Raising Yanderes to save the world

Chapter 266: Ch 265: Envy of Gods

It was a well-known fact that there were several gods responsible for overseeing the universe, but only a handful oversaw a world.

And when a new world was created, a meeting of gods was called to decide who would become the chief god of that new world.

A chief god was an enviable position coveted by many. And there was only one reason behind it—the power that came with worship.

To gods who needed neither food nor magic, the only form of sustenance and a way of becoming more powerful was their followers’ faith. The more they had, the stronger they would get.

And a newly crafted world was the source of untapped power. Its people were still too innocent and unknowing to be easily influenced by anything. That was why all gods wanted to occupy the position of the chief god of a new world.

Goddess Aria Solwyn was no different.

She was a newly born goddess with no divinity under her name. All she had was a form that existed and a name that came with her birth. But she wanted...no, needed more if she were to make her existence known.

For that very purpose, she used all her power in order to stand out during the selection, and when the Creator’s eyes looked over her, she knew that she had succeeded in showing her desperation.

[The one who will govern this new world will be Aria.]

Everyone looked at her with envy, but Aria was too busy to notice their looks. She had only one purpose in her life, and that was to stay alive long enough to become a powerful goddess.

So when the chance came, she took it with open arms.

She settled down in the new world where humans were just starting to civilize, and she showed them the way that things needed to be.

No one needed to teach her this stuff since it was embedded into her being as a goddess.

But what she did not know were the other things that came with being a goddess. And that was the fact that she had to defend her territory from other gods who were jealous of her achievements.

And there were a lot of older gods who envied her because, unlike her, they never got a territory.

They were born, only to be abandoned by their creator with no way to gain their power.

And that resentment slowly grew more and more toward her, a rookie, until it was enough to form a curse.

...

/Gods are petty creatures. Humans think of them as all-knowing and all-loving beings, but that cannot be further from the truth. They are petty, jealous, but most importantly, they are known to cause trouble./

/I guess that means that they are not that far off from humans./

The goddess concluded, but Kael did not fully agree with her. A human’s nature could change, but could a god’s change? It seemed impossible.

A human was formed by their circumstances and could grow up, but a god was born into a state, and they existed in that state for their whole life...at least, that was what the scriptures said. Kael had never tried to verify it.

Still, his instincts were telling him that he was right.

/Ah, I can tell what you are thinking! You think that gods cannot change once they are born, right? You are both right and wrong. A god is born in the perfect state of being, which means that their nature cannot be changed. However, there is a loophole around this./

The corruption whispered, and Kael turned his attention toward her.

"Is that so?"

Kael asked, and the corruption replied without missing a beat.

/Once a god has been given a world to govern, their nature becomes tied to that world. And the people that make up the god’s faith can start influencing them. For example, if a god has a primary world where hunger is prominent, they need to help with it first. Otherwise, they start to feel hungry as well./

/Something similar ended up happening in this case as well. Can you guess what?/

The corruption asked with a giggle in its voice, and Kael hesitated to answer that question. He had a feeling that it was a trap...

Still, staying quiet also did not sit well with him...

/Don’t worry. I can tell that you reached an answer, but you do not want to tell me. So I will answer it for you. It’s simple—the people of this world changed. But it was not a natural change. Instead, it was the resentment of the other gods that made them change./

Kael had no idea what he could say next to ease the situation. So he remained quiet and allowed the corruption to continue speaking.

/The envy of other gods quickly changed this world, and by the time that innocent goddess knew what was happening, it was too late. The world had already been swallowed by corruption, and it had changed. The goddess no longer had control./

Kael carefully listened to these words, but he knew that there was more to this story. He refused to believe that this was all he was going to get.

And the corruption giggled once it noticed that it had Kael’s attention.

/Are you worried about that useless goddess? There is no need to do that. After all, that goddess signed up for it when she agreed to take on the role of looking after this world. If she was so incompetent, then she should have given up her position, but she held on to it./

"But the world also survived all this time, right? Despite the corruption, the fact that we were all born and got to live was also due to the will of that goddess, right? Then she did her job."

Kael told the corruption, and it went quiet.

But then it started to giggle once more, and Kael felt like he was missing something important. But he had no idea what.
