Chapter 61: Chapter 61| An Unusual Kink For Researcher’s
They moved fast through the archive room door and into the eastern corridor and Kira pulled Elena aside before they’d covered ten meters.
"Are you sure about this," she said. Not aggressive. Just direct. The tone of someone who needed a real answer before the situation made the question irrelevant.
Elena looked at her. "Yes," she said.
"Why," Kira said.
Elena glanced at the drive in her hand. Then at the corridor ahead. Then back at Kira with the expression of someone who had rehearsed this answer in their head for eight months without ever expecting to actually say it out loud.
"Because I’ve been sitting in that room for two years watching what they do to people," she said. "Watching the files update. Watching the protocol classifications change. Watching the research outputs get filed under legitimate science headings while the sources of that research are listed as assets rather than people." She paused. "I took this job because I believed in the work. I stayed because I didn’t know how to leave safely. And I built that drive because I needed to believe that at some point the information would find someone who could use it." She looked at Damian briefly. Then back at Kira. "It just found them faster than I expected."
Kira held her gaze for a moment longer. Then she looked at Damian.
Something moved in her expression. Dry, sharp, the specific look she wore when she was acknowledging something she found simultaneously irritating and undeniable.
"You keep doing this," she said.
He looked at her. "Doing what."
"Drawing researchers," she said. "Making them betray Nexarion." She gestured between herself and Sable and now Elena. "You walked out of a facility three weeks ago with nothing. Now there are three of us." She paused. "Four if you count yourself."
He looked at the three of them.
"I didn’t recruit anyone," he said.
"No," she said. "That’s what makes it worse." She turned toward the corridor. "Move."
They moved.

The corridor back was not the same as the corridor in. Four minutes of facility response time had changed its character. The specific atmosphere of an institution that had registered an anomaly and was in the process of deciding how seriously to take it. Doors that had been open were closed. The sound of keyboards from the research lab above had stopped. The lighting in the lower level had shifted from its standard fluorescent white to something with a slightly redder quality that said someone had hit a precautionary status protocol.
Not full alert. Not yet. But the direction of travel was clear.
Damian moved ahead of the group with Kira at his shoulder and Sable and Elena behind them in that order. Sable because she knew the building’s secondary access routes, Elena because she was the variable whose operational profile he hadn’t had time to assess.
She kept up. He noted that.
They reached the stairwell without contact. Down two floors. Through the lower level corridor past the two subjects they’d dropped on the way in. Still down, both of them, the pathway disruption holding longer than the standard recovery window.
The maintenance door at the western face was ahead.

He felt it before they reached it.
The stationary signature on the eastern face had moved.
Not toward the building, toward the western side. Toward the maintenance exit. The specific repositioning of something that had felt the field collapse and the interior engagement and had drawn the correct conclusion about which exit the intruders were going to use.
He stopped.
Held up a closed fist.
Everyone stopped.
He looked at Kira. Pointed at the door. Made a circular motion with his finger — someone on the other side, moving, repositioning.
Her eyes sharpened. She understood immediately.
She did a cold calculation on his Flux level, couldn’t see the number but could read it on his face with the accuracy she’d been reading it since the stairwell.
She moved her mouth without sound. "How much."
He held up eight fingers.
Something moved in her expression. Not panic, the specific recalibration of someone doing math they don’t like the result of and doing it anyway.
She looked at the door. At Elena and Sable behind them. At the two hundred meters of open ground waiting on the other side of the western face and the asset that had just repositioned itself between them and it.
"I’ll handle it," she said quietly.
"Kira..."
"Eight percent is not enough for an engagement," she said. The tone of someone stating a fact. "I have significantly more than eight percent. I’ll handle it." She looked at him. "Get them to the tree line."
He looked at her.
She looked back at him with the flat professional steadiness that had been her default setting since the farmhouse yard and that he now understood was not coldness but the specific composure of someone who had been doing this long enough to have made their peace with what it required.
"Go," she said.
He pushed the maintenance door open.
The asset was waiting seven meters from the door.
Not the stationary position it had been holding for the past two hours. Active now. Moving with the specific economy of something that had come off passive concealment and was running at operational capacity.
Kira went through the door first.
What happened between her and the asset happened fast enough that Damian caught only the shape of it. Wind, compressed and precise, the specific application of Aeros output from someone who had been using their element for field work long enough to have found every application that didn’t require direct engagement. The asset responded. Kira responded to the response. It was not a clean exchange. It was the kind of exchange that produced sounds he filed without examining and left marks he could see on her when it was over.
But she was standing when the asset wasn’t.
"Go," she said again. Her voice was steady. Her left arm was not.
He went.
