Chapter 76: Chapter 76| Clean-up

Two hours had passed without either of them noticing.

The room had gone from afternoon light to the specific amber of early evening. The city outside the window shifting its character, the safe house settling into the quieter register of a building whose occupants had stopped moving around as much. Damian noticed the light first. Then the ceiling. Then Elena’s weight against his side and the specific quality of the silence that had been sitting around them since they’d stopped doing anything that required sound.

He was fully unclothed. Elena had her skirt still on — she’d borrowed it from Kira’s spare clothes along with the pale blue shirt that was now somewhere on the floor. The bra was on the chair. Her dark hair had escaped its braid entirely and spread across the pillow in a way the braid had clearly never intended.

He hadn’t planned to fall asleep.

He had fallen asleep anyway. The specific sleep of a body that had been running on operational necessity for days and had found the first moment that felt safe enough to stop pretending it wasn’t tired.

Elena moved first.

She lifted her head from his chest and looked at the window. At the light. Then at him with the expression of someone who had done the same math he’d just done and had reached the same conclusion about what two hours of amber light meant.

She sat up. Tapped his shoulder twice.

He opened his eyes properly.

"We need to get cleaned up," she said quietly. "Before Sable comes to the room."

He looked at the ceiling. Then at the window. Then at the shirt on the floor and the general evidence of an afternoon that had been considerably more eventful than the Facility Nine research Sable was currently running in the main room.

He yawned.

"Yeah," he said.

She was already standing. Straightening her skirt, picking her shirt up from the floor and assessing whether it was wearable without ironing, which it was, barely. She looked at him still horizontal on the bed and raised an eyebrow.

"I’ll shower first," she said. "You clean up the room. Then you go in after me." She looked at the floor. "And find your clothes."

He looked at the floor. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

"I know where they are," he said.

"Do you," she said.

He looked at the corner where his shorts had ended up.

"Most of them," he said.

She almost smiled. Picked up her bra from the chair. Went to the bathroom and closed the door and the shower started running within thirty seconds. She was efficient about everything, Elena, it was one of the consistent things about her.

He sat up.

Looked at the room.

It needed some attention. He gave it attention — the specific domestic efficiency of someone who had learned during six years in a facility that the fastest way to make a space look unoccupied was to make it look exactly as it had when you arrived. He worked through it methodically. Straightened. Replaced. Located the remaining items from the floor with the pragmatic thoroughness of someone who had done this before in worse circumstances and found the process morally neutral.

By the time the shower stopped the room looked like a room.

Elena came out in a cloud of steam wearing her shirt and skirt with her wet hair loose around her shoulders. The braid abandoned for now, the dark hair falling straight and damp to her collar. She looked at the room. At him. At the room again.

"Good," she said simply.

He took the bathroom.

The shower was hot and immediate and did what showers did after the kind of afternoon the safe house had just contained. Reset the register, clarify the edges of things, produce the specific quality of clean that was also a kind of punctuation between what had happened and what came next.

He changed into a white plain tee and shorts. Ran a hand through his wet hair. Looked at himself in the bathroom mirror for a moment.

’That happened,’ he thought.

The mirror offered no commentary.

He went back to the main room.

Sable was at the table where she’d been all afternoon. Tablet open. Three empty coffee cups arranged in a line that told the story of how the afternoon had gone for her. She looked up when he appeared and looked at him with the expression that contained several things and was expressing none of them directly.

"Facility Nine," she said. "I have a preliminary picture."

"Good," he replied. He poured water from the kitchen. Drank it. Poured another. "Where’s Elena?"

"Kitchen," Sable said. "Making something." She paused. The specific pause that had weight in it. "She seemed comfortable finding her way around."

He looked at the kitchen doorway.

"She’s adaptable," he said.

"Yes," Sable said. "She is." She looked back at her tablet. The expression on her face was the one she wore when she had filed something and had decided the filing was sufficient and the subject was closed.

He sat down across from her.

Elena appeared from the kitchen with a plate of something assembled from whatever the safe house supplies had available. Practical, unannounced, the specific ease of someone who had decided the safe house was a place they lived rather than a place they were staying. She set it on the table between them without ceremony and sat down.

The three of them ate.

The conversation that developed was operational. Sable walking them through the Facility Nine preliminary picture, Elena contributing archive context, the picture building the way pictures built when more than one person had pieces of it. Kira’s door stayed closed through dinner. She appeared at the end of it — dressed, composed, her left arm held with the careful economy that had become its own background detail over the past two days.

She looked at the table. At the three of them. At the empty plate.

She went to the kitchen and came back with her own food and sat at the end of the table and ate without commenting on anything she had or hadn’t heard through a closed door for the past two hours.
