Chapter 68: Chapter 68| SB-002
[Note: She has been working on this longer than this system has existed.]
The notifications held at the edge of his vision and the kitchen held its silence and outside the city continued into its mid-morning character completely indifferent to the specific weight of what four people had just understood at a safe house table.
He read the notifications twice.
Then he looked up.
Three faces looking back at him. Sable with the expression of someone whose model had just been confirmed at a scale she hadn’t fully anticipated. Kira with the operational recalibration she always wore when a variable turned out to be bigger than the file suggested. Elena with the look of someone who had spent two years sitting next to something extraordinary without knowing what it was.
"She’s been pushing the seal from the inside," he said. "For fifteen years. Before the system existed. Before I knew what I was." He paused. "She started working on it before I was old enough to understand what she was working on."
The ring was warm on his finger.
The seal degradation counter sat at 10.1%.
Somewhere in Facility Four a woman who had been inside a box for thirty years had been quietly taking it apart from the inside for fifteen of them.
"We need to get to her," he said.
Nobody disagreed.
Nobody spoke for a moment after the notifications closed.
The kitchen held its specific morning quiet — coffee cooling in four cups, the city outside the window doing its mid-morning thing, the safe house absorbing what had just been understood at its table the way it absorbed everything. Completely. Without comment.
[Flux: 47%]
Damian looked at the ring.
Fifteen years. She had been pushing the seal from inside a Level Five suppressed designation for fifteen years using a research program she’d built inside Nexarion’s own infrastructure without them understanding what they were funding. Before the Flux Origin System existed. Before Eren had finished building the trail. Before Damian was old enough to understand what any of it meant.
She had started before he could walk. Probably.
He sat with that for a moment and let it find whatever place it was going to find in the architecture of everything he’d been carrying since the farmhouse.
Kira was the first one to speak. Not because she’d finished processing. Because processing and operating were things she did simultaneously and the operational implications had already separated themselves from the emotional ones and were demanding attention.
"If she’s been building resources inside Facility Four for fifteen years," she said. Her voice was measured. The voice of someone thinking out loud rather than delivering a conclusion. "The research program. The outputs. Whatever she’s been producing under their classification without them knowing what it actually is." She looked at Damian. "That’s not just information. That’s infrastructure. People she may have cultivated. Access she may have built. Positions she may have established inside the facility that we have no record of because they don’t exist in any file we’ve seen."
"She’s been building from the inside," Sable said. "The same way Eren built from the outside. The same way Kira built from inside the field division." She looked at the table. "Every person in this picture has been building toward the same moment from a different position." She paused. "Except the approach to Facility Four assumes we’re going in without support. That assumption may be wrong."
"We can’t plan around support we can’t confirm," Kira said.
"No," Sable agreed. "But we can plan knowing it might be there. Which is different from planning assuming it won’t be."
Elena had been quiet since Sable named the sibling cross-reference. The specific quiet of someone sitting on something they were deciding how to say rather than whether to say it.
Damian looked at her.
She looked back at him.
"The SB-002 file," she said. "The sibling designation. I told you I saw it once in a routine audit." She paused. "I told you I couldn’t access it at my clearance level. That’s true." She looked at her cup. "What I didn’t say is that the audit flagged it because the file had been accessed recently. Not by me. Not by anyone in the standard research division." She looked up. "The access log showed an internal system query from inside Facility Four. From the AL-001 research terminal."
The table was very quiet.
"Your mother accessed your sibling’s file," Kira said.
"Six weeks ago," Elena said. "The same update window that showed Aria Laine’s status as active." She looked at Damian. "She’s been watching both of you. From inside. For however long she’s had the access to do it."
Damian looked at the ring.
Six weeks ago his mother had accessed his sibling’s file from inside Facility Four. Six weeks ago was also the most recent status confirmation on Aria’s own record. Two things happening in the same window. She’d been checking on her children. Both of them. From inside a box that wasn’t supposed to allow for checking on anything.
"The sibling," Damian said. "The file. Did it have an element classification?"
Sable shook her head. "Not at our access level. The element classification sits at a depth we couldn’t reach with the credentials we had." She paused. "The relationship field, the facility, the designation age. That’s everything we pulled."
He looked at the system at the edge of his vision.
’The sibling,’ he thought, directing it the way he’d learned to direct things at it. ’SB-002. Facility Nine. Twenty two years. Do you know the element class?’
The system was quiet for three seconds.
Then it moved.
Ding!
[Query: SB-002 element classification.]
[Status: Insufficient data for confirmation.]
[Note: Dual Axiom pathway architecture confirmed in maternal line — AL-001.]
[Note: Dual Axiom pathway architecture confirmed in Subject 07.]
[Probability assessment: SB-002 carries Dual Axiom pathway architecture — high.]
[Element class: Unknown. Seal status: Unknown. Current expression: Unknown.]
[Note: Two Dual Axiom Subjects in the same generation has no documented precedent.]
He read it twice.
Then he looked up and read it to the table.
