Chapter 1357: Chapter 405: [Speculation]_2

In some places, there were homeless people lining both sides of the street. In these poor neighborhoods, cops rarely came by.

Among the homeless, there were also plenty of people whose fate was already hanging by a thread.

But whether they really deserved it or not, Chen Yan couldn’t be sure.

There was a time he’d parked his car by the roadside, then gotten out to wander around for a bit.

At one street corner, he saw two young Brother Ni obviously dealing drugs. They were being very cautious about it, and before Chen Yan could get close, a burly black guy came over and blocked his way, telling him to get lost.

Chen Yan saw someone drive past that intersection, stop, roll down the window, and quickly shove a wad of cash into the hands of one of the young Brother Ni. The young Brother Ni then passed over a little plastic bag about the size of a business card. The bag clearly held white powder. The buyer took it, hit the gas, and drove off.

Smooth as hell.

But deals like that were only for regulars.

If a stranger like Chen Yan tried to get close, some accomplice hiding in the dark would come out to chase him off.

Chen Yan watched these guys for a moment.

By his moral standards, drug dealers definitely deserved to die.

But the problem was, none of these guys were at the end of their rope in terms of fate.

"Forget it. Guess you’re lucky today."

Chen Yan watched for a while, couldn’t find a suitable target, and turned to leave.

After that he drove to a car wash and had his car cleaned.

While he was waiting, Chen Yan walked over to the roadside, strolled a few steps, then went into a convenience store to buy a drink.

When he walked in, the clerk sitting behind the counter—clearly just a young part-timer—only glanced up at him once, then dropped his gaze and went back to fiddling with his phone, no telling what he was playing.

Then something happened.

Chen Yan walked to the very back of the store and was standing beside the refrigerated case, picking out a drink...

From that angle, his figure was just blocked by the shelves; anyone outside couldn’t see him.

Suddenly, a cry of alarm came from outside!

He turned around and saw the clerk in front of the counter, nervously raising both hands.

Standing at the counter was a scrawny white guy in a filthy, worn-out hoodie, hood pulled up over his head. He had a handgun raised in his hand, aimed at the clerk, muttering curses under his breath.

The clerk was clearly nervous, but he didn’t overreact. He raised his hands quickly and backed away.

The white guy stepped in close, yanked open the cash register drawer, and started scooping out the bills inside, not even bothering to look at denominations, grabbing fistfuls and stuffing them into his pockets.

All the while, the muzzle of his gun never moved off the clerk.

The clerk muttered, "Easy, man, relax. I’m not gonna fight you. It’s not my money anyway, I just work here."

"Quit the crap. Get back. Don’t do anything stupid!" The robber was clearly putting on a front; excitement had flushed his face with an unhealthy red, and his eyes kept darting around. You could tell he was actually a wreck inside.

When Chen Yan craned his neck to take a look, the robber spotted the movement right away and whipped around to stare at him.

Chen Yan immediately took the hint and stepped back, spreading his hands to show the drink bottle he was holding.

"I’m just here to buy something."

"Don’t do anything stupid! I swear to god I’ll shoot!"

Chen Yan smiled and took half a step farther back.

He wasn’t the least bit afraid of the gun in the guy’s hand.

With his Dao Body, aside from having exceptionally high Affinity with Heaven and Earth Primordial Qi, he’d also taken Elixirs in the past—most importantly Divine Tree Juice—and his flesh had been nourished by Primordial Qi.

All of that made his body extraordinarily tough!

Put it this way: ordinary bullets couldn’t even get through his muscle.

In Chen Yan’s eyes, that handgun was about as threatening as someone scratching an itch.

After scooping the cash from the register three times, the robber had taken most of the bills. He couldn’t be bothered with the coins that were left. Backing away, he kept waving the gun between the two of them, then turned and bolted out the door, sprinting down the street.

Only then did Chen Yan slowly walk over to the counter, look at the clerk, and say, "You alright?"

The clerk let out a breath and shook his head helplessly. "I’m fine. It’s the boss who’s taking the hit. We’ve got a camera here."

As he spoke, he raised a hand and pointed to the corner of the ceiling, where there was indeed a surveillance camera.

Chen Yan nodded. "So, you gonna call the cops?"

"Yeah."

"Then I’m out of here," Chen Yan said, shaking his head. "I don’t want to get mixed up in this."

The clerk didn’t find that strange—lots of people don’t like dealing with the police, and if you stick around, you end up getting questioned along with everyone else.

Chen Yan strode out of the store and quickly headed down the street—in the same direction the robber had fled!

This target was pretty damn good!

·

Just now, with one glance, Chen Yan had seen that this robber didn’t have long to live. In his fortune, his fate was already almost at its end.

His death date was within the next day or two—the specifics would depend on his own luck.

And the key point: he was a robber.

From the way he looked, this clearly wasn’t his first time doing something like this—he handled the gun with a fair bit of familiarity.

A criminal whose fate was already marked for death.

Killing him wouldn’t weigh on the conscience.

Chen Yan followed along the street in pursuit.

His five senses were razor-sharp; his hearing, sight, and smell were all extremely keen. Back in the store, even a few steps away, he’d already caught the heavy stench of smoke and alcohol coming off the robber.

Sure enough, after he turned two corners at a brisk pace, he saw the robber up ahead.

"Guess his stamina’s crap. Only two blocks and he’s already slowing down," Chen Yan thought with a smirk, then eased his pace, trailing him from a distance.
