Chapter 682: Chapter 682: The First Wife Sold by Her Husband 28

"Mom, I’m going to exchange some more eggs, okay? We can have scrambled eggs with wood ear mushrooms," Yuan Chun said as she returned to the house, grabbed a vegetable basket, and Wang Mu handed her some change, "Take this, for the next few days, you’re in charge of buying groceries."

"Mom, I have money."

"Alright, you’re building a house, and I don’t have much to give you, but I can cover groceries with this small amount."

"Mom, you’re the best."

Yuan Chun chuckled and put the money into her pocket.

After buying tofu, Yuan Chun walked around the Tiangou River. When she returned, there were a few fish over two pounds each in her vegetable basket.

Wang Mu’s eyes widened when she saw the fish, "Yuan Chun, where did you get these fish? They’re still alive."

"Mom, I took a stroll in the fields and happened upon a spot where some fish were trapped in a paddy trench. I scooped them up, just in time for lunch to make braised fish."

Wang Mu didn’t doubt her daughter’s words; she just thought her daughter was lucky, "It hasn’t rained since the harvest; the water in many trenches is drying up. This afternoon, let’s walk around more and see if there are any more fish to catch."

Yuan Chun: "..."

Wang Mu added, "These fish are quite big; let’s cook two for lunch and save the other two for your brother and sister-in-law when they come home tonight."

"Whatever you want, Mom. If we catch more fish this afternoon, we’ll save them for lunch tomorrow."

Seems like she’ll have to release a few big fish later this afternoon.

Uncle Wu is helping her build the house; she can’t serve boiled cabbage and shredded potatoes every day. They’ve got to have some meat dishes. Xiao Wa Village isn’t close to mountains but near water, that’s why she brought out fish, not daring to bring out wild chickens or rabbits.

Wang Mu is good at cooking. She cut the two fish into pieces and braised them with two blocks of tofu, while the cabbage was stewed with vermicelli. Wang Mu also mixed a side dish of dried wild vegetables, stir-fried some peanuts, and cooked a big pot of pumpkin soup.

In the winter month in Northeast, the vegetable fields are empty, so there are no fresh veggies. Every household eats what’s stored in the cellar – cabbage, potatoes, and pumpkins. In another month or two, these won’t be available, and they’ll be eating pickled vegetables and sauerkraut made from preserved cabbage every meal.

After lunch, Yuan Chun swiftly helped Wang Mu clean up the dishes, and together they took a group of little ones to the paddy trench.

Yuan Chun secretly used her spiritual power to release five grass carp weighing over three pounds.

The fish, suddenly in a new environment but still in the muddy trench, swished their tails in a frenzy, making splashing noises.

Wang Mu exclaimed with surprise, "There sounds like fish ahead in the trench; I’ll go take a look. Yuan Chun, take your time with Zhenhua and the others, don’t fall into the trench."

Without waiting for her daughter to respond, Wang Mu followed the sound. She saw the big fish in the trench and joyfully waved to Yuan Chun, "Yuan Chun, bring the basket."

"Coming, Mom."

The trench was shallow; by crouching beside it, one could easily grab the fish.

It’s the first time Wang Mu saw such big fish in the trench – she was overjoyed, "Yuan Chun, you’re really lucky. Four fish in the morning, five in the afternoon; we won’t have to worry about tomorrow’s meals."

"Mom, I’ll go to town the morning after tomorrow to buy groceries, see if the supply and marketing cooperatives have tomatoes and eggplants."

"They’re frostbitten, where would you find eggplants? If you want tomatoes, your Third Granny has quite a few stored in her cellar; I’ll ask her for some tomorrow."

Wang Mu paused and added, "The house still needs more than half a month to complete, we’ll need to provide food for that period. Our home surely doesn’t have enough vegetables; visiting the town isn’t a bad idea. Go early and buy bones or offal that don’t require meat coupons; we have plenty of dried peppers at home to spice up the pork offal."
