Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat
Chapter 167 — Where Water Meets
Chapter 167: Chapter 167 — Where Water Meets
He woke the next morning with Yveth’s words still sitting somewhere in his chest, quieter and more persistent than he’d expected them to be — I left somewhere myself, once — and found himself turning them over while he dressed, curious in a way that had nothing to do with the dungeon at all.
He didn’t linger on it. There’d be time enough for that thread later, he suspected, and this morning belonged to something else entirely — a question that had been following him since Floor Six, patient and unresolved, waiting for exactly this kind of quiet, unhurried morning to finally be addressed properly.
He set out not toward the guild checkpoint, but toward the modest stretch of parkland near the district’s edge where a shallow, artificial stream had been diverted through a series of ornamental channels — quiet, unused this early, and considerably safer than testing anything experimental three floors beneath the surface.
No sense fusing something dangerous in a place I can’t afford to fail carefully, he’d decided, packing a simple length of clay piping alongside his usual gear. Better to understand it somewhere quiet first.
He found a secluded bend in the channel, knelt at its edge, and set the pipe down beside him — a length scavenged from a builder’s discard pile, hollow and unremarkable, but exactly the kind of simple, controlled test he wanted before trusting the fusion question to anything more demanding.
He closed his eyes and reached inward, the way he’d learned to reach for every genuine discovery now — patient, unhurried, willing to sit with uncertainty rather than force an answer before it was ready to arrive.
Water Affinity answered first, quiet and foundational, the same comfortable ease in water he’d carried since a marsh eel’s fire all those years ago. Current’s Grasp rose beside it, a felt sense of gentle command over moving water. Tidecaller’s Focus followed last, deeper and more substantial than either, a genuine authority over current and flow that dwarfed what the first two had offered separately.
He held all three in his attention at once, and found, much as he had with the silk abilities, that they didn’t sit as distinctly separate the way his elemental or physical abilities did. They layered. Overlapped at the edges, one flowing naturally into the next the way a stream flows into a river.
Three, this time. Not two.
He wasn’t certain whether that changed anything about how fusion actually worked, and found himself, turning the uncertainty over carefully, deciding the only honest way to learn was to attempt it properly.
He picked up the clay pipe and set one end into the channel’s shallow current, and began, patient and deliberate, to draw all three abilities toward the same understanding he’d found with Enduring Vitality and Mireflow — not forcing them together, but searching for the plain, honest truth underlying all three.
Comfort in water. Command of water. Mastery of water’s movement. Different depths of the exact same relationship.
Nothing happened at first, the water in the channel rippling only with its own ordinary current, indifferent to his careful concentration. He adjusted his focus, tried again, and found himself, an hour into the attempt, no closer to any breakthrough than when he’d started.
He didn’t grow frustrated. He’d learned, across every previous fusion and every failed attempt at any new skill, that impatience only ever slowed the process down.
He tried a different approach instead — rather than holding the three abilities in his mind and searching for their shared truth in the abstract, he simply used them, one after another, through the pipe’s narrow channel. He drew water up through it with Water Affinity’s comfortable ease. He nudged the flow sideways with Current’s Grasp. He commanded a proper surge with Tidecaller’s Focus, watching the water rise and answer his will with genuine, satisfying authority.
There. That’s the shape of it. Not one truth. A progression. Each one building on what came before, the way a student’s skill deepens under a patient teacher.
He held that understanding carefully, turned it over, and reached inward once more — not searching for what the three abilities shared, exactly, but for the natural conclusion of the progression they represented, the point all three had clearly been reaching toward from the very beginning.
Warmth spread through his chest, familiar and patient, and this time it arrived without hesitation, as though it had simply been waiting for him to finally ask the right question.
A name surfaced, whole and certain.
Sovereign Tide.
He sat with it a long moment, breath catching, and reached inward carefully to check what remained.
Water Affinity, Current’s Grasp, and Tidecaller’s Focus were all gone, folded together into something that felt, testing its edges with careful attention, considerably more than the sum of what three separate abilities had offered. He tested it cautiously against the channel’s modest current, and found the water responding with an ease and scale that made his previous, incremental control feel almost embarrassingly small by comparison — not just command, but genuine, comfortable authority, water bending to his will the way a longtime craftsman’s tools bent to years of practiced familiarity.
Fourteen, now. Three abilities became one, and the one is worth more than all three ever were separately.
He pulled his journal from his pack and wrote a careful entry, hands steady despite the effort the fusion had cost him.
Three water abilities, folded into one — Sovereign Tide, considerably more capable than any of its three sources managed alone. Took longer to understand than the first fusion did, maybe because there were three threads to reconcile instead of two, or maybe because I was searching for the wrong kind of truth at first. A shared identity worked for Enduring Vitality and Mireflow. A shared progression worked for this one. Worth remembering — fusion might not always ask the same question twice.
He closed the journal, packed away the pipe, and made his way back toward the Foxglove with the particular, quiet satisfaction of a discovery earned through patience rather than desperation — no injury forcing this one, no pit trap, simply careful, deliberate curiosity finally rewarded, and, waiting somewhere ahead of him, a conversation he suspected wasn’t quite finished yet.
