Chapter 105: Chapter 105 — What the Ruins Reveal

The next morning arrived clear and considerably calmer than anything the previous two days had offered, the crystallized corruption fully receded now from the clearing’s ground, leaving behind ordinary earth and the exposed, weathered stonework that had lain buried beneath it for who knew how long.

Garrick remained resting under Priya’s continued care, still pale but considerably steadier than the previous evening, and Maren, her own strength largely recovered, gathered the party together once breakfast had settled properly.

"Before we begin the journey back, I’d like to document this site properly," she said. "Whatever built this — whatever the original containment actually was — deserves a thorough record, both for the Radiant Dawn’s archives and for the guild’s own understanding."

"Agreed," Ilyana said. "We’re not in any rush to move, given Garrick’s condition. Might as well use the time productively."

Arlen found himself drawn toward the exposed ruins with the same careful, methodical curiosity he’d once brought to Eldrin’s original discovery, and spent the morning working alongside Osric and Maren as they cleared away the last remnants of crystallized debris from the ancient stonework.

"This is considerably more extensive than a simple marker," Osric observed, brushing dirt away from a section of wall that continued well beyond what the clearing’s earlier appearance had suggested. "Look at the foundation lines here. This wasn’t just a warding stone. This was a structure."

Arlen knelt beside him, studying the exposed foundation with careful attention. "A building, you mean."

"Possibly. Or something more specialized." Osric traced the foundation’s outline with a careful finger. "The proportions don’t match anything I’d expect from an ordinary dwelling or temple. Too geometric. Too deliberate."

They spent the better part of the morning clearing enough of the site to reveal its actual shape — a modest, rectangular structure, its walls mostly collapsed but the foundation clearly intact, carved symbols similar to the fragment Arlen remembered from Eldrin’s original ruin repeating across several surviving sections of wall, though considerably more numerous and varied here than anything he’d seen documented before.

"These aren’t decorative," Maren said, studying one particularly intact panel of carvings with focused, scholarly attention. "This is notation. Deliberate, systematic notation, the way a scholar might record careful, structured information rather than simply decorating a wall."

"Can you read any of it?" Arlen asked.

"Not fluently. The style predates anything my order’s archives properly catalogue, though certain elements feel familiar enough that I suspect it derives from an older form of a written system we still use in modified fashion." Maren traced one of the symbols carefully. "I’ll need proper reference texts to say more. This deserves the kind of careful study your Professor Vale specializes in, from what I understand of his work."

Arlen felt a flicker of genuine excitement at that, already composing in his mind the letter he’d send Eldrin once they returned to Greyhaven — the professor would want every detail, and Arlen intended to make sure the account reached him properly, even if Arlen himself wouldn’t be the one following up on it much longer.

They continued clearing the site through the afternoon, and it was Kess, working along the structure’s northern edge, who called out with sudden, sharp interest.

"There’s something here. Metal, I think, not stone."

The party gathered around her discovery — a small, corroded fragment embedded in what remained of the structure’s foundation, clearly metallic despite centuries of apparent exposure, its surface etched with the same careful, systematic markings as the surrounding stonework.

"That shouldn’t have survived this long," Osric said, examining it with genuine surprise. "Not in this condition. Whatever alloy this is, it’s remarkably resistant to decay."

"Or something’s been protecting it," Maren said quietly. "The same corruption that spread outward from this site — perhaps it also, in some strange way, preserved certain elements of whatever originally stood here."

Arlen studied the fragment carefully, turning over the implications with the same methodical attention he gave every significant discovery. "This wasn’t simple containment work, was it. Not the kind of sealing a priest or mage might perform alone."

"No," Maren admitted. "I don’t believe it was. Whatever built this structure, whatever they were containing here — I suspect the answer is considerably more complicated than a single, ancient act of sealing something dangerous away."

Ilyana, who had been studying the site’s broader layout with a warrior’s practical attention rather than scholarly curiosity, called the party’s attention to something further out from the main structure. "There’s a second foundation here. Smaller, but clearly connected — some kind of pathway between the two, based on how the stonework aligns."

They spent the remainder of the afternoon mapping the site’s full extent, and Arlen found himself genuinely struck by the sheer scale of what gradually emerged — not a single, isolated marker, but a modest complex, deliberately constructed, clearly serving some purpose considerably more involved than simple warding.

"This will take proper archaeological work to fully understand," Osric said, as the light began fading toward evening. "More than we can manage here, with our current resources and Garrick’s condition demanding we not linger indefinitely."

"Agreed," Maren said. "I’ll document everything I reasonably can before we depart, and recommend the guild and my order both pursue a proper follow-up expedition once circumstances allow."

Arlen found himself, that evening, sharing his own careful observations with the group gathered around the camp’s fire, the accumulated discoveries of the day settling into a shape he found himself unable to fully dismiss.

"I keep thinking about Eldrin’s original ruin," he said. "The one that started all of this, over a year ago now. He found a single carved symbol there, nothing like this scale. I wonder if that site was ever properly excavated beyond what we initially uncovered."

"Worth investigating, once we’re able," Maren said. "If this site represents a more complete example of whatever the original phenomenon actually was, comparing it against Millbrook’s more limited remains might teach us considerably more than either site alone could offer."

Garrick, resting nearby but evidently following the conversation with quiet attention, spoke for the first time that evening. "I want full documentation of everything found here forwarded to both the capital archive and the Radiant Dawn’s own records. Whatever this actually was, it deserves proper, careful study, not a hurried conclusion drawn from an exhausted party eager to simply go home."

"Understood," Ilyana said.

Arlen wrote at length in his journal that night, the day’s careful discoveries settling into pages considerably fuller than his usual reflective entries.

A structure, not just a marker. Carved notation across multiple surviving walls, a preserved metal fragment that shouldn’t have survived centuries of exposure, a second foundation connected by some kind of pathway. Whatever built this site, it wasn’t simple ancient sealing work. It was deliberate, systematic, and considerably more sophisticated than anything I previously imagined.

I don’t know yet what any of it means. I only know the mystery feels considerably larger tonight than it did even yesterday morning, before we uncovered any of this. I’ll write Eldrin properly once we’re home — he deserves every detail, even if I won’t be the one still here to help him chase down the rest of it.

He closed the journal, the camp settling into its recovering, contemplative quiet around him, and found himself looking forward, despite the day’s exhaustion, to whatever further investigation the coming days might still reveal.
