Caught between the combined assault of two Gigantamax Pokémon of equal strength, Gigantamax Centiskorch found itself at a disadvantage after just a single exchange.

But that only stoked its fury further. It let out a roar, then curled its body inward again, tucking its head deep within its own coils until it looked like nothing more than a ball.

"Is that... Defense Curl?! It's setting up the Defense Curl into Rollout combo!" Edwin caught on to Centiskorch's plan at once.

"That would be it." Jacob nodded. Nothing else made sense — Centiskorch giving up Coil, a move that boosts Attack, Defense, and accuracy all at once, only made sense if it was setting up something even more devastating with Defense Curl instead.

Defense Curl ranked among the weakest status moves out there, raising Defense by only a single stage — completely overshadowed by moves like Iron Defense, Bulk Up, or Coil. But it carried one very particular trick: once a Pokémon used Defense Curl, its body effectively became a coiled sphere, and any rolling move that followed — Ice Ball, or Rollout — would hit with far greater force.

Rollout itself started weak, with a base power of just 30, but it could be chained turn after turn while the user kept its rolling posture. And the faster that roll built up, the harder each hit landed — power doubling with every successful strike: 30, then 60, 120, 240, and finally a devastating 480. Combined with Defense Curl, that opening hit alone doubled to 60, climbing all the way to 960 by the fifth strike.

Naturally, for all its power, Rollout carried two serious weaknesses. First, if it was blocked by a move like Protect, the whole sequence reset, and the climbing power had to build back up from scratch. Second, its accuracy dropped the faster it rolled — though that particular flaw meant nothing here, since Centiskorch had already used Coil once, sharpening its focus and boosting its accuracy in the process, making its Rollout land true almost every time.

.......

Sure enough, Centiskorch didn't disappoint. The moment Defense Curl took hold, its body began rolling through the surrounding magma, coating itself in molten rock before bursting free and barreling straight toward Gigantamax Cinderace. Charging in wrapped in scorching lava was a brutal opening move by any measure.

In that instant, Centiskorch had become little more than a surging fireball, hurtling forward with reckless momentum, Cinderace squarely in its path.

Facing that kind of onslaught head-on, even Gigantamax Cinderace didn't dare take the hit directly — it threw up Max Guard instead.

"Boom!"

A shimmering barrier snapped into place before Cinderace, a wall of light absorbing Centiskorch's charge completely.

At the same moment, Gigantamax Charizard reared its head, a fierce pressure rolling off its body as Flying-type energy surged to life within it. A twister tore into being and roared toward Centiskorch.

Max Airstream!

"Boom!"

Centiskorch simply endured the hit without breaking stride, still rolling, still bearing down on Cinderace. Caught between two opponents, it had no choice but to concentrate everything on taking one of them down before it could be worn down by both at once.

It kept tearing across the ground like a blazing sphere. Just as it was about to slam into Cinderace, the rabbit dropped low, pushed off with its powerful legs, and launched its whole body skyward.

Bounce!

Once again, Cinderace slipped free of Centiskorch's charge, this time by leaping clear with Bounce.

Watching its target vanish into the air didn't slow Centiskorch down for even a moment — it kept its rolling momentum going, refusing to let its speed drop, since losing momentum meant losing all the power it had built. In the games, a missed Rollout resets everything back to zero — but out here, in the real fight, all that mattered was keeping the rolling posture intact, and Centiskorch could keep building speed without ever truly starting over.

.......

High above, Cinderace looked down at the still-rolling Centiskorch, eyes narrowing, its whole body wrapped in Flying-type energy as it dropped from the sky and drove a kick straight down into its opponent.

"Boom!"

The two collided in a burst of wind and scattering sparks.

Watching from a distance, Jacob and Edwin could see clearly that Centiskorch had the clear upper hand — even after that collision, its momentum hadn't faltered at all, and it kept building speed. Rollout after Rollout came without pause, giving Cinderace no room to recover before Centiskorch crashed into it again. Against that relentless barrage, Cinderace found it nearly impossible to parry, and was forced to meet Centiskorch head-on.

"G-Max Fireball!"

"Boom!"

Cinderace drove its foot into the blazing fireball beneath it, sending it roaring toward Centiskorch in a wall of flame.

Centiskorch, meanwhile, kept accelerating, its Rollout climbing higher in power with every pass.

"Roar!"

Charizard wasn't idle either. Rock-type energy wrapped around its body once more — but this time, instead of Max Rockfall, it unleashed Ancient Power.

The attack struck true, but the rapidly rolling Centiskorch shrugged it off entirely, choosing to absorb the hit rather than break its charge, its focus locked entirely on Cinderace. In that moment, it was pure crimson momentum — tearing straight through the incoming G-Max Fireball, absorbing the damage without slowing, and slamming full-force into Cinderace.

It moved too fast for Cinderace to have any chance of dodging.

"Boom!"

With a thunderous impact, Centiskorch drove a devastating blow into Cinderace, sending it crashing backward to the ground with a heavy thud.

Cinderace struggled back to its feet, and looking at the Centiskorch still bearing down on it, retreat crossed its mind for the first time.

Watching the scene unfold, Jacob turned to Edwin. "Cinderace's about to bolt. I'll go after it myself in a bit — stay put here."

"Okay." Edwin nodded.

Even as they spoke, the badly wounded Cinderace glanced once more at the relentlessly rolling Centiskorch and turned to flee.

Centiskorch didn't bother giving chase. Driving Cinderace off was enough for now — there was still a Gigantamax Charizard waiting nearby. Still rolling, it carved a graceful arc through the ground, shifting direction as though consumed by battle-fury, and barreled straight toward Gigantamax Charizard.
