Cas looked surprised and answered,

「Stevie? I heard her older brother was in the subjugation squad and died. So I haven’t seen her at all since this afternoon. She won’t be coming for night service, so please rest easy tonight.」

「You’re not coming in her place?」

I only meant it as a joke, but Cas took it seriously.

「W-What are you saaaaying!? I won’t do something like that ever again!!」

She left the room in a huff, practically fuming. I should have asked who was on night duty tonight.

Since no one came, I changed clothes by myself and sat alone on the bed. If no one’s coming, then that’s that. It was probably bedtime, but I wasn’t sleepy and my mood was still gloomy, so I climbed up to the roof once more.

There was no moon tonight, only twinkling stars. The sky felt so high. There’s a saying about stars raining down, and I could really feel it. I had never seen so many stars in my previous life. They were beautiful. I didn’t feel like going to look at Michelle’s room tonight. I just lay down on the roof and gazed at the stars.

「Lord Robby...」

Hearing a voice, I turned and saw Stevie standing there. She had actually come. What was she doing up here?

「Stevie, what are you doing in a place like this? Are you okay? I was worried about you.」

Stevie just stared at me without saying anything. She was biting her lip hard. Her clenched fists were trembling.

I stood up and reached out.

「Stevie...」

The moment I did, Stevie threw herself into my arms. Since we were about the same height, she couldn’t bury her face in my chest. Our faces were right next to each other. She burst into loud sobs. Even though she was wailing "Uweeeh~" and "Uwaaaah~", because we were on the roof, it didn’t seem like anyone else could hear. All the windows in the dormitory remained dark; no lights came on.

All I could do was gently stroke the head of the sobbing Stevie. Crying wouldn’t solve anything, and no matter what I did, it wouldn’t lessen her sadness. Still, I held her back and stroked her hair.

Her crying gradually turned into hiccup-like sobs.

「Stevie, have you calmed down a little?」

That was the wrong thing to ask.

With that cry, she hugged me with all her strength. I couldn’t withstand the force and fell backwards. We were on the roof — so we rolled together across it! We tumbled and tumbled until we finally reached the edge and were thrown into the air.
