Chapter 105: Chapter 105: THE PANDORA’S CODEX ARC: Ultimate Void

They broke through the treeline like a storm given form.

Rain still hammered the forest in relentless sheets, each drop striking leaf and bark with a violence that had nothing gentle left in it. Lightning carved the sky into jagged white scars, and thunder answered each flash with a roar that shook the ground beneath their boots. The four of them, Ifrith, Lazaria, Silver, and Seraphina, landed hard among the broken roots and churned earth, boots skidding on mud and wet leaves, momentum carrying each of them a stumbling step further than they meant to go. For a single heartbeat the only sound was the storm itself, and in that heartbeat some small, foolish part of each of them still hoped they had misread the danger, that Seraphina’s warning would prove to be nothing worse than a scare.

Then their eyes found him.

Theon lay half crumpled against the dark soil, Aldric’s sword driven deep through his chest, the blade catching what little light the storm allowed and throwing it back in a dull, wet gleam. Blood had already soaked the front of his torn uniform, dark and spreading in a slow tide that mixed with the rain and ran off into the churned mud beneath him. His eyes were open but unfocused, lips parted around shallow, failing breaths that seemed to arrive further apart with every passing second. The barrier still shimmered faintly around the clearing, a translucent wall of force that kept the rest of the world at bay, sealing the four of them inside a scene none of them would ever be able to unsee.

Aldric stood over him without urgency, sword still buried to the hilt, rain running in clean lines down a face that showed no strain at all. He looked like a man pausing mid stride to admire a view, silver at his temples catching what little light broke through the clouds, his coat barely dampened by the storm as though the rain agreed to fall around him rather than on him. There was nothing in his bearing that matched the horror only paces away, and that mismatch was what finally told the four of them how much danger they had flown into.

Ifrith saw it first.

Something inside him tore open, a wound with no shape and no edges, older than the last five minutes and deeper than anything a blade could have caused. He had known Theon for a while now and had watched him grow into someone worth following, worth dying for if it ever came to that. It had never once occurred to him that the reverse might happen first.

The easy arrogance that usually sat across his features vanished entirely, burned away in an instant. His pupils contracted to pinpricks. Heat, raw, uncontrolled, murderous, surged up from the core of him until the rain that struck his shoulders began to hiss into thin curls of steam, and the mud beneath his boots cracked and dried in a widening circle. Lazaria’s hand half rose toward him, a warning that never fully formed, her own face pale beneath the rain, her twin blades already drawn though there was nothing yet to cut. Silver’s jaw locked, a muscle working once at her temple, the only visible crack in a composure that had held through worse than this. Seraphina’s face had gone bloodless, her gaze locked on Theon’s still form as though she could will the wound closed by sheer force of will alone, her hands trembling at her sides in a way none of them had ever seen before.

Ifrith stepped forward, and the ground itself seemed to lean away from him.

The air around him warped, bending the rain into strange, sideways patterns as it fell. Shadows that had nothing to do with the storm began to gather at his feet, thick and hungry, pooling like something alive and starving. His voice, when it came, was barely human, low, cracked, and burning with a fury that had no bottom, no edge, nothing left in it that resembled the man who had teased Lazaria over her whetstone only an hour before.

"You."

He did not finish the sentence. No words large enough to carry what he felt. His arm snapped upward, fingers splayed, and every ounce of restraint he had ever practiced simply ceased to exist. Power, vast, ancient, and absolute, ripped free of him like a black sun being born, tearing through the rain and a dark frightening way.

"Ultimate Void!"

The sky answered.

A sphere of pure void tore itself into existence high above the clearing, vast enough to blot out the lightning entirely, a wrongness so total that even the storm seemed to flinch away from it. It hung there for a fraction of a second, a wound in the world itself, black and silent and utterly indifferent to the rain falling into it, then began its descent. Trees bent beneath the pressure, groaning as their trunks strained sideways. The rain itself seemed to freeze mid fall, caught for one impossible instant between the sky and the ground. The spell carried the weight of annihilation, aimed with perfect, murderous precision at the man who still stood calmly over Theon’s body, untouched by any of it.

Asmodeus raised his hand.

A shield formed above his head in a single, fluid motion, expanding outward in a vast dome of dark, unyielding force that covered the entire clearing, sealing every root, every drop of rain, every inch of ground beneath its protection. The Ultimate Void spell struck the shield with the full weight of the void, a cataclysm of pure nothingness slamming down against the barrier. The impact shook the air, yet Asmodeus held firm. His arm remained steady, palm outward, containing the monstrous power as it pressed and raged against the shield. The void howled and strained, its edges clawing at the edges of the dome, but Asmodeus did not yield. He contained it, absorbing and locking the annihilation in place, the shield never cracking, never faltering, until the spell’s fury was fully sealed within his control.

Ifrith stood frozen, arm still raised, the aftertaste of spent power burning in his throat like ash. Disbelief and rage warred across his face in equal measure, neither one strong enough to fully claim him. He had felt the spell leave him, had felt its full, catastrophic strength pouring out of every part of his being. And yet it had been held and contained with the calm certainty of a man who had never once doubted the outcome, as though a lifetime of accumulated power meant less than nothing at all.

His voice came out hoarse, almost broken, stripped of every trace of its usual arrogance.

"What exactly are you?"

Aldric’s gaze shifted to him at last, unhurried, as though there were no urgency left anywhere in the world. The older man’s expression remained composed, almost gentle, the same quiet calm he had worn since the moment he first raised his sword against the prince he had sworn to his father to protect. Then the corner of his mouth curved into a small, knowing smile, the kind that belonged to someone who had waited a very long time to be recognized.

"Do you not recognize me, Voidborn."

The word landed like a blade between the ribs, quieter than the storm and somehow louder than anything that had come before it.

Something in Ifrith cracked open at the sound of it. Something old and carefully buried stirred behind his eyes, recognition he could not place and did not want, denial rising fast on its heels, and beneath both of them a fresh, cold spike of pure hatred aimed as much at himself as at the man standing across from him. Memories he had spent centuries refusing to look at pressed suddenly against the inside of his skull, half formed and unwelcome.

The rain continued to fall. Lightning split the sky again, closer now, illuminating the clearing in one more merciless flash. Theon still lay impaled in the mud, chest barely rising, the barrier still stood between them and the world, and the man who had just contained the Dark One’s attack looked at him as though he had been expected all along, as though this entire storm had been arranged solely to bring them face to face.

The Grand Battle had only just begun.
