Chapter 3229: Nothing but Fair-Weather Friends
Lianqiao was a blunt person. She always said whatever was on her mind in front of Ning Shu.
Ning Shu rolled her eyes. Wasn’t she worried about hurting her feelings?
After washing her hands, Ning Shu asked, “So what do you want me to do?”
“Those people are nothing but fair-weather friends. When you were in favor, they were all flattery and smiles. Now they’ve turned around and are talking behind your back. Absolutely despicable,” Lianqiao said as she used a handkerchief to dry Ning Shu’s hands.
Ning Shu replied, “Lianqiao, from now on, don’t tell me about these things. What others say has nothing to do with us.”
She didn’t care personally, but she worried Su Zhuru might take these things to heart if she came back and heard them.
Then again, Su Zhuru had perished in a brothel, living her final days selling smiles. This kind of blow probably wouldn’t mean much to her anymore.
“Yes, Miss.. I’ll remember that. I won’t trouble you with this kind of upsetting talk again,” Lianqiao said. She was biting her lip, and her voice was thick with tears.
“Mm. Have there been any updates from the Yin family? Did any beggar kids come by with news?” Ning Shu shifted the topic.
Lianqiao shook her head. “No one’s really out on the streets right now, and no street urchins have brought any messages.”“I see. Then let’s go give the old madame a massage.”
Ning Shu made her way to the old madame’s courtyard to massage her and quietly channelled a bit of spiritual energy into her body.
The old madame had treated her fairly well. It was a form of protection for Su Zhuru if she stayed alive.
Whenever she had time, Ning Shu would prepare medicinal meals for the old madame. She’d also bring some over to Madame Rongguo. As for Marquis Xuanping, he was out of the question. He wasn’t getting any.
Even if she did bring something to him, the marquis would only get irritated at the sight of her. So why go out of her way to be disliked?
She also rummaged through the ancestral hall, just for some peace of mind.
In the end, as long as the matter was resolved, that was all that mattered. The process wasn’t important.
Lately, meals had been light and plain because the emperor had passed away, and the crown prince, along with several other imperial princes, had also died.
During a national mourning period, weddings and celebrations were forbidden. Even music and dancing were banned. Business at the brothels had dropped significantly.
Especially now, with the political situation so tense, no one dared to step out of line.
The emperor and his sons were buried in the imperial mausoleum, but Zhuo Cheran and Prince Xin didn’t receive such honor.
Traitors and rebels only deserved to be tossed into mass graves.
Zhuo Cheran’s corpse was strung up on the city wall, exposed to the sun and rain.
In the summer heat, flies buzzed incessantly around his body.
Anyone who passed by could smell the nauseating stench wafting from it.
Corpse oil even dripped onto the ground beneath him.
Yin Qing stared up at Zhuo Cheran’s hanging body. Her expression was filled with sorrow. When she turned her head, she saw Ning Shu seated inside her palanquin chair.
Their eyes met.
Yin Qing couldn’t pretend she hadn’t seen her. She walked over and gave a respectful bow. “Miss Su.”
Ning Shu stepped down from the sedan chair with Lianqiao’s support and returned the greeting. “Miss Yin.”
“Did you come to see him too?” Yin Qing asked, gazing at the corpse swaying desolately on the wall.
“I suppose you could say that,” Ning Shu replied.
“It’s not easy for women to survive. He’s gone now. What matters is the living,” she added.
Yin Qing nodded. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears, and her face was etched with fatigue and sorrow as she said, “You’re right.”
Yin Qing dabbed the corner of her eye with a handkerchief, then said apologetically, “I’ve always wanted to apologize to you. Part of the reason your engagement to Zhuo Cheran was called off was because of me.”
Ning Shu didn’t seem to mind. “Life is unpredictable. Maybe it felt like a loss back then, but now, it ended up being something that’s saved me from getting dragged into a rebellion.”
She figured Yin Qing was a clever woman. Zhuo Cheran was dead now, and there was nothing left to fight over between them.
Besides, their two families weren’t on equal footing. The Yin family was just a modest household.
In a city like the capital, where you could throw a brick and hit three high-ranking officials, they were barely noticeable.
The Yin family was all too easy to deal with.
