Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties
Chapter 59: The Vocal Sabotage
The Vocal Sabotage
The morning sun hammered against the cheap, beige curtains of Room 104 at The Pelican Motel, announcing a new day of relentless capitalist warfare.
Elias van Kempen sat on the edge of the mattress, wrapped in a threadbare towel, calculating his operational bandwidth. Today was critical. The Sync Licensing strategy for "Creep" was generating retail traction, but he needed a traditional distribution network to flood the physical record stores before Interscope Records realized he had flanked them. He had a 10:00 AM ambush meeting scheduled with a senior distribution executive from Warner Music Group.
He picked up the heavy, plastic rotary phone on the nightstand to order his daily, highly contentious "complimentary" continental breakfast from the front desk.
He cleared his throat, preparing to deploy his signature, velvet-wrapped baritone.
"Stan," Elias began, expecting the smooth, commanding resonance of a CEO.
Instead, what erupted from his vocal cords was a sound so horrifically unnatural, it defied the laws of physics.
"Squeak."
It wasn’t just a voice crack. It was a high-pitched, prepubescent, helium-infused yodel. It sounded like a cartoon mouse getting stepped on.
Elias froze. The plastic phone receiver slipped slightly in his hand.
He took a slow, deep breath, mentally visualizing the vocal chord tension, and tried again.
"I require the—"
"I we-qwi-er da—"
The sound was even worse this time. It was a tragic, squeaking catastrophe that shattered his Playboy Alpha aura into a million pathetic pieces.
Across the room, Paul Rudd, who was currently attempting to iron a shirt with a lukewarm travel iron, slowly turned around.
Paul stared at Elias. The silence in the room stretched for five agonizing seconds.
"Did you... did you just squeak?" Paul whispered, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and dawning, hysterical joy.
Elias did not answer. He slowly lowered the phone, his dark, mesmerizing eyes blazing with an entirely silent, absolute fury. He knew exactly what this was.
The digital loan shark had finally collected its debt.

"Oh my god," Paul wheezed, dropping the travel iron onto the carpet. He slapped a hand over his mouth, his shoulders beginning to shake violently. "Elias... say something. Please, say something else."
Elias glared at him with the intensity of a thousand burning suns. He opened his mouth, intending to deliver a blistering, intellectual threat involving Paul’s future unemployment.
"Shad-up, Paaawl!"
It was a total disaster. The majestic, terrifying European tycoon had been replaced by a squeaky, hormonal teenager.
Paul couldn’t hold it in anymore. He collapsed onto the floor, clutching his stomach, tears streaming down his face as he let out a loud, uninhibited roar of laughter.
"It’s... it’s beautiful!" Paul gasped, pointing a shaking finger at Elias. "The monster has a weakness! You sound like you belong in a boyband that hasn’t hit puberty yet! You can’t negotiate with Warner Music looking like Don Corleone and sounding like Mickey Mouse!"
Elias didn’t panic. Panic was a waste of caloric energy. He simply closed his mouth, locking his jaw with clinical precision.
He stood up, walked over to his vintage leather jacket, and pulled out a small, leather-bound notepad and a gold pen. He scribbled a sentence and shoved it into Paul’s chest.
Paul wiped a tear from his eye and read the note aloud.
"Put your tie on. You are now the official Voice of Sovereign Media. If you laugh again, I will sell your internal organs to pay the motel bill."
Paul swallowed hard, the laughter dying in his throat. "Wait. You’re bringing me to the Warner meeting? Elias, I’m an actor, not a corporate negotiator! I don’t know what to say!"
Elias scribbled another note.
"You will say exactly what I gesture. We are executing the Shameless Pantomime."
The lobby of the Beverly Hills Hotel was a cathedral of old money, polished marble, and whispered power.
Elias van Kempen strode through the massive glass doors, wearing a perfectly tailored black suit, his vintage leather jacket draped over his shoulders like a cape. He radiated pure, unadulterated danger. He looked like an assassin who had just walked off the set of Pulp Fiction.
Following half a step behind him was Paul Rudd, sweating profusely in a slightly oversized beige suit, clutching a briefcase like a shield.
Elias scanned the lobby.
Sitting in a plush velvet booth near the center of the room was Richard Vance, the Senior Vice President of Distribution for Warner Music Group. He was an older, aggressive executive who specialized in bleeding independent artists dry.
But Elias’s eyes drifted to the opposite side of the lobby.
Sitting on a massive leather sofa, surrounded by a phalanx of bodyguards, publicists, and managers, was absolute pop royalty.
Whitney Houston.
She was at the absolute peak of her powers. Her aura was blinding. She was sipping a sparkling water, looking profoundly bored by the sycophants hovering around her.
Elias’s capitalist brain immediately recognized the target. The Pop Dictators faction. She was a macro-boss, a gateway to the global touring infrastructure.
But he couldn’t approach her. Not while sounding like a cartoon mouse. He had to handle the distribution executive first.
Elias walked directly to Richard Vance’s booth. He didn’t introduce himself. He simply sat down across from the executive, crossing his long legs with aristocratic elegance, and stared at him with cold, deadpan silence.
Richard Vance frowned, looking at the teenager, then at the sweating man standing behind him. "Who the hell are you?"
Elias didn’t speak. He smoothly raised a hand and snapped his fingers twice, pointing at Paul.
Paul jumped, frantically opening the briefcase. "Uh, hello, Mr. Vance. We are Sovereign Media. This is Elias van Kempen, the Managing Partner. I am... his Voice."
Vance let out a harsh bark of laughter. "His Voice? What, the kid too important to talk to me?"
Elias didn’t react to the insult. He maintained unbroken, terrifying eye contact with Vance. He slowly raised his right hand, pointed to his expensive watch, and then ran his index finger slowly and deliberately across his own throat. The Gesture Cut-Throat.
Paul’s eyes widened in sheer panic. He looked at Elias, then at Vance, desperately trying to translate the sociopathic pantomime into corporate English.
"Uh... Mr. van Kempen says... he says that time is money," Paul stammered, sweating bullets. "And your current offer for physical distribution just... killed the negotiation. He demands seventy percent of the gross wholesale, or he will... he will buy your company and fire you."
Vance stopped laughing. He stared at Paul, then looked back at Elias.
Elias was sitting perfectly still, his striking, incredibly handsome face an unreadable mask of cold boredom. He looked like a European sociopath who had people murdered for sport.
Across the lobby, Whitney Houston had noticed the strange interaction. She lowered her sunglasses, her eyes narrowing as she watched the silent, stunningly beautiful young man in the black suit dominating the Warner executive without uttering a single word.
"Seventy percent?!" Vance sputtered, his face turning red. "That’s extortion! You’re an unproven indie label! You don’t have the leverage for seventy percent!"
Elias didn’t blink. He slowly reached into his jacket pocket. He pulled out a small, silver calculator. He placed it gently on the table. He typed in the number ’$1,200,000’, pushed the calculator toward Vance, and then aggressively rolled his eyes toward the ceiling.
"Uh," Paul translated, his voice shaking. "Mr. van Kempen is indicating that... that your valuation of his ’Creep’ master tape is absurdly low. He already holds a direct retail sync monopoly generating passive millions. He doesn’t need your terrestrial radio pipeline. He’s offering you a slice of a guaranteed global phenomenon, and you are boring him with your lack of vision."
Vance looked at the calculator. He looked at the dead, empty stare of the teenager. The psychological pressure was immense. The kid wasn’t arguing. He wasn’t pleading. He was just silently judging him with an aura that screamed ’billionaire’.
"The silent treatment," Vance muttered, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. "A hardball intimidation tactic. Fine. You want to play the stoic European boss? I can respect that. I can give you sixty percent. But I want a five-year exclusivity lock on all future Sovereign Media audio releases."
Elias slowly shook his head. He didn’t type on the calculator.
He leaned forward, picked up a heavy crystal ashtray from the table, and very gently, very deliberately, flipped it upside down, dumping the imaginary ashes onto the immaculate white tablecloth.
Paul let out a whimpering sound. "Mr. van Kempen says... your offer is garbage. He wants seventy percent, no exclusivity lock, and a guaranteed minimum pressing of five hundred thousand units by next quarter. Or he walks."
Vance stared at the upside-down ashtray. The sheer, shameless arrogance of the gesture was staggering. The kid was literally treating a senior Warner executive like a busboy.
Vance looked around the lobby. He saw other executives watching. He saw Whitney Houston’s entourage glancing over. If he lost the distribution rights to the most highly anticipated indie track of the year to Sony or BMG, he would be a laughingstock.
"Fine," Vance hissed, slamming his hand on the table. "Seventy percent. No lock. Half a million units. Have your lawyers send the paperwork. But you tell your boss he’s a ruthless son of a bitch."
Elias didn’t smile. He simply offered a slow, elegant nod of acknowledgment.
Deep within the darkest recesses of his mind, the system surrendered.
[CHA-CHING!][CHA-CHING!]
[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: SILENT EXTORTION SUCCESSFUL!][EVALUATION: YOU WERE STRIPPED OF YOUR GREATEST WEAPON, YET YOU WEAPONIZED SILENCE INTO A DEVASTATING PSYCHOLOGICAL ATTACK. THE SYSTEM IS BOTH APPALLED AND IMPRESSED BY YOUR SHAMELESS PANTOMIME.][SITCOM PENALTY LIFTED. BARITONE VOCAL CHORDS RESTORED.][REWARD: +25 SHAMELESS POINTS (CP) DEPOSITED.]
Elias felt a sudden, warm vibration in his throat. The mechanical lock had been disengaged. His liquid cash took a hit from the daily maintenance (-$50), dropping to $56,302.00, but his CP was back to a healthy 25. He was fully armed.
Elias stood up slowly, smoothing the front of his jacket.
He looked down at the sweating, defeated executive.
"The paperwork will be delivered to your office by noon, Richard," Elias said.
His voice was a deep, resonant, impossibly smooth baritone that echoed across the quiet lobby. It was the voice of a man who owned the world.
Vance physically jumped in his seat. "You... you can speak?!"
"I only speak when the numbers are correct," Elias replied flawlessly, offering a chilling smile.
He turned on his heel and walked away, leaving Paul to scramble after him with the briefcase.
As Elias walked across the lobby, his path took him directly past the massive leather sofa.
Whitney Houston watched him approach. She had seen the entire silent negotiation. She had seen the brutal, commanding gestures, and she had just heard the devastating baritone voice that had finally broken the silence.
As Elias passed her, he didn’t stop. He didn’t ask for an autograph. He didn’t act like a fan.
He simply turned his head, met her eyes, and offered a faint, respectful, deeply charismatic nod, recognizing her as a fellow apex predator in the corporate jungle.
"Good morning," Elias murmured, his voice a velvet rumble.
He kept walking, disappearing out the glass doors into the Los Angeles sun.
Whitney Houston sat perfectly still for a long moment. She slowly pushed her sunglasses up onto her head, a bemused, highly intrigued smile playing on her lips. She sweatdropped slightly at the sheer arrogance of the boy.
"Someone find out who that crazy, incredibly handsome man is," Whitney murmured to her manager. "I think he just bought the hotel."
The Pop Dictators had been alerted. The game was about to get much, much bigger.
