Chapter 55: Chapter 55| Contact

The facility smelled like every other Nexarion installation he’d been inside.

Recycled air. Cleaning solvent. The specific institutional undertone of a building that had been processing people for years and had absorbed the residue of that processing into its walls. He noticed it the moment the maintenance door closed behind them and filed it in the place he filed things that didn’t have an immediate operational use but that his body remembered anyway.

2:02 PM.

Six minutes of window.

Kira moved ahead of him down the western corridor. Fast and quiet, her footsteps finding the spaces between sounds the way she found the spaces between everything. He matched her pace. The corridor was institutional grey, fluorescent lit, the kind of interior that had been designed for function and hadn’t apologized for it. Doors on both sides. Most closed. One open at the far end with the sound of keyboards and the low conversation of people who thought they were having an ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

The research lab.

Kira slowed as they approached. Held up two fingers. Two people visible through the gap in the open door. She angled toward the opposite wall, reducing her profile from the sightline. He did the same.

They passed the door at the edge of the sightline.

Neither of the researchers looked up.

Twenty meters further down the corridor a stairwell door. Kira pushed through it without slowing and he followed and the door closed behind them and the stairwell received them in its specific echo. Every footstep slightly too present, the acoustics of a contained vertical space that didn’t let sound disappear the way open corridors did.

Lower level. That was where the hardware sat according to the floor plan. One floor down, eastern structural section, the location his mother had mapped from inside a facility four hundred kilometers away over six months of careful observation.

They took the stairs.

He felt it before he saw it.

Flux Read registered a signature at the base of the stairwell — not the suppressed quality of the eastern face asset, something active and moving. A Subject running standard output, not concealing, which meant either they hadn’t detected the intrusion yet or they had and weren’t concerned about being detected themselves.

He grabbed Kira’s arm.

She stopped instantly. Looked at him.

He held up one finger. Pointed down. Moved his hand in a slow circle — moving, not stationary.

Her eyes sharpened. She understood.

They held position on the stairs. Listened.

Footsteps below. Measured. The specific cadence of a patrol route rather than a purposeful approach. Someone covering ground on a schedule rather than responding to a threat. Interior sweep. Not in Kira’s operational data because it was either new or had been running at a timing that her eight month old staff rotation hadn’t captured.

The footsteps moved away from the stairwell base.

Kira looked at him. Held up three fingers. Counted down.

Three. Two. One.

They moved.

The lower level was narrower than the floor above. Lower ceiling, fewer doors, the specific character of a building’s functional basement rather than its public face. Pipes along the ceiling. The hum of equipment behind closed doors. The footsteps of the interior sweep audible but receding toward the northern end of the corridor.

The hardware location was at the eastern end. Sixty meters of corridor between them and it.

They covered forty of those meters before the sweep came back.

Not from the north this time. A side corridor. One that hadn’t appeared in Kira’s operational data of eight months old, and whoever managed Facility Seven’s interior layout had apparently made changes since her last proximity. The subject came around the corner at a walk. Then it saw them.

The walk became something faster.

Damian had a half second of warning from Flux Read before the Subject committed to the engagement.

He used it.

He moved left away from Kira, creating distance between them so the Subject couldn’t cover both simultaneously. The Subject tracked him, which was the correct tactical choice because he was the higher output threat, which gave Kira the angle she needed.

She didn’t take it immediately. She assessed first. Then in one second, the blink-fast assessment of someone who had been doing this long enough to make good decisions at speed and then she moved.

The Subject was fast. Not Aeros-class fast but trained fast, the speed of someone who had been running interior sweeps for long enough to have built it into reflex. It closed the distance to Damian in two steps and the suppression baton came up in a swing that had the weight of practice behind it.

Damian dropped low.

The baton passed over him. He came up inside the swing’s arc, the same move he’d used at the corner store, the move that had worked twice and was working a third time because the principle was sound even if he was still rough on the execution and drove his palm into the Subject’s sternum.

No Flux behind it this time. Just the heel of his hand and his body weight.

Not enough.

The Subject absorbed it, stumbled back two steps, and reset with the specific speed of someone who had been hit before and knew how to recover from it. It looked at him with the flat assessment of a combat-designated asset reading a threat level and adjusting accordingly.

Then Kira hit it from behind.

Not a baton strike. Something more precise, the specific application of compressed air at a pressure that didn’t leave a mark and didn’t need to. The Subject went down in a controlled collapse, conscious but unable to coordinate movement, its Flux pathway temporarily disrupted by something that had found the gap between its output and its tolerance.

Two seconds. Clean.

Damian looked at her.

"That Subject," he whispered. "Didn’t use any Flux."

Kira glanced back at him without slowing. "Low reserves, Conserving. Could be anything." She kept her voice at the same barely-there level. "Not our problem right now." A pause. "Shush. Keep moving."
