Chapter 39: Immortal Jason

Axel Vance stared at the severed pieces of Jason Voorhees scattered across the forest floor, and his expression grew increasingly troubled as several of them continued twitching. Leaving the pieces behind was not an option because after watching Jason regenerate from gunshots and dismemberment, Axel had no intention of discovering later that the bastard could crawl back together. He needed to move every piece somewhere he could keep it contained.

After considering his options, Axel stripped off his jacket and spread it across the ground. He loaded several of the larger pieces onto it, pulled the sleeves together, and tied them into a crude bundle. Jason’s body was far too large for one improvised sack, so Axel removed his tactical vest and used that as a second container.

Several smaller pieces still remained after both bundles were filled. Axel looked around, noticed strips of Jason’s shredded clothing scattered among the mud and blood, and gathered the strongest pieces. He tied the remaining chunks together with those strips and secured them around his belt like the world’s most disgusting collection of hunting trophies.

Axel slung both writhing bundles over his shoulders, retrieved his axe and shotgun, then started toward camp. Without his jacket or vest, his upper body was covered in dirt, sweat, and the foul black fluid that had leaked from Jason’s wounds. Looking down at the moving pieces hanging from his belt, Axel decided he looked like some deranged backwoods hunter bringing home a catch nobody should ever eat.

"At least I still have a sense of humor," he muttered while continuing through the trees. The bundles shifted occasionally against his shoulders as the pieces inside moved, which made the walk even more unpleasant. Axel ignored it and kept heading toward camp.

At the ranger station, everyone had gathered outside the largest cabin after Rob Dier came stumbling back from the lake. Rob was still pale and breathing hard as he tried to explain what had happened, but terror kept breaking his story into fragments. "He came out of the lake. Huge guy, hockey mask, shotgun didn’t do anything."

Nancy Thompson and Glen Lantz listened with growing horror. They had spent days worrying about Freddy Krueger attacking them in dreams, and now Rob was describing something equally impossible walking through the woods in broad daylight. Ethel kept glancing toward the tree line while clenching her hands tightly enough to whiten her knuckles.

A familiar voice suddenly came from the forest. "Get the kids inside and keep them away from me for a minute." Everyone jumped before recognizing Axel, and the relief that followed disappeared almost as quickly when they heard how serious he sounded.

Ethel immediately started herding the children toward the cabin. "Inside, everybody. No arguments." She shut the door once the last child disappeared and told them to stay away from the windows.

The adults and teenagers moved toward the edge of the clearing just as Axel emerged from between the trees. Nancy saw him first and let out a startled cry because the shirtless ranger was covered in grime while carrying two bulging bundles that visibly moved. Several smaller pieces wrapped in bloody strips of cloth hung from his belt and twitched with every step.

Ethel pointed at him with wide eyes. "Axel, what in God’s name are you carrying?" Axel walked into the clearing, dropped both bundles onto the ground, and watched them squirm against the dirt. "Today’s catch was harder to put down than expected."

Nobody laughed.

Axel looked toward Glen and the other teenagers instead. "I need several buckets of clean water from the well. Bring enough to fill the big utility tub behind the maintenance shed." Glen remained frozen for a moment before Nancy shoved his shoulder and told him to move.

Within several minutes, they had filled the large wooden livestock-washing tub nearly to the top. Axel stood beside it, pulled out the Blessed Bible, and began quietly reciting scripture over the clear water. A faint spiritual sensation spread through the entire container until the system confirmed the conversion.

Axel nodded with satisfaction before grabbing a clean dipper. He poured several scoops of Holy Water over his arms, chest, and shoulders until most of Jason’s filthy residue washed away. Whatever supernatural corruption was inside Jason, Axel had no interest in leaving it dried across his skin any longer than necessary.

Once he finished cleaning himself, Axel returned to the bundles and pulled them open. Severed arms, legs, chunks of torso, and other pieces of Jason’s body were still slowly contracting and twitching against the cloth. The sight immediately destroyed what little composure some of the others still had.

Glen turned toward a nearby tree and vomited. Nancy lasted only a few seconds longer before her face went white and her knees buckled, forcing Ethel to catch her before she hit the ground. Rob stood completely still as he stared at the remains of the creature responsible for Sandra’s death.

"Rob," Axel said.

Rob flinched and looked toward him.

Axel pointed at the pieces. "That’s Jason. The man who killed your sister."

Rob’s jaw tightened.

"If you want some closure, help me put him in the tub."

For several seconds, Rob could not move. Fear told him not to touch anything belonging to Jason Voorhees, especially after seeing the monster rise out of Crystal Lake and ignore a shotgun blast. Then he remembered Sandra, the years he had spent searching, and every person who had told him to stop.

"Okay," Rob said finally.

Axel gave him one side of the first bundle, and together they carried it toward the tub. One by one, they dumped Jason’s severed remains into the Holy Water until every major piece was submerged. The reaction started immediately.

Sssssss.

Black smoke rose from the surface while the water began churning around the flesh. The severed pieces twisted violently as though the Holy Water were burning through them from the inside, and the entire tub looked as if it had begun boiling without any heat beneath it.

Axel’s eyes narrowed. "That is a lot of corruption."

He placed one hand on the rim of the tub and opened the Bible again. His voice grew stronger as Holy Reading joined the power already contained in the water. Every passage caused another wave of black smoke to rise from Jason’s submerged remains.

Minutes passed.

Then more.

Everyone watched from a distance while Axel continued reciting, afraid that stopping too early might allow Jason to rebuild himself inside the tub. Gradually the violent movement weakened, and most of the flesh disappeared into the increasingly cloudy water.

Axel eventually stopped.

Something felt wrong.

The Holy Water’s spiritual force was fading much faster than it should have.

He took the dipper and began scooping some of the cloudy liquid away. As the level dropped, the bottom of the tub became visible, and everyone nearby immediately fell silent. Jason’s flesh was gone, but a dense collection of bones remained beneath the water.

The bones were moving.

Tiny strands of fresh tissue slowly pushed out from several of them before the remaining Holy Water burned those strands away. Seconds later, more tissue began growing from the same places, only to dissolve again in an endless cycle of regeneration and destruction.

Axel crouched beside the tub and stared at the bones. "So that’s the real problem." Destroying Jason’s flesh had only removed the visible result, while whatever curse or supernatural force sustained him appeared to remain anchored deeper.

Brute force clearly was not enough.

Then Axel remembered the old woman at the general store.

She had claimed to sense spiritual energy around him before he ever told her anything about himself. At the time, Axel had dismissed her invitation to read tarot cards because he was busy supervising the children, but somebody capable of genuinely sensing spiritual power might know more about cursed remains than a police officer with a Bible. "Looks like I owe Grandma a visit."

Axel carefully removed Jason’s bones from the weakening Holy Water and placed them inside a clean heavy-duty sack. Even separated from the flesh, several pieces continued producing tiny regenerative movements against the fabric. Axel tied the bag tightly before turning back toward the others.

"I need another tub of water before I leave."

Nobody argued.

They refilled the utility tub from the well, and Axel once again recited scripture until the entire quantity became Holy Water. Another system notification appeared when the conversion finished.

[Large quantity of Holy Water successfully created.]

Axel pointed toward the fresh tub. "This works the same way as the bottled stuff. If somebody starts having nightmare symptoms, wake them first and give them small sips only if they’re awake enough to swallow safely." He looked toward Nancy and Glen before adding, "If they won’t wake up, splash the Holy Water on their face and skin until Freddy backs off."

Glen nodded quickly.

Axel filled several empty bottles from the newly blessed tub and secured them for emergencies. "Keep the children together, and nobody wanders toward the lake. If Rob’s story wasn’t enough warning, the bag in my truck should be."

Rob stared at the sack containing Jason’s bones and decided Axel had made his point.

Axel loaded the bones, Holy Water, axe, shotgun, and the rest of his equipment into the Ford pickup. He climbed into the driver’s seat, started the engine, and looked once toward the cabins before pulling away. If the old woman knew anything about curses, he needed that answer before Jason’s bones found another way to regenerate.

The pickup hit the dirt road and accelerated toward town.

Behind him, Crystal Lake disappeared between the trees.

Jason’s bones continued moving inside the sack.
