Chapter 387: Winona, Shocked and Stunned

Early the next morning.

May contacted her parents and swapped her Treecko for her evolved Aggron.

With Aggron in hand, May regained her confidence and, accompanied by Ash and the others, headed toward the Viridian Gym.

Before long, the group arrived at the Gym’s battle arena once again.

"May, are you ready?" Winona asked with a smile.

May touched the Poké Ball at her waist and said solemnly, "I’m ready, Miss Winona."

"Then, let this Gym Challenge begin!"

Winona gave the referee a look and then walked to her side of the battlefield.

Seeing both were in position, the referee announced the battle rules: "The upcoming match at Viridian Gym..."

The rules were no different from when Ash challenged it; it was a 3v3 format.

"Come on out, Altaria."

Winona’s first Pokémon was still the Dragon-type traitor.

"As expected, it’s Altaria!" May took a deep breath. "Aggron, take the stage!"

"Aggron!"

Thud!

Even with a light landing, Aggron, with its Heavy Metal ability, caused quite a stir.

"???"

Winona was dumbfounded when she saw May’s Aggron; if her judgment was correct, this one was already at the Elite-tier level.

What kind of rookie Trainer pulls out an Elite-tier Pokémon for a Gym Challenge?

[Pokémon: Aggron (May)]

[Type: Steel + Rock]

[Gender: Female]

[Level: Elite-tier Beginner]

[Ability: Heavy Metal (Weight is doubled)]

[Potential: Quasi-Champion]

[Moves: Heavy Slam, Take Down, Rock Slide, Dragon Rush...]

"Aggron, strike first! Use Stone Edge!"

"Aggron!"

Aiming at the Altaria in mid-air, Aggron launched over twenty sharp stone pillars with Stone Edge.

"Altaria, quickly climb higher and dodge!"

Altaria flew with all its might, gaining altitude while looking for a chance to get close to Aggron.

After narrowly dodging the incoming stones, Winona commanded again: "Altaria, use Dragon Breath!"

Altaria unleashed a green Dragon Breath at Aggron, causing Aggron to blink uncomfortably.

May chose to go head-to-head: "Aggron, counter with Thunder Wave."

As she spoke, the two sharp horns on Aggron’s head released a blue electromagnetic wave toward Altaria.

Locked in a beam struggle, Altaria had no chance to dodge, and the paralysis from the Thunder Wave left it feeling very distressed.

"Very good! Aggron, follow up with Rock Slide!"

Seeing Altaria’s condition, Winona had no choice but to go all out: "Altaria, use Draco Meteor!"

As Aggron launched Rock Slide, Altaria’s Draco Meteor exploded in mid-air and rained down on Aggron.

Both moves hit almost simultaneously, but because Altaria’s level was lower than Aggron’s, it was Altaria that ultimately collapsed.

"May, I admit I underestimated you. But to borrow a phrase from Ash, the battle has only just begun. You’d better be careful!"

Winona silently shelved any thoughts of going easy. She took a deep breath and threw a Poké Ball. "Swellow, go!"

"Swellow!"

The Shiny Swellow appeared on the battlefield again.

However, after coming out, it gave Winona a puzzled look.

Swellow: "Didn’t we agree I wouldn’t have to battle?"

Faced with Swellow’s questioning gaze, Winona could only offer an awkward smile.

Fortunately, her Swellow didn’t have an extreme personality and had no complaints about this sudden overtime.

The moment she saw Swellow, May realized her thoughts from yesterday had come true. She mused inwardly: "Swellow already? Miss Winona really is raising the difficulty of my challenge."

Thinking this, she knew that if she didn’t go all out, this Gym Challenge would be trouble. "Aggron, use Sandstorm!"

Hearing this, Winona hurriedly shouted: "Swellow, use Air Cutter, quickly!"

Aggron raised its hands, rapidly gathering Rock-type energy. Just as a flurry of sand was about to envelop it, two wind blades flew over.

Seeing the incoming attack, Aggron immediately manipulated the Sandstorm to block it.

Weakened by the sand, Swellow’s attack didn’t cause much damage, and on the contrary, the Sandstorm kicked up by Aggron disrupted its flight balance.

"This is really troublesome." Winona frowned slightly. "Swellow, use Hyper Beam to tear through the sand, then follow up with Steel Wing!"

Hearing this, Swellow flew around Aggron twice, found a weak point in the sand, and unleashed a powerful Hyper Beam.

The beam was potent and easily pierced through the Sandstorm, striking Aggron.

After tearing a hole, Swellow dove down rapidly.

Seeing this, May hurriedly shouted: "Aggron, use Metal Claw!"

Clang!

Steel Wing and Metal Claw collided, and both sides began a contest of strength. After a brief stalemate, Aggron was knocked back two steps by a wing strike.

There was no helping it; Swellow’s Hyper Beam was too powerful, and its accuracy was quite high. Aggron was heavily injured.

"Swellow, Encore Hyper Beam!"

Boom!

With a dull thud of a heavy object hitting the ground, Aggron performed its signature move of collapsing and falling asleep.

The referee raised a flag and announced: "Aggron is unable to battle, Swellow wins..."

"Miss Winona’s Swellow is strong, but I won’t give up just like that. Tyranitar, it’s your turn!" May said.

"Tyranitar!"

As soon as Tyranitar entered, the Sandstorm previously summoned by Aggron instantly became active.

Sand Stream ability activated!

Seeing Tyranitar, Winona was speechless.

Is this even reasonable?

First Aggron, and now a Johto Quasi-Legendary, Tyranitar.

Is Petalburg Gym going to change from Normal-type to Rock-type in the future?

A rookie Trainer who only started a few months ago has already grown to this extent—is there any way for others to live?

This battle was impossible to continue. Winona simply gave up on caution: "Swellow, Hyper Beam!"

"Swellow!"

This Shiny Swellow opened its mouth and fired another Hyper Beam, but this time the power was much weaker than before; clearly, the physical exertion from the earlier fight with Aggron had taken its toll.

"Tyranitar, use Dark Pulse!"

Hyper Beam and Dark Pulse collided. With no energy left, Swellow couldn’t hold out for even five seconds; it failed the beam struggle and was blasted down by a single shot.

Referee: "Swellow is unable to battle, Tyranitar wins!"

"Return, Swellow."

Winona recalled Swellow and looked at May: "May, your performance has truly exceeded my expectations. I didn’t intend to use this one, but your strength tells me you are worthy."

"Skarmory, I’ll leave the final match to you!"

As Winona threw the Poké Ball, a sturdy-looking Skarmory appeared before everyone.

"Ah!!"

With a rough and unique voice, it shrieked toward the sky.

[Pokémon: Skarmory]

[Type: Steel + Flying]

[Gender: Male]

[Level: Elite-tier Advanced]

[Ability: Sturdy (Cannot be knocked out in one hit by an opponent’s move; one-hit KO moves have no effect)]

[Potential: Quasi-Champion]

[Moves: Agility, Peck, Metal Claw, Steel Wing, Payback, Drill Peck, Brave Bird...]
