolved into green light. The radiance surged toward him, and Theon’s eyes widened as the light rushed forward. Before he could react, the Spirit Sovereign entered his body. A strange warmth spread through his chest. The darkness trembled. His body began to rise. Higher. Higher. The endless void disappeared beneath him.
And then everything went black.
Theon’s breathing was shallow. His body lay motionless upon a bed, and for several moments nothing disturbed the quiet chamber. Then a crackle broke the silence, followed by another, and his brow twitched. His fingers moved slightly. The sound came again, something scraping against the other side of the room, and Theon consciousness stirred.
Pain followed. A sharp ache pierced through his head, and his breathing became uneven. He tried to move, but his body felt heavy, far heavier than he remembered. His eyelids barely opened, and light immediately stabbed into his eyes. He closed them again, a faint groan escaping his throat. His head throbbed. His thoughts came slowly, scattered and disjointed.
Where...?
He tried to remember. The forest. The battle. The darkness. Then nothing. His throat felt dry, and he swallowed painfully. The strange crackling sound continued somewhere nearby. Theon forced his eyes open again, and the room was blurry, shapes moving within his vision. He blinked several times, and slowly the world came into focus.
A figure was standing near the balcony. Golden hair. A pair of unusual eyes. Crimson and sapphire-blue.
Theon stared. His mind struggled to make sense of what he was seeing. He lifted both hands and rubbed his eyes. Once. Twice. He looked again. The figure was still there.
His eyes shot out in shock.
"Cele....?"
