Chapter 63: Chapter 63| The Standard Motorway Variety

The regional road gave way to the main road and the main road gave way to the highway and the highway put distance between them and Facility Seven at the specific rate of a car doing ten kilometers above the speed limit while its driver held the wheel with one good arm and didn’t mention it.

Damian noticed.

"How bad is the arm," he said.

"Manageable," Kira said.

"That’s not a number," he said.

She glanced at him. "It’s what I have right now," she said. "I’ll give you a number when we’re somewhere that isn’t moving."

He looked at her left hand on the wheel. The grip was functional. She was using it, which meant the joint was intact. But the specific angle of her elbow said something had taken a hit that hadn’t fully registered yet.

In the back Sable had her tablet open. Not the archive data — the route. Checking the approach to the safe house, running the same counter-surveillance logic she ran every time they moved between locations. Elena sat beside her with her personal drive in her lap and her coat still on and the expression of someone who had not yet begun to process what the last four hours had produced.

She caught Damian looking at her in the rearview mirror.

"I’m fine," she said. The tone of someone who wasn’t sure yet whether that was true but had decided to commit to it anyway.

"You ran well," he said.

She looked at him for a moment. "I do a lot of walking," she said. "The facility is six floors. The lift breaks down regularly."

Something that might have been amusement moved across Kira’s face. She didn’t let it arrive.

The highway ran west. The alarm faded behind them into the distance and then into nothing and the grey sky sat above the countryside and the car moved through it with four people and a transfer cable full of thirty years of classified data and a personal drive with eight months of documentation and a question about a sibling that nobody had said out loud since the archive room.

He needed to refuel before they reached the safe house. At five percent and draining he wasn’t going to make the two hour drive without his body making the decision for him somewhere on the highway, which was a worse outcome than making it himself now.

Here’s the fix:

He looked at Sable in the back.

She was already looking at him. Already reading the number from his face the way she’d been reading it since the farmhouse. She glanced at Kira.

"Is there anywhere nearby we can pull over for a few minutes?" he said. "I just need a short break."

Kira looked at the navigation. "Fuel station. Fourteen minutes up the road."

"That works," Damian said.

Elena looked between them. Then at her window with the expression of someone filing something they didn’t yet have the context to understand.

Fourteen minutes.

The services were the standard motorway variety — fuel station, a small shop, a cafe that had been open since 5:00 AM and looked like it. A handful of vehicles in the car park at this hour. Nobody paying attention to a black car pulling into the far corner of the lot away from the fuel pumps.

Kira cut the engine.

Looked at Elena.

"Take a walk," she said. Not unkindly. Just precisely.

Elena looked at her. Looked at Damian. Looked at Sable.

Then she got out of the car and walked toward the small shop without asking questions which told him something useful about her capacity for reading situations.

Kira got out too. She moved to the boot of the car and opened it and began doing something that involved the small medical kit she apparently kept there which was consistent with how she survived eight months of building a safe house with two extra backup locations and a private communication channel without Nexarion noticing.

The back door opened.

Sable got in the front.

She looked at him the moment she got in the front seat. Really looked at him, not the operational assessment she ran on everything, something more direct than that.

"How are you doing?" she said. "You look terrible."

"Of course I do," he said. "I’m low as hell."

She looked at his face for a moment longer. Then something in her expression softened into the specific warmth that appeared when she stopped being a researcher and was just herself.

"You can relax now," she said. "I’ll take care of it."

She reached for the hem of her top.

The services car park held its quiet around them. Morning light on the tarmac. A lorry pulling out of the fuel station fifty meters away. The small shop’s fluorescent lighting visible through the window where Elena was standing in the drinks aisle looking at nothing in particular.

Sable’s top came off. Her bra followed, the clasp coming free in the practiced motion that had its own place in the landscape of familiar things now. She turned toward him in the passenger seat and her right hand came up and cupped her left breast toward him and her eyes found his eyes in the specific way they found his now. Direct, warm, no distance left in them anywhere.

His vision flickered with the notification.

He leaned across.

His mouth found her right nipple first this time. She inhaled sharply above him "uhmm fuck!". The right side always caught her differently from the left, a detail he’d learned without deciding to learn it. He drew and the milk came immediately. Rich and warm. The ×2.0 ceiling made itself known in the quality of every draw, deeper and more satisfying than anything the early cycles had produced, the accumulated weight of everything from the motel room to this car park. Present in the specific way things were present when they had been built rather than just happened.

Her breath left her in a slow sound above him.

"Hhh..."

Her left hand found the back of his head. Her right gripped the seat edge. Her head tilted back against the headrest. The afternoon light came through the windscreen. The car park continued around them. None of it was as present as the warmth between them and the Flux climbing steady and certain.

He moved to the left nipple.

She said his name. "Damian...". Quietly. With everything in it.

He stayed until the system confirmed.

Ding!

[Bonus compounding: ×2.0 — ceiling maintained.]

He sat back redrawing his mouth from her already erect nipples milk remnants visible across his lips. She refastened her bra and reached for her top and the car held its warmth around them and outside the afternoon continued doing what afternoon did.

She looked at him with the flush that appeared when precision abandoned its post.

"Better," she said.

"Considerably," he replied, throwing a short smirk.

She almost smiled. Reached for the door handle. "I’ll get Elena," she said. "You tell Kira we’re ready."
