The Harem Tax

Winter descended on Los Angeles not with snow, but with a crisp, dry chill that stripped the smog from the sky and made the sprawling concrete of the city look almost pristine.

Elias van Kempen, Paul, and Owen had just returned to the Sovereign Media headquarters on Sunset Boulevard after the blistering, high-stakes psychological warfare of the New York VIP party. The massive, twenty-thousand-square-foot warehouse was now fully operational, humming with the quiet efficiency of the stolen commercial-grade furniture and the terrifying presence of its Managing Partner.

Elias walked through the lobby, shrugging off his heavy overcoat. He had successfully orchestrated a double-netori against John Casablancas, securing the loyalty of a legendary supermodel and the future of an action-movie empress. The board was set. The pieces were moving.

But the digital loan shark resting in his cerebral cortex had a very different perspective on his recent success.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: REGIONAL PROXIMITY ALERT TRIGGERED.][WARNING: HIGH-DENSITY ACCUMULATION OF TIER-1 FEMALE ASSETS DETECTED IN A SINGLE METROPOLITAN ZONE.]

Elias stopped in his tracks, his dark eyes narrowing slightly.

[ANALYSIS: CONGREGATING CHARLIZE THERON, CINDY CRAWFORD, AND MILLA JOVOVICH IN THE GREATER LOS ANGELES AREA CONSTITUTES A MASSIVE ESCALATION OF ROMANTIC AND LOGISTICAL RISK. Elias’s jaw locked. A muscle feathered in his cheek.

Five hundred dollars. Gone. Evaporated into the digital ether, simply because he was too successful at hoarding the most valuable women in the entertainment industry. It was a blatant, unapologetic extortion racket. The system was penalizing him for his own ruthless efficiency.

"This is a predatory operational tax," Elias muttered darkly, walking toward his corner office. "You are punishing me for asset concentration. I demand a forensic accounting of these so-called ’maintenance’ fees."

The system, predictably, did not respond with a ledger. It simply chimed a cheerful, mocking sound.

"Everything okay, man?" Owen asked, poking his head up from a modular steel desk where he had been attempting to construct a pyramid out of paperclips. "You look like you just found out the bank started charging you to breathe."

"The bank of my existence is currently executing a hostile shakedown, Owen," Elias replied, rubbing his temples. "I need to review the transfer documents for Milla Jovovich. Please ensure the perimeter is secure. I am not in the mood for unannounced—"

The heavy glass doors at the front of the warehouse swung open.

Stepping into the lobby, wearing a sharply tailored, oversized power suit that screamed 1990s Hollywood royalty, was Charlize Theron. She removed a pair of dark sunglasses, her blonde hair falling perfectly into place, projecting an aura of absolute, unbothered command.

"Elias," Charlize called out, her voice echoing in the large space. "We need to talk about the backend points on this new independent script you sent me. The producers are trying to cap the gross at twenty million."

Elias turned, ready to engage his Deuteragonist.

But before he could speak, the glass doors swung open a second time.

Stepping into the lobby, wearing a simple, elegant trench coat over a high-fashion ensemble that practically demanded a runway, was Cindy Crawford. She moved with the predatory, liquid grace of the Runway Mafia, an intimidating physical presence that instantly commanded the entire room.

"Elias, darling," Cindy announced, not noticing Charlize yet. "I just got off the phone with my lawyers in New York. Elite Management is threatening an injunction. We need to counter-file before the Italian press gets hold of the—"

Cindy stopped.

Charlize turned around.

The two women, representing the absolute apex of their respective industries, locked eyes in the center of the Sovereign Media lobby.

The temperature in the warehouse seemed to drop by ten degrees in a single second. The air became thick, heavy, and highly combustible.

Paul Rudd, who had been carrying a tray of incredibly cheap, generic-brand coffee toward Elias’s office, froze in mid-step. His eyes darted between Charlize and Cindy. He slowly, carefully placed the tray on the nearest desk, looking like a man who had just accidentally wandered into an active minefield.

"Oh my god," Paul mouthed silently to Owen.

Owen just stared, a look of profound, terrified respect dawning on his face. "Wow. The aesthetic density in this room right now is, like, physically overwhelming. I feel like I’m going to get a nosebleed just looking at them."

Elias stood near his office door, observing the sudden logistical nightmare.

Charlize looked Cindy up and down, a slow, incredibly sharp, and dangerous smile spreading across her face.

"Elias," Charlize drawled, her voice dripping with aristocratic sarcasm. "Kau tidak bilang Sovereign Media sekarang membuka panti asuhan untuk model katalog yang kabur dari agensi lamanya." (Elias, you didn’t say Sovereign Media is now opening an orphanage for catalog models running away from their old agencies.)

Cindy didn’t flinch. She simply tilted her head, her dark eyes flashing with the ruthless, battle-hardened pride of a woman who had survived the European fashion circuits.

"And you didn’t mention you were running a charity for struggling actresses waiting for their big break," Cindy replied smoothly, her voice a velvet dagger. She looked back at Elias. "I thought this was a boutique firm, Elias. Not a holding pen for the B-list."

The tension spiked. It was the birth of the Faction War.

Elias knew that if he intervened with standard negotiation tactics, they would turn their combined, devastating firepower onto him. If he took a side, the empire would fracture. If he tried to buy them dinner to calm them down, he would have to spend hundreds of dollars on a VIP restaurant, violating every principle of capital preservation he held dear.

He needed to defuse the bomb, and he needed to do it cheaply.

He mentally engaged the digital loan shark.

[CHA-CHING!]

Elias stepped out from his office, leaning casually against the doorframe. The system smoothed out his vocal cords, layering his voice with a frequency of pure, elegant amusement. He let out a rich, dark, perfectly calibrated laugh that echoed through the lobby, instantly shattering the suffocating tension.

"Charlize, Sovereign Media tidak membuka panti asuhan," Elias smiled, a masterpiece of shameless corporate redirection. (Charlize, Sovereign Media is not opening an orphanage.) "Kita mengakuisisi aset blue-chip yang sedang salah kelola." (We are acquiring blue-chip assets that are currently mismanaged.)

He looked at both women, his dark eyes radiating an intoxicating, unbothered confidence.

"Omong-omong," Elias continued smoothly, waving a hand vaguely toward the back of the room, "Paul akan menyeduhkan teh kamomil untuk kalian berdua sementara aku menganalisis struktur pajak lintas batas ini." (By the way, Paul will brew chamomile tea for both of you while I analyze this cross-border tax structure.)

Paul’s eyes went wide with sheer terror. "What? Me? Elias, I don’t—"

Elias didn’t break eye contact with the two queens. "Paul, jika tehnya tidak sempurna, kau dipecat." (Paul, if the tea is not perfect, you are fired.)

Elias then executed a flawless, tactical retreat. He stepped backward into his corner office and pulled the heavy acoustic glass door shut, locking it with a sharp click.

Outside in the lobby, the silence was deafening.

Charlize and Cindy slowly turned their terrifying, combined gaze onto Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson.

Paul swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. He grabbed Owen by the arm.

"Owen," Paul whispered, his voice trembling. "We have to make the tea. If we mess up the tea, they are going to murder us and hide our bodies under the liquidator desks."

"I don’t think we have chamomile, man," Owen whispered back, looking around the barren breakroom area. "I think we only have that instant coffee that smells like burnt tires."

"Then we will boil the instant coffee and tell them it’s an exotic European blend!" Paul panicked, dragging Owen toward the tiny kitchenette. "Move! Before they start throwing staplers!"

Inside his soundproof office, Elias van Kempen sat down at his desk. He could see Paul and Owen scrambling frantically in the background, trying to appease the two most intimidating women in Los Angeles.

Elias opened a ledger, a deeply satisfied, utterly shameless smirk on his face.

He had successfully neutralized a Category 5 Harem Catfight, preserved the operational integrity of Sovereign Media, and avoided paying for a five-hundred-dollar peace-treaty lunch, all by sacrificing the mental well-being of his best friends.

It was, from a purely capitalist perspective, a flawless transaction.

As he began calculating Milla Jovovich’s projected buyout fee, the system quietly collected its daily toll.

[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM WARNING: DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DEDUCTION INITIATED.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

Elias barely registered the deduction. His total liquid cash settled at $432,080.00. The empire was growing, the factions were established, and his liquid cash was safe.

Now, he just had to figure out how to destroy John Casablancas without spending any of it.
