Chapter 127: Chapter 52: The Change of the Kind Girl with Buns
"Just plug it in and that’s it?" Yu Xian was taken aback. He thought this kind of thing was just something made up for movies.
"Yes, it’ll only take a few minutes..." Wen Xiao’s voice on the other end of the line hitched for a second.
"The whole process doesn’t require any manual clicks, and there won’t be any pop-ups on the screen."
"That’s great!" Yu Xian exclaimed in admiration.
"This makes Old Shi’s job much simpler. He just has to find a chance to plug in the USB drive, and no one will be the wiser. Is it difficult to make? How long will it take?"
"I’ve studied similar automated deployment scripts before. I can just modify one of those. It won’t be too complicated. Once I’m done writing it, I’ll send you the image file directly. You can just have Shi Zuozhou burn it onto a USB drive."
"Okay, thank you for your hard work," Yu Xian said sincerely.
"I knew you’d have a solution. You’re amazing."
"Really? I’ll... I’ll try even harder," Wen Xiao mumbled softly on the other end of the line.
Yu Xian hung up and stared at his phone, his brow tightly furrowed.
He wasn’t sure what the problem was, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that Wen Xiao’s personality seemed a little different.
’The Wen Xiao from before had a bit of a temper, didn’t she? She used to get mad if I forgot to reply to her messages.’
’But today, I lost control of my emotions and had such a terrible attitude, so why didn’t she react at all?’
’Changed?’
A terrifying thought rose in his mind. That "changed" the families of the smiling suicide victims mentioned... ’it couldn’t be...’
’...referring to this kind of change, could it?’
But Wen Xiao’s change didn’t seem to have reached that extent. He wondered if he was just overthinking things. He would just have to find a chance to ask her about it later.
Just then, he heard the sound of a key turning in the lock of the security door.
"Xiaoxian, are you in your room? Come out and eat."
Yu Xian closed his laptop and walked out of the study. The lights in the living room were already on.
Yu Zhengze was standing at the dining table, taking takeout containers out of a plastic bag one by one.
Kung Pao chicken, garlic-stir-fried lettuce, two servings of rice, and a large, steaming bowl of pork rib soup.
"You’re back, cousin." Yu Xian went over to help his cousin set the table.
"Yeah, things have quieted down a bit, so I came back early." Yu Zhengze took off his jacket and tossed it casually onto the sofa.
"I bought some stir-fry. It’s been storming these past few days, so I haven’t been able to look after you."
The two of them sat down facing each other, eating their meal in silence.
His cousin ate quickly, barely touching the side dishes as he shoveled down his rice.
"By the way, Xiaoxian," Yu Zhengze said, putting down his chopsticks and asking casually,
"Have you been... hanging out with Dr. Wen’s sister a lot lately?"
Yu Xian’s hand trembled as he was reaching for some food, and his heart skipped a beat.
’Wen Xiao?’
’Why would my cousin suddenly ask about this?’
’It couldn’t be... I just annoyed her sister today, and she’s already run to my cousin to complain tonight, has she?’
’Or... did they find out that Wen Xiao peeked at her medical records?’
Yu Xian put down his chopsticks and said calmly,
"Oh, Wen Xiao? Yes, we’re schoolmates. We’re working on some projects together."
He asked tentatively,
"What’s wrong, cousin? Is something the matter?"
Yu Zhengze didn’t look at him, simply taking out a pack of cigarettes.
"It’s nothing. I just happened to run into Dr. Wen today, and we chatted for a bit. Did you tell Wen Xiao about our relationship?"
"It came up by chance while we were chatting last weekend," Yu Xian said casually.
"Mm."
He was absent-minded for the rest of the meal.
After dinner, Yu Xian cleared the table and washed up. He returned to the spare bedroom, closed the door, and lay down on the bed.
He’d been living at his cousin’s place for two weeks now, though it felt like no time at all.
In those two weeks, many things had happened out in the raging storm, and this temporary safe harbor had offered him a great deal of warmth and peace of mind.
’But living here, I’m still causing my cousin some trouble. He’s so busy, yet he always remembers to bring food back for me.’
’And then there’s that fortune... "a curse to one’s kin"...’
’Should I move out?’ Yu Xian wondered, calculating the time.
He looked around the small but cozy room, a feeling of reluctance welling up inside him.
’Senior Sister Yiyi is still staying at my apartment, so it looks like my only option is to go back to the dorms.’
Tomorrow was Monday, the day classes were set to resume for the whole university.
If the "Rabbit Hole" plan was to be carried out successfully, he had to return to the eye of the storm at the university.
Only there could he get firsthand information on any developments and coordinate with Wen Xiao and the others.
"I hope... everything goes smoothly."
