Chapter 49: Jason’s Legacy
Under Paquita Sanchez’s grandmother’s direction, Axel Vance began dismantling the altar piece by piece. He scrubbed away the distorted symbols painted across the stones, tore down the ritual arrangements, and gathered the faded photographs, old child’s toy, and remaining materials into a single pile. Once everything connected to Pamela Voorhees’s ritual had been collected, Axel opened the heavy bag and dumped Jason Voorhees’s bones directly on top.
Axel then carried over a container of gasoline they had taken from the car and poured it across the entire pile. The sharp smell filled the cave while Lionel and Paquita moved several steps farther back. Axel struck a match, watched the tiny flame dance for a second, then tossed it onto the soaked altar.
Fire erupted instantly.
Orange flames climbed toward the cave ceiling and swallowed the photographs, toys, markings, and ritual materials together. The crackling blaze painted the rock walls with shifting light while smoke rolled through the chamber. Whatever had bound Pamela and Jason to Crystal Lake was finally being consumed at its source.
Paquita’s grandmother watched in silence until tears unexpectedly appeared in her eyes. "Poor Pamela," she murmured as she looked into the flames. "She only wanted her child back."
Axel glanced at her and shook his head. "Grief explains what she became, but it doesn’t erase what she did." Pamela had lost Jason, but the innocent people she murdered afterward had never been responsible for his death, and Axel had no intention of romanticizing that choice.
The old woman did not argue.
The flames gradually weakened until the cave was left in darkness once again. Axel waited until the last glowing embers died before stepping toward the pile of blackened ash. Just as he prepared to confirm everything had burned, a faint white glow appeared beneath the soot.
Axel immediately stopped.
"Of course something survived."
His hand moved toward his weapon before he reconsidered and crouched beside the ashes. Axel carefully brushed aside the blackened debris until the source of the light became visible. What he found made his expression change completely.
Jason’s bones were still there.
They had not burned.
Instead, every piece looked cleaner than before.
The yellowed skeleton had taken on a smooth ivory appearance, almost as though the fire had polished it rather than damaged it. A soft white glow surrounded the bones, and no trace of the black corruption Axel had seen earlier remained.
Paquita’s grandmother hurried closer despite having previously fallen out of her chair at the sight of Jason’s skeleton. She lifted one rib with both hands, examined its surface, and slowly frowned. "This shouldn’t have happened."
Axel picked up one of the smaller finger bones. It was warm and surprisingly smooth, while a gentle current of energy moved through his fingertips the moment he touched it. Unlike Jason’s earlier corruption, this power contained no hatred, violence, or foul spiritual pressure.
"That’s definitely different," Axel said.
The grandmother remained silent for several moments before understanding slowly appeared in her eyes. "The curse is gone, but the power that sustained it wasn’t entirely born from hatred." She looked down at the shining rib and added, "Pamela’s attachment to Jason was twisted beyond reason, but the original force behind the ritual came from a mother refusing to let go of her child."
Axel considered that explanation while turning the bone in his hand. "So after destroying the anchor and burning away the resentment, what’s left is the clean part of that power." The old woman nodded slowly.
"That is my best guess."
Axel pointed toward the skeleton. "More importantly, does this mean Jason is actually dead now?" After fighting him twice, dismembering him, dissolving him, watching him resurrect, and then beating him down again, Axel had developed a strong preference for a permanent answer.
Paquita’s grandmother gave him a firm nod. "The ritual anchoring him to this world is broken, and the hatred feeding the resurrection is gone. Jason Voorhees should finally be at rest." She looked toward the bones and added that what remained was no longer Jason himself, only material carrying purified spiritual power.
Axel visibly relaxed.
"Good."
He had absolutely no desire to kill Jason a third time.
The grandmother weighed the rib thoughtfully before giving Axel a meaningful look. "These bones are valuable now. Properly prepared, they could become the foundation of a very powerful protective artifact." Axel’s interest immediately sharpened.
"What kind?"
"A bound effigy," she replied. "Something built to hold and redirect spiritual force, not unlike the principle behind what Vera did to Lionel, except without turning the owner into a walking disaster."
Lionel immediately looked uncomfortable.
Axel looked from him to the glowing skeleton. "And you can make one?" The grandmother nodded, saying Jason’s purified bones were unusually strong spiritual material and should produce something far better than the ordinary objects she had used throughout her life.
Axel smiled.
"Then they’re yours to work with."
The grandmother raised an eyebrow. "You trust me that quickly?" Axel laughed and replied that without her help his best idea involved carrying a bag of glowing bones back to Miami and hoping somebody there knew what to do with them.
"Otherwise I’d probably end up making soup."
Paquita burst out laughing.
Lionel looked disturbed enough that Axel immediately regretted mentioning food around human remains.
The grandmother carefully wrapped the purified bones again while muttering that young people had no respect for sacred materials. Once everything was packed, Axel turned toward the cave entrance and studied the narrow passage they had used to enter. He had no intention of leaving Pamela’s hidden ritual chamber available for some future idiot to rediscover.
Axel stepped outside and examined the loose stone around the entrance. He chose one unstable section, planted his foot, and kicked hard enough to dislodge several large rocks. A second strike sent dirt, stones, and old roots collapsing into the passage until the opening disappeared beneath debris.
Paquita stared at the blocked entrance. "Nobody’s finding that again."
"That’s the idea."
The group headed back toward the car with Jason’s purified remains safely packed away. Axel took the driver’s seat while Paquita’s grandmother sat beside him and Lionel joined Paquita in the back. As Crystal Lake disappeared behind them, Axel finally allowed himself to believe that at least one part of the disaster was genuinely finished.
After several quiet minutes, Axel glanced toward the old woman. "You know anyone else who can actually do this kind of thing?" He had now met cultists, exorcists, supernatural killers, and one surprisingly competent grandmother, so finding additional knowledgeable practitioners seemed useful.
She shook her head. "The woman who originally taught me died a long time ago, and I haven’t met anyone else with genuine ability since." Most of her own work, she explained, had involved harmless blessings, protective charms, simple spirit rites, and the occasional ritual whose success she herself had sometimes questioned.
Axel nodded because that reaction matched everything he had seen from her. She knew enough to recognize dangerous occult structures and repair Lionel’s supernatural body, but Jason’s bones had terrified her as much as anyone. Nothing about her suggested she belonged to some hidden international society of powerful witches.
"I ran into another group before coming here," Axel said. "They used rituals, altered people’s bodies, and claimed they could strengthen someone by manipulating souls." The grandmother’s expression changed immediately.
Axel gave her a shortened version of the Shark Renovation cult case. He described the chanting, the ritual modifications, the obsession with creating stronger humans, and the way the tall cultist had claimed his power came from combining human sacrifice with supernatural techniques. Axel deliberately left out unnecessary investigative details and focused on what she might recognize.
The grandmother frowned throughout the explanation. "Some of that sounds superficially similar to binding traditions and corrupted spirit work, but not anything I would consider legitimate practice." She said certain folk systems could influence altered states, symbols, spiritual attachments, or ritual focus, but the cult’s methods had clearly been twisted into something cruel and experimental.
Axel thought back to the regenerating cultist. "They also claimed they could strengthen someone by draining power from relatives." The grandmother’s expression immediately hardened.
"That is vile."
She crossed her arms. "Using family bonds as a source of spiritual connection is one thing. Murdering your own relatives and trying to steal whatever remains afterward is something only a lunatic would turn into a system."
The car became noticeably quieter.
Axel glanced into the rearview mirror.
Lionel had gone pale.
The subject clearly reminded him too much of Vera.
Axel cleared his throat and deliberately changed direction. "Since we’re already discussing questionable decisions, could you teach me whatever system you actually know?" The grandmother looked at him once before answering with surprising ease.
"Certainly."
Axel blinked.
"That was easier than expected."
She shrugged. "You’ve already fought things most people would run from, and you did more today to clean up other people’s supernatural mistakes than anyone I’ve met in years." If Axel was going to carry an artifact made from Jason’s bones, she added, he needed enough understanding to use and maintain it safely.
Then the grandmother looked toward the back seat. "And you, Lionel. Move closer."
Lionel pointed at himself.
"Me?"
"Yes, you."
Lionel leaned forward between the front seats with visible suspicion.
The grandmother studied him seriously. "You are effectively a living bound effigy now. If you don’t learn how your condition works, one day you may exhaust the force holding your soul to your body and die without understanding why."
Lionel’s face changed instantly.
"What?"
Paquita grabbed his arm.
The grandmother continued before he could panic completely. "Your condition is not infinite. Every impossible recovery, every wound that should kill you, and every time your body has to restore itself consumes some of the energy maintaining the binding."
Lionel swallowed.
"So I can actually run out?"
"Yes."
His voice rose. "Why did nobody tell me this earlier?"
"Because earlier we were busy stopping your mother, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and half a town full of walking corpses."
Lionel slowly sat back.
"That’s fair."
Paquita squeezed his hand while trying not to laugh.
The grandmother looked toward Axel again. "If I’m making you an artifact from Jason’s bones, then I’ll teach you the foundations as well. You need to understand what you’re carrying instead of simply treating it like another weapon."
Axel nodded.
The grandmother’s expression became more serious as she looked through the windshield. "But what you told me about that cult bothers me. Whatever tradition they borrowed from, they have corrupted it into something dangerous."
She had little contact with organized occult groups, but what Axel described sounded wrong even by the standards of the strange practices she knew. "If you encounter people using rituals to murder families, enslave minds, or turn victims into experiments, stop them." Her tone made it clear that she considered such practitioners a disgrace to every harmless spiritual tradition she had learned.
Axel gave a faint smile. "That was already the plan." As a police officer, he would arrest anyone who surrendered and could be safely contained, but anyone actively trying to slaughter people with supernatural abilities was going to receive the same treatment as every other immediate lethal threat he had faced.
Their first stop on the way back was the Crystal Lake camp.
The moment Axel arrived, Nancy Thompson came running from the largest cabin with Glen and several other teenagers behind her. Their faces still showed exhaustion and dark circles, but everyone was alive and considerably more energetic than the previous night.
"Mr. Vance!" Nancy called. "What happened?" She explained that several people had become too exhausted to remain awake while Axel was gone, so the others had immediately forced them awake whenever nightmare symptoms began.
Axel looked toward the affected teenagers.
Several had cheeks swollen red from repeated slaps.
One boy looked like he had lost an argument with an entire boxing team.
"You people took ’wake them up’ pretty seriously."
Glen shrugged. "Nobody wanted Freddy getting another chance."
Axel could not argue with the results.
"You can stop worrying."
Everyone immediately quieted.
"Freddy’s gone."
Nancy stared at him.
"Gone how?"
"Purified."
Axel decided that was enough explanation.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then the entire group erupted in cheers.
Nancy hugged Glen while several teenagers shouted loud enough to wake anyone still sleeping in the other cabins. The younger children joined the celebration despite understanding only that the nightmare monster was apparently no longer coming back.
The celebration lasted less than a minute.
Then exhaustion won.
One by one, the teenagers rushed back toward the cabins with the enthusiasm of people finally allowed to sleep without expecting murder. Axel watched them disappear inside and smiled faintly before returning to the car.
After making sure Ethel and the children were safe, Axel drove back into town.
Emergency activity had begun spreading through the area, but the local police station was still functional. Axel entered, showed his Miami credentials, and asked to use a telephone.
The officer behind the desk wisely decided not to question why the visiting forest ranger looked as though he had survived a war.
Axel dialed Miami.
After several rings, a familiar voice answered.
"Woody."
Axel leaned against the desk. "Chief, it’s me."
There was a pause.
"Axel?"
Chief Woody sounded genuinely surprised. "Why are you calling me during your vacation? How’s the relaxing forest-ranger life treating you?"
Axel looked through the station window toward the damaged town.
He considered the destroyed pickup.
The zombie outbreak.
Freddy Krueger.
Jason Voorhees.
Vera.
Then he sighed.
"Not great."
Woody went quiet.
Axel continued, "We probably have several dozen dead."
There was another silence.
Then Woody’s voice exploded through the receiver.
"What?!"
