Chapter 59: Chapter 59 : The Predator’s Last Stand

The creature crossed the plateau with terrifying speed.

Ash forced himself upright and ran toward the narrow passage between two ancient pillars.

He could hear the beast behind him, its enormous steps shaking the frozen ground with every movement.

The ancient stones trembled as it passed, sending small avalanches of snow from their weathered surfaces.

Ash slipped between the pillars.

The creature struck.

Both pillars collapsed.

Ash threw himself forward as stone crashed behind him. He rolled down the slope, recovered his footing, and continued running until the ground opened into another frozen basin.

Aren appeared on the opposite side.

"Ash!"

Ash turned.

The creature burst through the ruins.

Aren immediately moved toward it, but Kael intercepted him.

"Don’t!"

The beast swung toward Aren.

Moonfang attacked from behind.

Its claws struck the creature’s rear scales, drawing a thin line of blood.

The creature turned violently.

Moonfang barely escaped.

Ash watched the exchange.

Something didn’t make sense.

The creature could have chased Moonfang.

Instead, its eyes returned to Ash.

Again.

Always Ash.

It wasn’t trying to kill them unless they interfered.

Its focus remained fixed on him.

Ash’s chest tightened.

"It wants me," he said.

Kael looked toward him. "No. I think it wants to know what you are."

The relic pulsed.

Ash felt heat spreading through his chest.

The ancient beast reacted immediately.

Its head lowered.

For a moment, the two predators simply stared at one another.

Then Ash felt something awaken inside him.

Not a voice.

Not an external power.

Something older.

His breathing became slower.

The world around him sharpened.

He could hear the wind moving between the stones.

He could hear Aren’s breathing behind him.

He could hear Moonfang’s claws pressing against the ice.

Most importantly, he could hear the creature’s heartbeat.

Slow.

Massive.

Uneven.

Ash lowered his body.

The Blackfang bloodline responded.

The change wasn’t dramatic.

His body did not suddenly become enormous, and no overwhelming energy exploded around him. Instead, his senses became sharper, his movements more deliberate, and his instincts clearer than they had ever been.

He stopped thinking about defeating the creature.

He began thinking about hunting it.

The creature charged.

Ash waited.

At the final moment, he moved toward it instead of away.

The beast’s claw swept past his shoulder.

Ash slipped beneath its attack and struck the injured side.

The creature staggered.

Ash immediately moved behind it.

Aren understood.

He attacked from the opposite direction.

Moonfang joined him.

For the first time, the three predators moved together.

The creature roared and turned violently, but Ash had already anticipated the movement.

He knew where it would step.

He knew which direction it would turn.

He knew when the injured side would slow it.

The creature’s enormous body became a map.

Ash followed it.

Every attack became another piece of information.

The creature struck the ground.

Ash jumped.

Aren crossed beneath its chest.

Moonfang attacked the rear leg.

The beast turned.

Ash was already moving.

He struck the exposed wound.

The creature roared.

A burst of ancient energy exploded from its body.

Ash was thrown backward.

He hit the ground and slid across the ice.

The System appeared again.

[Ancient Entity Energy increasing.]

[Target survival instinct fully activated.]

[Warning: Host physical capacity insufficient for prolonged direct confrontation.]

Ash gritted his teeth.

He knew the System was right.

He couldn’t win through strength.

He needed something else.

The mountain pulsed.

The creature’s head turned toward Moonveil.

There.

Ash saw it.

Every time the ancient energy beneath the mountain awakened, the creature became distracted for a fraction of a second.

It wasn’t random.

Something beneath Moonveil was calling to it.

Or perhaps the creature was responding to something it could sense.

Ash looked toward the mountain.

Then toward the creature.

An idea formed.

He ran.

Not away.

Toward Moonveil.

The creature immediately followed.

Kael realized what Ash was doing.

"Ash, don’t take it toward the mountain!"

Ash kept running.

The ancient ruins blurred around him as he descended into a narrow valley. He deliberately chose the path with the most broken terrain, forcing the creature to follow through uneven ground.

The beast pursued.

Its injured side slowed it whenever it turned.

Ash increased his pace.

The creature roared.

Ash reached the center of the valley.

Ahead stood a massive stone structure, half buried beneath centuries of ice.

The same symbol from the Guardian chamber was carved into its surface.

Ash stopped.

The creature charged.

He waited.

One heartbeat.

Two.

Then he moved.

The beast slammed into the ancient structure.

The impact cracked the entire formation.

A deep blue light exploded through the stone.

The ground beneath Ash shook violently.

The creature staggered backward.

Its pale scales separated slightly along the wounded side.

Ash saw the opening.

He moved closer.

Then he stopped.

Something was beneath the creature’s scales.

A black mark.

Not a wound.

A symbol.

It looked as though something had been burned into the creature’s flesh long ago.

Ash’s blood ran cold.

The symbol was almost identical to the markings connected with the ancient entity beneath Moonveil.

The creature noticed Ash looking at it.

Its expression changed.

The aggression faded.

For the first time since the battle began, it stopped moving.

Ash slowly approached.

The creature lowered its enormous head.

Its breathing was heavy.

Blood dripped onto the snow.

The relic around Ash’s neck began glowing.

Blue light spread across the black stone.

The creature’s eyes reflected the same color.

The System appeared.

[Ancient Bloodline Resonance Detected.]

[Target has acknowledged Host.]

[High-Priority Objective: DEVOUR UNKNOWN SPECIES.]

[Warning: Target possesses information unavailable to current System database.]

Ash stared at the creature.

"You know what is beneath the mountain."

The beast didn’t answer.

Of course it couldn’t.

But its eyes shifted toward Moonveil.

Then the mountain shook.

A sound travelled through the earth.

Knock.

Ash froze.

A second impact followed.

Knock.

Kael’s face changed.

A third.

Knock.

Aren looked toward him.

"Kael?"

The old Silver Lynx didn’t respond.

A fourth impact echoed across the valley.

Knock.

Kael slowly whispered, "That isn’t supposed to happen."

Ash looked at him.

"What isn’t?"

"The records only ever described four."

The ground trembled.

Then came another sound.

A fifth knock.

This one was deeper.

It seemed to come from beneath the entire mountain.

The creature suddenly looked toward Moonveil.

Its eyes widened.

Fear returned.

Ash had never seen anything like it.

This ancient beast had fought them without hesitation. It had endured wounds that would have killed ordinary predators. It had crossed an entire continent’s migration route while being hunted by something unknown.

Yet whatever was beneath Moonveil frightened it more than death.

The mountain cracked.

A thin line opened across the distant slope.

Blue light poured through the fracture.

The creature turned toward Ash again.

For a brief moment, neither moved.

Ash understood.

The creature wasn’t trying to awaken whatever slept beneath Moonveil.

It had been running from it.

But whatever had been sleeping beneath the mountain was already awake.

The creature suddenly roared.

Its entire body surged with ancient energy.

Ash barely raised his head before the beast attacked.

The creature crossed the distance between them in an instant.

Ash moved.

The first claw missed.

The second struck his side.

Pain exploded through his body.

He was thrown across the valley.

Aren rushed forward.

Moonfang followed.

The creature drove them back with a single sweeping movement.

Kael shouted for them to retreat.

Ash forced himself upright.

Blood ran through his fur.

His body hurt.

His legs trembled.

But his eyes remained fixed on the creature.

He couldn’t let it reach Moonveil.

Not now.

Not after seeing what was beneath that mountain.

The creature charged again.

Ash lowered himself.

The Blackfang bloodline surged through his body.

He remembered every movement from the battle.

Every turn.

Every hesitation.

Every weakness.

He knew where the creature would step.

He knew how it would turn.

He knew exactly how much strength remained in its injured side.

The creature opened its jaws.

Ash waited.

At the final moment, he moved beneath its attack.

He struck the wounded side with everything he had.

The creature staggered.

Ash climbed onto the exposed section of its shoulder and drove his claws beneath the damaged scales.

The creature roared.

Ancient energy exploded outward.

Ash held on.

The black mark beneath the scales suddenly burned bright.

The creature convulsed.

For one terrifying second, Ash saw something inside the mark.

Not flesh.

Not blood.

A dark energy moving beneath the creature’s body like something alive.

The same presence he had felt beneath Moonveil.

Ash’s instincts screamed.

He pulled his claws free.

The creature collapsed onto one knee.

Ash landed in front of it.

The beast raised its head.

Its breathing became slower.

Its enormous eyes remained fixed upon Ash.

There was no longer rage in them.

Only exhaustion.

And something that looked almost like recognition.

Ash stepped forward.

The creature lowered its head.

It did not attack.

The relic pulsed once.

The mountain answered.

Ash’s ears flattened.

He looked toward Moonveil.

Another crack appeared.

Something beneath the mountain moved.

The creature suddenly tried to stand.

It failed.

Ash understood that if he walked away, it might still reach the mountain.

And whatever happened next could put everyone in the valley at risk.

He tightened his claws against the frozen ground.

The System appeared before him.

[Target condition: Critical.]

[Ancient Entity remains alive.]

[High-Priority Objective remains incomplete.]

[DEVOUR UNKNOWN SPECIES.]

Ash stared at the words.

For the first time, the command did not feel like a simple hunt.

It felt like a decision.

The creature looked toward Moonveil one final time.

Then it looked back at Ash.

Its enormous body slowly lowered into the snow.

Ash took a step forward.

The storm intensified around them.

Snow swept across the plateau, hiding the mountains and ancient ruins behind a curtain of white.

Ash stood over the fallen predator, breathing heavily as the relic continued to glow against his chest.

He still did not know what the creature was.

He did not know where it came from.

He did not know why it recognized the bloodline inside him.

But he knew one thing.

Whatever had hunted this creature across the ancient migration route had been more terrifying than the beast itself.

And whatever lived beneath Moonveil had already begun to wake.

Ash looked down at the dying ancient predator.

The System remained before his eyes.

[Target defeated.]

[Ancient Entity remains alive.]

[High-Priority Objective remains incomplete.]

[DEVOUR.]

The command remained suspended in the storm.

Ash slowly raised his head toward Moonveil.

Far beneath the mountain, something answered with another knock.

This time, the sound did not come from the mountain alone.

It seemed to come from beneath the entire world.

Ash looked back at the creature.

His decision was already made.
