Chapter 1395: Chapter 417: The Catcher’s Theory

Chapter 417[The Catcher’s Theory]

On the Interstate highway, a gray pickup truck was speeding along.

The driver was Chen Yan, while Wu and his daughter Angie sat in the back seat. Little Angie had already fallen asleep, half-closed eyes, her head tilted to one side.

Wu, having just recovered from an injury, was low on energy. Though awake, he had little desire to talk and simply gazed quietly at the scenery outside the window.

Chen Yan drove calmly, tuning the car radio to listen to the broadcast.

The broadcast was discussing the latest hot topics in social news, like the ramblings of the crazy old man in the White House and what nonsense he was bragging about winning.

Of course, the hottest topic was still the mysterious death of the Mayor of New York.

This unsolved case has sparked widespread discussion across the nation.

The currently most favored theory comes from an allegedly police-organized expert panel, which, after countless site inspections and countless meetings, reached a speculation:

The murderer must have driven a heavy truck near the hospital at night. And inside the heavy truck, there was definitely a "large projectile device" equipped.

Only then could a small car, weighing more than two tons, be catapulted to the height of the fourth floor, crash through the window, and kill the Mayor.

This speculation barely explains where the airborne car came from.

And with the heavy truck serving as the vehicle for the projectile device, the murderer could immediately drive away after committing the crime, making the case look like a mystery beyond human understanding...

The radio also featured some so-called expert who was elaborating endlessly on his views, allegedly a physics teacher from some university, and seriously calculating just how much thrust would be needed to launch a two-ton car up to the fourth floor...

Chen Yan, after listening, kept rolling his eyes, and then just switched the station, hearing country music being played on the radio, which made him nod with satisfaction.

"Actually, I’m curious too."

Sitting in the back, Wu suddenly spoke up.

Chen Yan responded with a "Hmm": "What?"

"How did you do it? How did the car fly up to the fourth floor?"

"Threw it up there with my bare hands." Chen Yan replied calmly, keeping his eyes on the road ahead.

Wu grimaced but, seeing Chen Yan’s expression, refrained from asking further and instead casually inquired, "Where are we now?"

"Two hours ago we crossed the state border into Pennsylvania." Chen Yan said, placing one hand on the steering wheel, lowering the window slightly to let in the breeze.

"Do you want me to take a turn driving? You’ve been driving all the way, I could relieve you for a rest."

Chen Yan shook his head: "Better not, you’re not fully recovered yet. I don’t want to entrust the lives of everyone in this car to someone weak."

Wu sighed, pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and silently took a couple of puffs.

"What, missing the restaurants in New York?" Chen Yan chuckled.

"No." Wu looked very calm, speaking with a sense of resignation: "Just leaving temporarily to avoid the spotlight. Once the Mayor’s death blows over, if I’m not implicated, I can bring Angie back."

"It should be fine." Chen Yan politely offered some comfort: "With the Mayor dead, his subordinates are probably all in chaos, they wouldn’t bother pursuing that box."

Chen Yan, feeling reminded of something, suddenly asked: "Was the other target dealt with? That rich second generation guy who took Angie to the party, the one named Murray."

"Already taken care of, handled it before I attempted the Mayor’s assassination. Don’t worry, I did it cleanly. Got into his house and injected him with a large dose of drugs, his body’s discovery will appear after several days, even if examined, they’ll only conclude that the brat overdosed himself."

Chen Yan shook his head: "Killing him wasn’t a smart move because... if it were just about the box or the Mayor’s assassination, perhaps it wouldn’t trace back to your family. But with Murray dead, they might start suspecting you.

After all, it was Murray who brought your daughter to that party."

"He tried to harm my daughter and offered her like a gift to that scumbag, so he had to die."

The "scumbag" Wu referred to was the guy in pajamas at the party, though he was already dead—Wu had missed killing the Mayor on his first attempt but managed to take out both the pajama guy and a few others.

Chen Yan said nothing more, anyway, the rest was none of his business—as per his deal with Wu, after killing the Mayor, his task was to escort Wu and his daughter out of New York to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Once there, he was free to leave.

When leaving his home in New York, Wu pried open a floorboard in the bedroom in front of Chen Yan, retrieving a metal candy box from beneath. Inside the candy box was a piece of cloth—treated with insect repellent and preservative, and wrapped within was a booklet.

The booklet was chiselled out of stone, with writing on it, though not carved, but "written" using some special technique, appearing to seep into the surface of the jade-like stone.

It was a very crude "Jade Scroll," or rather, "Jade Book."
