Chapter 1968: Chapter 1970: Lifting the Bridal Veil

Wang Kui acted like he hadn’t heard a thing. He’d finally gotten himself a wife—how could he not dote on her?

With a creak, he pushed the door open. "Wifey, I brought you something to eat. Have a little first so you don’t go hungry."

Yang Qiu was sitting there, not moving at all, just waiting for Wang Kui to come back at night. She hadn’t expected him to return so soon, and even bringing her food. Her heart warmed instantly.

Wang Kui closed the door and set the food on the table. Seeing that Yang Qiu made no sound, he walked over. "Wifey, you must be hungry. I brought you a chicken leg."

Seeing Yang Qiu with the red veil over her head, he suddenly realized that without lifting it, she pretty much couldn’t eat.

Just then, Yang Qiu spoke up. "H-husband, I can’t eat yet. I have to wait until the veil is lifted tonight."

"..."

Her words made Wang Kui’s heart ache. He thought that this veil was really getting in the way—keeping his wife from eating and making her go hungry.

He thought for a moment. He was the one who’d be lifting the veil anyway, so it didn’t really have to be at night.

So he asked, "Wifey, can I lift your veil now?"

His words made Yang Qiu’s heart tremble. She was a little nervous and a little scared, and asked, "Husband, isn’t the veil supposed to be lifted at night?"

"I’m the one lifting it anyway; whenever is fine. It doesn’t have to be at night."

Yang Qiu thought about it. That really did make sense, so she gave a slight nod. "Mm."

Wang Kui reached out and lifted the veil covering the top of Yang Qiu’s head. Her little face appeared in his line of sight bit by bit.

Yang Qiu lowered her head, her small face tinged pink, her long eyelashes trembling slightly.

Just looking at her made Wang Kui’s heart quiver. He blurted out, "Wifey, you’re really pretty."

His words made Yang Qiu’s already flushed little face turn scarlet in an instant, and a shy smile tugged at the corners of her mouth.

Wang Kui was feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. He took Yang Qiu’s hand and helped her down from the heated brick bed to the floor, keeping hold of her as he led her to the table and had her sit on the stool.

Then he pushed the dishes over in front of her. "Eat."

Wang Kui had always thought he wasn’t someone who knew how to say tender, caring things, but facing Yang Qiu, he didn’t know what came over him—he just couldn’t help wanting to say things to show he cared.

Seeing the food, Yang Qiu didn’t eat right away but asked instead, "Have you eaten?"

"I have. Hurry and eat, or it’ll be cold in a bit."

Only then did Yang Qiu nod. She’d only eaten breakfast, and it was already afternoon, so she really was quite hungry. She didn’t stand on ceremony and started eating. ℯℯ𝑙.

Wang Kui just sat there watching her eat, like he could never get enough of looking at her.

It made Yang Qiu feel very self-conscious, so she said, "Aren’t you going out? There should still be a lot of people outside to entertain."

Only then did Wang Kui remember there were still guests to take care of outside. Feeling terribly awkward, he hurried to his feet and said, "Then you eat first. I’ll go entertain them. I won’t be back until tonight."

Yang Qiu nodded and reminded him, "Mm, don’t drink too much."

"Got it. I’ll come back as soon as I can. We still have to spend our wedding night—I can’t drink too much." Saying that, Wang Kui went out.

He left Yang Qiu sitting there, her face turning scarlet again, her little heart thumping wildly.

She was terribly embarrassed. Wang Kui had actually said something like that so openly.

She was nervous, expectant, uneasy, and afraid all at once.

She quickly finished the food Wang Kui had brought, then went back to sit on the heated brick bed, carrying all those feelings as she waited for the night to come.
