Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties
Chapter 101: The 15-Minute Extortion
The 15-Minute Extortion
The morning sunlight filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Beverly Hills Penthouse was golden, expensive, and utterly perfect. The remnants of the previous night’s profound, emotional foundation-building between Elias and Charlize still hung in the air—a heavy, intoxicating tension that promised a dynasty.
Then, a sound of pure, unadulterated financial agony shattered the romance.
"Twelve dollars."
Elias van Kempen stood near the opulent mahogany minibar, his broad shoulders stiff, his jaw locked. He was wearing his impeccably tailored trousers and a crisp, unbuttoned white dress shirt. In his hand, he held a small, glossy hotel receipt.
Paul Rudd, who had arrived at the penthouse twenty minutes prior bearing a stack of agency mail and a highly nervous disposition, froze in the center of the Persian rug. He was currently holding a half-empty, glass bottle of Evian water.
"Elias," Paul squeaked, his voice jumping an octave. "I was parched. I walked up three flights of stairs because the elevator was taking too long. It’s just water."
"It is not ’just water’, Paul," Elias stated, his baritone voice dropping into a dark, terrifying register of absolute corporate mourning. He turned slowly to face his Executive Assistant. "It is tap water sourced from the French Alps, shipped across an ocean, placed in a refrigerated glass box, and subjected to a predatory markup of approximately four thousand percent. You did not hydrate yourself, Paul. You willingly participated in a hospitality scam."
Charlize Theron emerged from the master suite, tying the belt of a plush, oversized hotel robe. She took one look at Elias’s murderous expression, then at the Evian bottle in Paul’s trembling hand, and burst into a loud, unapologetic laugh.
"You’re a multi-millionaire, Elias," Charlize mocked, leaning against the doorframe, her blue eyes sparkling with fierce amusement. "You have two million dollars sitting in a commercial bank account, and you’re about to assassinate your assistant over a beverage."
"Capital preservation is not dictated by net worth, Charlize. It is a moral imperative," Elias countered smoothly, snatching the receipt.
Right on cue, the digital loan shark resting in his cerebral cortex chimed in, compounding his misery.
[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM WARNING: DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DEDUCTION INITIATED.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]
Elias physically winced. The fifty-dollar system tax, combined with Paul’s catastrophic twelve-dollar minibar heist, hit his ledger. His liquid cash settled at exactly $2,087,196.00. The bleeding was microscopic, but to a sociopathic hustler, it felt like an open wound.
"I am deducting the twelve dollars from your phantom salary, Paul," Elias declared, turning his back on the minibar. "Now. Why are you here, disrupting the operational peace of this suite?"
Paul swallowed hard, hastily setting the expensive water bottle down on a side table. He opened his leather portfolio.
"Right. The mail," Paul stammered, pulling out a thick, glossy black envelope embossed with a silver Prancing Horse logo. "This arrived at the P.O. Box yesterday. It’s an exclusive VIP invitation. Ferrari is launching their brand-new grand tourer, the 456 GT. They flew one over from Maranello for a private showcase at a mansion in Bel Air this afternoon. Only top-tier industry executives, A-list actors, and high-fashion media are invited."
Elias took the heavy envelope. He slid a long finger under the flap, revealing the elegant invitation. "And the compensation for our attendance?"
Paul blinked. "Compensation? Elias, it’s a party. They don’t pay you to go to a party. The PR Director for Ferrari North America sent a personal note attached. He said he’d love for you and Charlize to attend. He promised premium exposure in the automotive press and endless free champagne."
The temperature in the penthouse plummeted. Elias’s dark eyes turned into bottomless voids of pure capitalist disgust.
"Exposure," Elias repeated the word as if it were a fatal disease. He tossed the invitation onto the glass coffee table. "They want the visual gravity of a rising Hollywood actress and the face of the defining Calvin Klein campaign of the decade to stand next to their depreciating metal asset, thereby generating millions of dollars in free global advertising for their brand. And their proposed compensation is a glass of fermented grape juice."
"Elias, it’s Ferrari," Paul pleaded. "Everyone is going to be there! Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger... it’s prime networking!"
"It is a parasitic extraction of our brand equity," Elias corrected flawlessly.
He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling, sun-drenched hills of Los Angeles. His mind whirred, processing the logistical layout of a luxury car launch. Free food. Billionaire executives. Desperate PR managers.
A slow, chilling, incredibly dangerous smile curved his lips.
"However," Elias murmured, turning back to face Paul and Charlize. "I am feeling remarkably petty regarding the twelve dollars Paul just stole from me. And I believe the Bel Air mansion will be serving beluga caviar."
Charlize sighed, recognizing the sociopathic glint in his eye. "We aren’t going there to network, are we?"
"No, Charlize," Elias smiled shamelessly. "We are going there to execute a hostage situation."
Four hours later, the Sovereign Media strike team arrived at the sprawling, ultra-modern Bel Air mansion.
Elias was a walking masterpiece of intimidating elegance. He wore a razor-sharp, bespoke black suit, entirely ditching the grunge aesthetic for the afternoon to project pure, old-money dominance. Charlize walked beside him in a sleek, minimalist black cocktail dress that made her look like a lethal, untouchable European heiress.
They bypassed the velvet ropes and the army of valets, stepping into the extravagant launch event.
The mansion was packed. A string quartet played in the background. Waiters carrying silver trays of Dom Pérignon navigated through a sea of incredibly famous, incredibly wealthy individuals.
In the dead center of the massive, marble-floored living room sat the prize: a pristine, silver Ferrari 456 GT, gleaming under specialized studio lighting.
Standing near the front bumper, looking incredibly smug in a tailored Italian suit, was Luca. The PR Director for Ferrari North America. He was currently trying to corral a group of bored-looking Hollywood actors to stand near the car for the swarming paparazzi.
Luca spotted Elias and Charlize entering the room. The PR executive’s eyes lit up with greedy recognition.
"Ah! Elias! Charlize! Bellissimo!" Luca cheered, abandoning the actors and rushing over, his arms spread wide. "You made it! The new king and queen of the Los Angeles aesthetic! Come, come! We need you by the car! The photographers from GQ and Vanity Fair are dying for a shot of you leaning against the hood!"
Elias didn’t offer his hand. He looked down at the PR executive with a smooth, aristocratic smile that offered absolutely zero warmth.
"Luca," Elias purred, his baritone voice effortlessly cutting through the ambient noise of the party. "The vehicle is visually adequate. However, my contractual obligations prohibit me from endorsing automotive brands without formal corporate clearance. We are merely here to enjoy the hospitality."
Luca’s smile faltered. "Endorse? No, no, Elias, it’s not an endorsement! It’s just a picture! A candid moment at a party! It’s great exposure for you!"
"I am allergic to exposure, Luca," Elias replied flawlessly.
Without another word, Elias placed a hand on the small of Charlize’s back and smoothly guided her away from the Ferrari, completely ignoring the desperate PR executive.
Elias didn’t lead her to the bar. He walked directly to the furthest, most isolated corner of the massive room, where a lavish, fifty-foot buffet table was groaning under the weight of imported delicacies.
"Alright," Elias murmured, picking up a small crystal plate and a silver spoon. "Commence the nutritional arbitrage."
Charlize rolled her eyes, but she picked up a plate, expertly loading it with prosciutto and artisan cheeses. Elias meticulously piled an offensive amount of beluga caviar onto a blini.
Across the room, Luca was desperately trying to herd the paparazzi back toward the Ferrari. But the photographers were restless. The car was just a car. They wanted the human element. They wanted the kid who had overthrown the Calvin Klein runway and the girl who was currently the talk of the Warner Bros. lot.
Elias popped a caviar-loaded blini into his mouth. It was time to shift the center of gravity.
He mentally engaged the digital loan shark.
[SYSTEM SHOP ACCESSED.][ACTIVATING: CAMERA MAGNETISM (DURATION: 15 MINUTES)][COST: -15 CP][CURRENT BALANCE: 40 CP]
[CHA-CHING!]
The skill flooded Elias’s physiology. It wasn’t a visible light, but a sudden, inescapable warping of the room’s psychological focal point. The ambient lighting seemed to naturally bend toward the buffet table. Elias’s striking, exotic features and Charlize’s fierce, untouchable beauty were suddenly amplified by a thousand percent. They didn’t just look like guests; they looked like the absolute, undeniable main event of the universe.
One photographer near the Ferrari lowered his camera. He turned his head toward the buffet.
Click-whirrr.
The flash illuminated Elias, who was currently taking a sip of sparkling water with such devastating, bored elegance that it belonged in a museum.
Another photographer turned. Then another.
"Hey! Guys, the car is over here!" Luca shouted, clapping his hands. "We have the CEO ready to make a statement!"
Nobody listened.
Like a flock of birds operating on a hive-mind instinct, the entire swarm of thirty paparazzi abandoned the silver Ferrari. They rushed across the marble floor, pushing past furious Hollywood actors and confused executives, converging entirely on the corner buffet table.
Flashbulbs exploded in a blinding, staccato rhythm.
"Elias! Over here! Give us a look!" "Charlize! Who are you wearing?!" "Elias, is it true you bought a studio on Sunset?!"
Elias didn’t pose. He didn’t smile for the cameras. He simply continued to eat his free caviar with chilling, aristocratic indifference. Charlize leaned against the buffet table, crossing her arms, projecting an aura of lethal, unbothered glamour. The contrast of their absolute boredom amidst the flashing chaos was cinematic gold.
Within three minutes, the entire dynamic of the multi-million-dollar launch party had collapsed.
The guests, seeing the massive media swarm in the corner, naturally assumed that was where the true power resided. A-list actors, directors, and models abandoned the car display and crowded around the buffet, desperately trying to get into the background of Elias’s photographs to absorb his secondhand clout.
The pristine, silver Ferrari 456 GT sat in the center of the room, completely alone, reflecting nothing but the empty marble floor.
Luca, the PR Director, was sweating so profusely his expensive Italian suit was clinging to his back. His career was flashing before his eyes. He had spent two million dollars on this launch event. If tomorrow’s magazines featured fifty pictures of Elias van Kempen eating shrimp and zero pictures of the new car, the executives in Maranello would fire him out of a cannon.
Luca sprinted across the room, violently shoving his way through the wall of paparazzi.
"Elias! Elias, please!" Luca begged, his voice cracking with sheer, unadulterated panic. He stopped in front of the buffet table, looking at the teenager with wild, desperate eyes. "You’re killing me! The press is ignoring the car! You have to come to the center of the room! I’m begging you!"
Elias swallowed a piece of imported lobster tail. He wiped his mouth with a linen napkin, his face a mask of cold, terrifying calculation.
"Ayolah, Elias! Ini Ferrari!" Luca pleaded, clasping his hands together in a prayer-like gesture, completely abandoning his dignity. (Come on, Elias! This is Ferrari!) "Kau hanya perlu berdiri di sampingnya selama lima menit. Kami memberimu sampanye gratis dan eksposur di setiap majalah otomotif bulan ini!" (You only need to stand next to it for five minutes. We are giving you free champagne and exposure in every automotive magazine this month!)
Elias locked his dark, bottomless eyes onto the sweating executive. The flashes of the cameras illuminated his unapologetic, sociopathic smirk.
"Eksposur adalah mata uang yang digunakan oleh pengemis, Luca," Elias stated, his baritone voice a smooth, lethal blade that sliced perfectly through the chaotic noise of the press. (Exposure is a currency used by beggars, Luca.)
He stepped slightly closer to the PR director, his height advantage and dominant aura pressing down on the older man.
"Aku adalah perusahaan yang terdaftar," Elias continued flawlessly, turning the screws. (I am a registered corporation.) "Saat ini, setiap kamera di ruangan ini mengarah ke piring makananku, bukan ke mobil V12-mu." (Right now, every camera in this room is pointing at my dinner plate, not your V12 car.)
Luca looked around. It was true. The photographers were literally ignoring a quarter-million-dollar supercar to take pictures of Elias eating an appetizer.
"What... what do you want?" Luca choked out, a massive sweatdrop rolling off his nose.
Elias reached into his tailored suit jacket. He pulled out a single, folded piece of paper—a legally binding Sovereign Media Appearance Contract he had drafted that morning at the motel. He slapped it onto the buffet table, right next to the ice sculpture.
"Jika kau ingin meminjam gravitasiku untuk menyelamatkan peluncuran produkmu," Elias smiled, a dark, terrifying expression of pure greed, "biayanya adalah seratus lima puluh ribu dolar." (If you want to borrow my gravity to save your product launch, the cost is one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.)
"A hundred and fifty thousand dollars?!" Luca shrieked, his voice echoing over the flashbulbs. "For five minutes?! Are you out of your mind?!"
"Jangan khawatir," Elias murmured, picking up his silver spoon and taking another bite of caviar. (I will let you deduct the cost of the caviar from my bill. Sign it, Luca. Or I will walk out of that door right now, and the entire press corps in this room will follow me to the parking lot.)
Luca stared at the contract. He stared at the empty Ferrari.
He was trapped. It was a flawless, brutal hostage situation. The marketing budget for the event had an emergency contingency fund specifically for catastrophic failures. This qualified.
With a tragic, pathetic whimper of a man whose ego had been entirely annihilated, Luca pulled a gold pen from his pocket. He violently scribbled his signature across the bottom of Elias’s extortion document, legally binding Ferrari North America’s marketing department to the fee.
"Done," Luca hissed, tossing the pen onto the table. "Now get over there and pose!"
Elias smoothly retrieved the contract, slipping it into his breast pocket. He turned to Charlize, offering her his arm with impeccable aristocratic grace.
"Shall we go look at the automobile, Ms. Theron?" Elias asked pleasantly.
"We certainly should, Mr. van Kempen," Charlize smirked, taking his arm.
Elias and Charlize walked away from the buffet.
Instantly, the massive swarm of paparazzi broke like a wave and followed them. Elias glided to the center of the room, stopping directly in front of the silver Ferrari 456 GT. He didn’t touch the car. He didn’t smile. He leaned against the front fender with the brooding, dangerous intensity of an icon, with Charlize standing fiercely beside him.
The cameras erupted in a blinding storm of light.
For exactly five minutes, Elias gave them absolute perfection. He elevated the car from a piece of machinery to an indispensable accessory of the elite.
At four minutes and fifty-nine seconds, Elias checked his vintage Rolex.
"Time is up," Elias declared.
He turned his back on the cameras, took Charlize by the hand, and walked directly toward the exit, completely ignoring Luca, the car, and the screaming photographers begging for one more shot.
As the heavy mansion doors closed behind them, blocking out the noise, a deafening, golden symphony erupted in Elias’s cerebral cortex.
[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: THE 15-MINUTE EXTORTION HACK EXECUTED WITH MAXIMUM SOCIOPATHY!][EVALUATION: YOU REFUSED TO WORK FOR EXPOSURE, HIJACKED A MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR LAUNCH, AND HELD A BRAND HOSTAGE OVER A BUFFET TABLE. Elias stepped out into the warm Los Angeles evening. His CP had recovered to a functional 50.
Paul Rudd was waiting by the rusted Honda Civic down the street, looking terrified. "Did they kick you out? Did you eat too much shrimp?"
"No, Paul," Elias murmured, patting his breast pocket where the $150,000 contract rested securely. "I merely corrected the PR department’s budget allocation. Let’s go home."
