The Titan Warning Shot

The suffocating, smog-choked heat of late April in Los Angeles felt like a physical weight pressing down on the cracked asphalt of Sovereign Studios. The sprawling, 1920s-era production lot was quiet, save for the distant hum of a recently paid industrial air conditioning unit in Elias van Kempen’s corner office.

The MTV syndication hack had been a catastrophic success. "Creep" was currently blanketing national television airwaves in heavy rotation, entirely free of charge, infecting the minds of millions of teenagers. The Sovereign Media phone lines had finally stopped ringing with panicked local cable operators, and Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson were currently lying on the vintage leather sofas in the lobby, desperately trying to recover their baseline human vitality.

"I still hear the dial tone, Owen," Paul whispered, staring blankly at the ceiling, looking like a war veteran who had seen too much. "When I close my eyes, I see the MTV request line operator’s face. I don’t even know what she looks like, but I see her. She’s judging me."

Owen, chewing on a toothpick, nodded slowly. "You gotta let the logistical trauma wash over you, man. Be like water. We hijacked the cultural zeitgeist. We are basically digital pirates."

Before Paul could formulate a response about how terrifying it was to be a digital pirate on a sixteen-year-old’s payroll, the heavy iron gates of Sovereign Studios began to groan open.

The distinct, heavy crunch of ultra-premium tires on gravel shattered the afternoon silence.

A pristine, jet-black 1993 Mercedes-Benz 600 SEL glided onto the lot. It didn’t drive; it prowled. The vehicle possessed a heavy, menacing corporate gravity that immediately suggested the person inside could buy and sell everyone in the zip code before breakfast. The car came to a smooth halt directly in front of the main administrative building.

Paul Rudd sat up, wiping the sleep from his eyes. He peered out the dusty lobby window.

A man stepped out of the back of the Mercedes. He was relatively short, dressed in an impeccably tailored but deliberately casual dark jacket, wearing a signature baseball cap pulled low over his eyes. He exuded the intense, hyper-aggressive, relentlessly brilliant energy of a man who spent his life bending global culture to his will.

Paul gasped. All the blood drained from his face. He scrambled backward, practically falling off the sofa.

"Elias!" Paul shrieked, sprinting toward the heavy mahogany doors of the corner office and throwing them open. "Elias, do not panic, but there is an apex predator on our driveway! It’s Jimmy Iovine!"

Elias van Kempen, seated behind his desk, did not look up from the international trademark registration forms he was reviewing.

"I am aware of Mr. Iovine’s identity, Paul," Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, unbothered purr. Jimmy Iovine was a titan. The co-founder of Interscope Records. The man currently orchestrating the rise of gangsta rap, funding Death Row Records, and single-handedly reshaping the American music industry. He was a macro-boss, a gatekeeper of the highest order.

"He’s walking toward the building!" Paul panicked, waving his hands frantically. "He’s the biggest music executive on the West Coast! Why is he here?! Are we being sued?! Did MTV tell him we hacked them?!"

"He is here because the scent of blood in the water attracts larger sharks," Elias replied flawlessly, signing his name at the bottom of the document with a stolen silver KLM pen. He looked up, his dark eyes gleaming with a lethal, calculating intelligence. "Paul. Go across Sunset Boulevard to that absurdly overpriced artisanal coffee shop. Purchase one cup of their most expensive dark roast black coffee. Bring it to my desk immediately."

"Coffee?! Elias, the man who controls Dr. Dre is in our lobby!"

"And he is a guest in my sovereign territory," Elias corrected, his tone hardening into absolute, unbreakable steel. "Purchase the coffee, Paul."

Paul whimpered, grabbing a ten-dollar bill Elias slid across the desk, and bolted out the back door.

Deep within Elias’s cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark aggressively logged the sociopathic formality.

His liquid cash balance ticked down to $230,960.00. It was a microscopic bleed, but Elias felt it. He filed the pain away, hardening his mental armor just as the heavy doors to his office swung open.

Jimmy Iovine walked in.

He didn’t knock. He didn’t wait to be announced. He stepped into the spacious, sunlit office, his sharp eyes scanning the room, taking in the vintage Hollywood architecture, the mahogany desk, and finally, the impossibly handsome, sixteen-year-old boy sitting behind it.

"Cute spot," Jimmy said, his voice carrying the rapid-fire, aggressive cadence of a New York hustler who had conquered California. He didn’t take his baseball cap off. He walked right up to the desk, projecting an aura of overwhelming institutional power. "A little dusty, but it’s got character. You’re Elias."

Elias did not stand up. He leaned back in his leather executive chair, crossing his long legs with impeccable, aristocratic grace. He offered Jimmy a slow, perfectly measured smile that revealed absolutely nothing.

"Welcome to Sovereign Media, Jimmy," Elias purred softly. "I would offer you a seat, but I assume a man who manages the distribution of Death Row Records prefers to stay on his feet."

Jimmy let out a short, sharp bark of a laugh. He pulled up a leather guest chair anyway and sat down, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

"You’ve got balls, kid, I’ll give you that," Jimmy noted, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied Elias’s flawless, dangerously aesthetic face. "I saw what you did to Andy Schuon at MTV. Buying local ad slots to force a national syndication? That’s guerrilla warfare. It’s dirty, it’s cheap, and it’s brilliant. You humiliated a network vice president for the price of a used Honda Civic."

"I merely optimized an inefficient broadcast market," Elias replied smoothly.

Just then, Paul Rudd scurried into the office, hyperventilating, holding a steaming, high-end paper cup of black coffee. He placed it trembling on the desk in front of Jimmy and practically sprinted back out of the room.

Jimmy looked at the coffee, then back at Elias. He reached into his casual jacket and pulled out a sleek, heavy leather portfolio.

"You’re smart. You’re a hustler," Jimmy stated, dropping the portfolio onto the mahogany desk. "But you’re playing in a sandbox, Elias. You’ve got one hit song. You’re pressing your own CDs, you’re threatening retail managers at Tower Records, and you’re pissing off the television networks. You are a one-man army, and eventually, a one-man army runs out of bullets. The major labels are going to wake up, they’re going to blacklist your distribution pipeline, and they’re going to crush you."

Jimmy unzipped the portfolio and slid a thick, legally bound contract across the desk.

"I’m here to save you from that," Jimmy said, his tone shifting into the smooth, patronizing cadence of a benevolent mentor. "Interscope Records is acquiring Sovereign Media’s music division. We take the master for ’Creep.’ We take your publishing. We take your merchandising rights, your touring revenue, and your future options. A full 360-deal. In exchange, you get the full, unstoppable backing of the Time Warner distribution machine."

Jimmy tapped the front page of the contract with a blunt finger.

"And I am giving you two million dollars cash for your record label, kid," Jimmy announced, waiting for Elias’s eyes to widen. "You can buy a Ferrari. You can stop eating out of taco trucks. You can be a rockstar. Don’t be greedy. Sign the paper."

It was the ultimate trap. Two million dollars was an astronomical sum for a teenager. To anyone else, it was a golden ticket.

To Elias van Kempen, a man who possessed the memories of a multi-decade financial empire and a God-Tier understanding of contract law, it was an insulting, predatory joke. A 360-deal was modern-day slavery wrapped in a velvet bow. Jimmy wasn’t trying to make him a star; Jimmy was trying to buy a cash-printing machine for pennies.

Elias didn’t get angry. He didn’t throw the contract back. He needed to know exactly why the mighty Jimmy Iovine had personally driven down to a dusty Hollywood lot to try and buy him out.

He mentally engaged the digital loan shark. He needed the X-Ray. He needed the blood underneath Interscope’s pristine corporate armor.

[CHA-CHING!]

The world around Elias instantly shifted. A translucent, radioactive-red grid snapped over his vision. It bypassed the heavy mahogany desk, bypassed the two-million-dollar contract, and locked directly onto the thick leather portfolio Jimmy had left unzipped.

The system’s forensic algorithms ripped through the leather, decrypting the highly classified, internally restricted accounting ledgers and legal memos hidden within.

Blocks of blinding, neon-red text scrolled violently down Elias’s field of vision.

[SCAN COMPLETE. Elias’s dark eyes turned into absolute, terrifying voids of pure capitalist joy.

He allowed the system overlay to fade. The red grid vanished, leaving only the incredibly arrogant music mogul sitting across from him, sipping the ten-dollar coffee.

Elias slowly picked up the contract. He held it by the corner, as if it were a piece of soiled tissue paper.

"Two million dollars," Elias purred, his voice dropping an octave, radiating a heavy, suffocating aura of absolute superiority.

"Two million," Jimmy nodded, looking incredibly pleased with himself. "Life-changing money, Elias."

Elias tossed the contract back across the desk. It slid over the polished mahogany and hit Jimmy’s coffee cup with a soft thud.

"Two million dollars?" Elias repeated, but this time, the polite facade vanished entirely. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk, utilizing his ’Financial Alibi’ flawlessly. "That money isn’t even enough to cover the legal fees Interscope is facing this month because of your rap artists, Jimmy."

Jimmy Iovine froze. The coffee cup stopped halfway to his mouth.

"My accounting firm combed through your corporate taxes," Elias lied with breathtaking, shameless perfection, his eyes locking onto Jimmy like a sniper acquiring a target. "I know about the police boycotts. I know about the massive public relations nightmare your gangsta rap roster is causing. I know that Time Warner is holding a gun to your head, threatening to drop your entire distribution pipeline because your artists are too radioactive for their shareholders."

Jimmy’s mouth opened slightly. The color began to rapidly drain from his famously tan face.

Elias didn’t stop. He pushed the knife in all the way to the hilt, executing a brutal, intellectual face-slapping.

"You didn’t drive down here to be my mentor," Elias whispered softly, his words echoing in the dead silence of the office. "You drove down here because you are bleeding cash. You need a massive, controversy-free, global hit to balance your quarterly ledger and keep Time Warner off your back. You aren’t trying to buy me, Jimmy; you are trying to use my profits to cover your insolvency."

A massive, highly visible bead of sweat materialized on Jimmy Iovine’s temple. It was the legendary, undeniable sweatdrop of a Titan who had just realized he had walked into a trap set by a monster. His hand began to tremble slightly, sloshing the expensive coffee over the rim of the cup.

He looked at Elias, no longer seeing a sixteen-year-old kid. He saw a terrifying, omniscient corporate raider who somehow possessed access to Interscope’s most heavily guarded internal secrets. The ’Fake Syndicate’ bluff had worked perfectly. Jimmy genuinely believed Elias had spies inside his accounting department.

"You... you’ve got no idea what you’re talking about," Jimmy hissed, his voice tight, his arrogant bravado completely shattering. He abruptly slammed the coffee cup down on the desk.

"Take back your monopoly money," Elias commanded softly, pointing a single, elegant finger at the contract. "Before I decide to acquire Interscope for five dollars."

Jimmy stood up so fast his chair scraped violently against the hardwood floor. He snatched the contract off the desk and shoved it back into his portfolio. His hands were shaking with a potent mix of profound humiliation, shock, and rising fury.

He had come here to play the benevolent god. He was leaving as a terrified mortal.

"You made a mistake today, kid," Jimmy warned, his voice low and dangerous, retreating toward the door. "You think you’re untouchable because you hacked MTV and bullied a retail manager. You just declared war on the entire system. We’re going to freeze you out. I am going to make sure your records don’t move past the California state line."

"I look forward to the audit, Jimmy," Elias smiled flawlessly.

Jimmy Iovine turned and stormed out of the office, the heavy doors slamming shut behind him. Seconds later, the screech of his Mercedes tires echoed across the lot as the Titan fled the territory.

Elias sat back in his chair, taking a deep, calming breath. The Warning Shot had been fired. He had successfully humiliated one of the most powerful men in the music industry. He hadn’t destroyed him—Jimmy was an ’Unkillable’ who would inevitably strike back—but Elias had drawn the battle lines on his own terms.

Deep within his mind, the digital loan shark erupted in a majestic, golden symphony of supreme capitalist triumph.

[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: TITAN WARNING SHOT EXECUTED WITH DEVASTATING, GOD-TIER SOCIOPATHY!][EVALUATION: YOU REJECTED A MILLION-DOLLAR BAIT, X-RAYED A MUSIC MOGUL’S FINANCIAL INSECURITY, AND USED A FAKE ACCOUNTING ALIBI TO MENTALLY DECAPITATE HIM IN YOUR OWN OFFICE. YOU CALLED TWO MILLION DOLLARS ’MONOPOLY MONEY’. YOU ARE A FLAWLESS MONSTER. THE COLD WAR HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN.][REWARD: +25 SHAMELESS POINTS (CP) DEPOSITED.]

Elias checked his portfolio. His CP had surged to a comfortable 240. His liquid cash was stable.

The door peeked open, and Paul Rudd slowly crawled into the room on his hands and knees, looking absolutely terrified.

"Elias," Paul whispered, hyperventilating. "Did you... did you just reject two million dollars and threaten to buy Interscope Records? Because if you did, we need to hire armed guards."

"Get off the floor, Paul," Elias murmured, standing up and walking toward the window to watch the Los Angeles sunset. "And call the manufacturer in Taiwan. Tell them to double our physical CD production immediately. Mr. Iovine is going to attempt an embargo, and we are going to need a very large hammer to break his blockade."
