Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner

Chapter 825: A name that spreads like wildfire

Noah closed the distance fast, Void Striders burning violet beneath him, sprinting flat out across the swamp floor while Rino sailed overhead on the tail end of his leap, still arcing down out of the sky toward the water beyond the treeline.

"Now!" Noah called, and tossed Hibanna up ahead of him, her trident already coming around in a wide slash aimed to catch Rino’s flank on the way down.

It never landed.

Something shifted at the back of Rino’s skull, a third eye splitting open beneath a ridge of bone nobody would have guessed was there, and the moment Hibanna’s trident closed the last few feet, a slab of hard grey shell erupted from between his shoulder blades and swung into the strike’s path.

The impact threw her sideways through open air, off her arc entirely, spinning.

"Shit—"

Noah changed direction mid-sprint, watching her fall, cutting the angle hard, and closed the gap just in time to catch her before she hit the ground wrong.

"You okay, Princess?"

Hibanna blinked hard, one hand pressed to her ribs, breath coming short. "Fine."

Noah set her down, already turning back toward Rino, who’d used the interruption to hit the ground running.

Noah gave chase.

Rino cut hard left the second Noah’s angle shifted to intercept, tearing through a stand of trees like they weren’t there, and Noah adjusted with him, matching the turn a half step behind, close enough now that he could hear the creature’s breath working underneath the pounding of six-clawed feet on packed earth.

He closed the last of the gap in a single leap, cleared the top of Rino’s skull in a tight front flip, and brought Excaliburn down in a swing meant to open him from collarbone to hip on the way past.

The shell met the blade before Noah’s feet found the ground again. Grey plating erupted across Rino’s chest, absorbed the strike, cracked, and disintegrated into fine dust.

A new one formed in its place before the dust had finished settling.

Not a mark left behind anywhere. Just a fresh shell where the old one had been, whole, like it had simply always been there.

Noah landed, readjusted his stance, breathing controlled.

"You know me," he said. "Only fair I know you back before I kill you."

Rino’s head swung toward him, lips peeling back off teeth built for tearing rather than talking, three eyes fixing on Noah with something that wasn’t quite curiosity and wasn’t quite hate, more like the particular attention a predator gave to prey that had already bitten it once before.

"I know you well, Eclipse." The voice came out low, guttural, something feral running underneath every syllable like the words themselves were an effort against instinct. "You have made yourself a thorn in the side of my kind. Two of our strongest, gone, by your hand alone." He circled, slow, deliberate, claws dragging shallow furrows around trees still left standing in close proximity. "You think this makes you strong. It does not. It makes you fortunate. Harbingers are strength. Humans are weakness wearing armor. Whatever you have taken from us, you will lose it all in time. Every effort you make will end in futility."

"That’s a lot of confidence for something hiding behind a shell," Noah said.

Rino’s growl deepened into something that might have been a laugh.

"My name is Rino," he said. "I did not expect to meet you here. I am not the one built to end you." His eyes narrowed. "But I will enjoy proving you wrong regardless."

Noah’s mouth curved. "Well, Rino. Until whoever’s built for that job actually shows up, I’ve got other things to do." He raised his free hand, palm flattening. "So right about now, I’m going to have to kill you."

He exploded forward.

THOOOM!!

THOOOM!!

THOOOM!!

Void Barrage tore from his palm in three concentrated bursts, and Rino wove through the first two, the fluidity of it wrong for something his size, and caught the third on his leg, a shell erupting there in an instant, absorbing the erasure and crumbling to dust before reforming clean a heartbeat later.

Noah didn’t let the recovery breathe. He closed the distance the shell had bought Rino and drove a palm strike toward the joint of his shoulder, aiming to disable rather than kill this time, testing.

A shell met that too, an eighth of a second before contact.

’Alright,’ Noah thought, circling now, watching for the pattern underneath the pattern. ’Not just a chest thing. Anywhere. Whatever tags it, wherever it’s about to land, that thing puts a shell there first.’

He thought back through the file in his head, the one he’d been building for years now without meaning to. Widow had been fast, precise, the first of her kind humanity had ever crossed paths with. Kruel had been raw dominance, strength enough that numbers stopped mattering. Xallon, the one Lucas fought on Sirius Prime, cocky and starving for violence in a way that made him sloppy in exactly the places that got him killed.

’Every horn past two starts showing something,’ Noah thought. ’A specialty. This one’s specialty is me.’

Not brute force. Not speed for its own sake. A hard counter, purpose built, to the exact thing Noah relied on most.

"The shield regenerates fast," Noah muttered, watching the fresh plate settle over Rino’s shoulder without a seam showing. "And it keeps coming back. Doesn’t matter how many times I erase it."

He charged, and Rino met the charge instead of retreating from it, the two of them closing the last stretch of ground together.

BOOM!!

THOOOM!!

BOOM!!

Sword, then fist, then a follow-up palm strike, each one landing exactly where Noah aimed, and each one meeting a fresh shell a half second before contact, absorbing the erasure and crumbling away in the same breath. Rino gave ground under the pressure but didn’t fall, didn’t even stagger, planting his back foot and using the last impact’s momentum to swing a claw toward Noah’s ribs on the return.

Noah dropped under it, felt the wind of the swing pass over his shoulder, and used the low position to slam his palm flat against the ground.

Entropy poured out of it.

The soil beneath Rino’s feet began to rot, grass browning and folding in on itself in a widening ring, roots dissolving into dark sludge, the decay spreading outward in a slow creeping wave toward where Rino stood. Rino’s third eye caught it, and for the first time something like real caution crossed his features, claws digging in as he backpedaled from ground that no longer wanted to hold him.

Noah didn’t let him get comfortable.

He raised both hands and four rifts tore open around Rino in a rough diamond, void-dark and humming, and fired a bolt of erasure into the nearest one before Rino had finished retreating from the rot.

The bolt fed through the rift and emerged a half second later from the one directly opposite Rino’s blind side, full speed, no warning, and three more followed it out of the remaining rifts in the same breath, converging on him from four directions at once with nowhere left to retreat that the rotting ground hadn’t already claimed.

Rino’s whole body seized. Shells erupted everywhere at once, plate after plate blooming across every inch of him in overlapping layers, and the barrage hit home in a chain of dull impacts, each one shattering a shell into dust that scattered and reformed in the space of a blink.

He weathered it. Barely, breathing hard through it, but he weathered it.

Noah blinked.

Space folded around him and he reappeared directly behind Rino mid-recovery, sword already swinging for the base of his neck, the one place that hadn’t had time to grow a shell yet.

Rino spun to meet it anyway, faster than his size should’ve allowed, and a shell was already there waiting, forming in the fraction of a second between Noah’s reappearance and his strike landing, like the creature’s own instincts had clocked exactly where the next hit was coming from before Noah’s own body had finished committing to the motion.

The shell shattered. A new one grew.

Noah landed back on his feet and exhaled hard, chest rising, sweat cutting through the grime on his jaw for the first time all fight.

’It’s not reacting to the attack,’ he thought slowly, watching Rino reset into a low stance. ’It’s reacting to me. To wherever I’m about to be. That’s not defense. It looks a lot like prediction.’

Rino surged forward before the thought finished, throwing a punch with a speed that belied his size, and Noah slipped it, weaving just enough to let it pass his shoulder, already lining up a VPT strike meant to drill through the joint of Rino’s elbow before the follow-up arrived.

A shell formed there first, catching the strike whole.

Rino threw another, Noah slipping that one too and aiming low for the tendon behind his knee, another shell meeting it in the same instant. A third punch came off the back of the second without pause, then a fourth, Rino’s fists coming faster now, and every single time Noah found the angle, found the perfect precise point that should have ended the exchange, a shell was already waiting, forming a half breath before impact like Rino had eyes Noah hadn’t counted yet, cataloguing every twitch of muscle before Noah’s body had finished committing.

Noah broke off, circling, breathing controlled but audible now.

"Human weakness," Rino said, watching him retreat, something satisfied curling into the words. "You strike and strike and accomplish nothing. This is what I told you. Futility."

"Maybe," Noah said. "Or maybe I’ve just got better things to do."

He glanced past Rino’s shoulder, toward the mountain rising dark against the smoke-heavy sky, and made his decision.

"I don’t have time to figure you out today, Rino. But I’m not leaving you standing here either." He raised one hand, fingers pointing past Rino and at the mountain "Activate Reaper’s Harvest. Target: Kruel."

[Reaper’s Harvest activated]

[Summoning: Kruel]

A violet glow bloomed in the air a few feet away, deepening, folding into a shape that grew until it towered a full ten feet, four horns crowning a skull built for exactly the kind of violence that name had once meant across an entire eastern sector, its outline flickering faint at the edges but its bulk unmistakably, undeniably him.

Rino went utterly still, all three eyes seemingly fixed on the construct. Yes, even the one behind his neck.

"I have to go," Noah said, already turning toward the treeline, holding Excaliburn loosely at his side. "But he’ll keep you company."

He walked past the construct without slowing.

"Make sure your friend doesn’t leave alive." Noah said to Kruel as he walked past the construct.

The Kruel construct’s head swung toward Rino, and something low and guttural rolled out of its chest, not quite a word, not quite anything Rino’s own instincts had a name for, but close enough to a memory that Rino took an involuntary step back before catching himself.

Noah kept walking, the sound of impact starting up behind him a few seconds later, ground shaking under the weight of it, Rino’s voice cutting through once in something that might have been a snarl or might have been genuine alarm.

He didn’t turn around to check which.

Hibanna caught up to him at the treeline, favoring one side slightly but moving under her own power, trident held loose at her hip.

"You’re just leaving it," she said, glancing back at the fight still raging behind them.

"Kruel’s handling it," Noah said. "Or a piece of him is, anyway. Close enough."

She studied him for a long moment, something working behind her expression that hadn’t quite settled into words yet.

"That thing," she said finally. "Is that truly him? The one you killed? The coalition got word of a three horn that caused havoc across Earth’s sector. Is that the one?"

"A construct," Noah said. "Void copy, built from something I’ve personally taken down. Doesn’t get tired, doesn’t feel pain, fights exactly the way the real one did." He glanced sideways at her. "Should keep Rino busy long enough for us to deal with whatever’s actually waiting up on that mountain."

Hibanna’s jaw tightened, but she didn’t argue, falling into step beside him as the ground began to slope upward, stone replacing soil beneath their boots, the mountain rising ahead of them dark and silent against a sky still thick with smoke from the pods still scattered burning across the swamp behind them.

A slim transport craft cut low over the treeline and dropped beside Hibanna in a tight arc, one of her soldiers leaning off it before it had fully settled, trident still in hand.

"Princess. The water line is holding, no breach yet, but command wants to know your position, and—" his eyes caught the construct towering over Rino a few dozen meters off, and he went rigid. "That is a four horn."

"It is not," Hibanna said, already turning back toward the mountain. "Leave it be. It belongs to him." A nod toward Noah’s retreating back. "Pass word to everyone on the line. Any harbinger with that coloring, off-color, is left alone. Nothing touches it. Focus everything on the water. Nothing gets past it."

The soldier hesitated a beat too long, still staring at the construct’s shimmer.

"Go," Hibanna said, sharper this time.

He went.
