Chapter 52: Mental Barrier

Axel Vance stared at the weathered gravestone for several seconds, and a thin layer of cold sweat appeared across his forehead. Alucard was simply Dracula spelled backward, and in the horror movies he remembered, that name almost always led back to the most famous vampire of them all. Sometimes it was used as Dracula’s own alias, while other stories connected the name to his son or bloodline, but neither possibility was particularly comforting.

Whichever version existed in this world, one thing had become increasingly obvious to Axel. Serial killers, ghosts, dream monsters, immortal slashers, zombies, occult practitioners, and now vampires could all exist within the same reality. He turned toward Russell, who had already grown bored with the grave and was casually kicking pebbles across the dirt.

Axel crouched until he was eye level with the boy. "Russell, can I take another look at that cross?" Russell immediately nodded, pulled the inverted metal cross from beneath his shirt, and placed it in Axel’s hand without hesitation.

The amulet felt warm and surprisingly heavy for its size. A concentrated dark energy flowed through the metal, but it was nothing like the chaotic hatred surrounding Freddy Krueger or the twisted resentment that had clung to Jason Voorhees. This power was refined and strangely clean, more like a polished piece of black crystal than something diseased or corrupted.

Axel studied it more carefully and soon noticed something even stranger. A thread of energy so faint that an ordinary person would never see it stretched from the amulet directly toward Russell’s chest. The cross had not merely been given to the boy; it had already formed some kind of supernatural bond with him.

"That’s interesting," Axel murmured. He walked back to the pickup, retrieved one of the freshly prepared bottles of Holy Water, and returned to Russell. After unscrewing the cap, Axel touched one droplet with his fingertip and carefully brought it toward the center of the inverted cross.

Nothing burned.

No black smoke appeared, and the metal did not corrode.

Instead, the Holy Water gathered into a tiny glowing bead on the surface of the cross. The soft white light and the dark energy remained clearly separated, neither trying to consume the other, until an invisible force suddenly pushed the droplet away with a faint pop.

Russell immediately became nervous. "Big Brother Axel, is something wrong with it?" Axel shook his head while considering what he had just witnessed.

The Holy Water purified spiritual corruption and hostile supernatural residue, yet the cross had triggered none of those reactions. Whatever dark power existed inside it carried no obvious malicious intent toward Russell, so instead of being purified, it simply repelled the Holy Water like two incompatible forces. At least for now, Axel saw no reason to take away something that had already protected the boy from Freddy.

He returned the cross and carefully placed the chain back around Russell’s neck. "Listen to me. This thing really can protect you, but it’s also very unusual, so don’t go showing it to people or telling everyone where you got it." Russell nodded solemnly when Axel added, "Keep it between us unless there’s a real emergency."

"I promise," Russell said. Axel rubbed the boy’s hair and stood, but his thoughts had already returned to the increasingly crowded supernatural world around him. If creatures like Count Alucard could wander through Florida without anyone noticing, then increasing his own strength was no longer optional.

Axel drove Russell back to the Crystal Lake camp and discovered Nancy Thompson, Glen Lantz, and the other teenagers packing their bags. Everyone looked much healthier after finally getting real sleep, although some still carried faint dark circles beneath their eyes. Nancy noticed Axel immediately and walked over with an appreciative smile.

"Mr. Vance, you’re back." Axel glanced toward the luggage and teased, "Leaving already? Stay another couple days and Crystal Lake might come up with some other special recreational activity for you."

Nancy’s face immediately lost color. "Please don’t even joke about that." She waved both hands and told him that one nightmare killer was more than enough for a lifetime, and if they stayed away any longer, their families would start panicking.

Axel laughed and did not try to stop them. After confirming that everyone had transportation and that the younger campers remained under proper supervision, he watched Nancy and the others leave. Considering how their vacation had started, simply driving home alive counted as an impressive success.

From the camp, Axel took his used pickup back into town and parked outside Paquita Sanchez’s grocery store. Inside, Lionel Cosgrove was still sitting at the table with a miserable expression, staring down a massive smoked ham as though it had personally ruined his life. Several empty plates nearby showed that he had already eaten an alarming amount.

Lionel looked up the instant Axel walked inside. "Brother, you’re finally back. I swear I never want to see another ham again as long as I live." Axel glanced at the remaining food and asked whether he had finished, causing Lionel to point wordlessly at the pile still waiting for him.

Before Axel could laugh, Paquita’s grandmother emerged from the back room carrying something small in both hands. The object was shaped like a crude humanoid effigy, but its inner frame had been carefully constructed from the purified white bones left behind by Jason. Even from several feet away, Axel could feel the clean spiritual energy radiating from it.

"You came back at the right time," the grandmother said. "The main structure is finished, but I wanted to ask what kind of protection you want me to emphasize." Axel stepped closer and accepted the little skeletal figure from her.

The purified bone remained warm against his palm. After everything he had learned about Russell’s vampire amulet, Axel no longer had to think long about his answer. "Can we strengthen it against mental attacks and things that target the spirit directly?"

The grandmother pointed at the glowing bone frame. "That part is already naturally strong. The power left in these bones came from Pamela’s attachment to her son, and after the resentment was purified, what remained became an unusually powerful protective force." She explained that once Axel formed a proper bond with the artifact, the protection should extend to his mind and spirit without requiring constant activation.

Axel nodded. "All right. What do I have to do?" The grandmother handed the effigy back to him and reached beneath the counter for a sewing needle.

"Blood establishes the personal link, and your own power completes it." Axel accepted the needle without hesitation and lightly pricked the tip of one finger. A single drop of blood appeared, and he pressed it against the small skull made from Jason’s purified bone.

The blood disappeared almost instantly.

Axel closed his eyes and drew on the familiar Psionic Power inside his mind. He guided a thin current through his hand and into the effigy, carefully following the same controlled sensation he had discovered while creating his first Spirit Binding charm.

A connection formed immediately.

Axel’s eyes opened slightly in surprise.

For one strange moment, the small figure in his palm no longer felt like an object he was holding. His awareness seemed to extend into it, almost as though the effigy had become another limb or organ connected directly to his consciousness.

Then the artifact responded.

A warm and remarkably pure current flowed back through the connection and spread across Axel’s entire body. Most of the energy gathered around his mental and spiritual awareness, where it formed something resembling a tough invisible membrane around the outer edge of his consciousness.

Axel concentrated on the sensation and became increasingly pleased. The barrier felt dense, stable, and instinctively reassuring, as though a second layer now stood between his mind and anything trying to force its way inside. If Freddy had tried entering his dreams while this protection existed, Axel suspected the encounter would have been much less one-sided.

His trip to Crystal Lake had started as an unwanted forest-ranger assignment. Somehow it had ended with higher Physique, increased Psionic Power, a new Spirit Binding specialization, stronger Holy Water, Freddy’s destruction, Jason’s final death, and now a supernatural defensive artifact. Even by Axel’s standards, that was an absurd return on a supposedly relaxing vacation.

He turned the little effigy over in his hand before securing it at his waist. "That’s it?" Lionel asked from the table, his words muffled because his mouth was still full of ham. Axel looked toward him while Lionel swallowed and pointed resentfully at the artifact.

"So you get an amazing magic doll that protects your brain, and I get enough ham to feed the Miami Dolphins?" Lionel asked. The grandmother immediately slapped the table and ordered him to stop complaining and keep eating before his strange body decided to dry up again.

Lionel sighed and tore off another piece.

At that moment, the bell above the grocery-store door chimed.

Everyone turned toward the entrance.

A young man who looked about twenty-five or twenty-six stepped into the store wearing a white lab coat and carrying a notebook under one arm. His eyes moved quickly over the shelves, the grandmother, Lionel’s mountain of food, and finally Axel.

The young scientist’s expression brightened immediately.

He crossed the store with almost restless energy and extended his hand. "Axel Vance? Great, I was hoping I’d find you here." Axel accepted the handshake while the stranger introduced himself with obvious excitement.

"I’m Dr. Seth Brundle. I’m consulting with the federal research team that came in with the FBI." He spoke rapidly, barely pausing between sentences as he added, "My main work is in physics and biological transport systems, and I’ve been studying some of the material recovered from this town."

Seth tightened his grip enthusiastically.

"I’ve heard a lot about you."
