Kai nodded.

"In the village, my roasted sweet potatoes are publicly recognised as the best. If you want to eat some, I can go home and get sweet potatoes now."

Julian added another bowl for Gengar, who had finished his food.

"Kai, you eat too. Don’t mind her. If she wants roasted sweet potatoes, she can learn to roast them herself."

"She’s about to go travelling, yet she still doesn’t know any cooking at all."

Maylene snorted coldly, lowered her head, and continued eating.

"Oh."

Kai immediately began eating. He discovered that this stew was better than every stew he had eaten before.

Then he looked at the Pokémon next to him and seemed to understand why Julian had specifically made this meal here for Gengar.

"Master, do you want to catch Gengar?"

Julian nodded and reached out to stroke Gengar’s round body.

"That’s right. How could I not like a Pokémon as cool as Gengar?"

Hearing Julian’s praise, Gengar happily narrowed his eyes.

But compared to cool, Gengar would rather Julian praise him for being evil.

Kai asked curiously, "Master, isn’t Veilstone Gym a Fighting-type Gym? Why catch a Ghost-type?"

Julian smiled and said, "Dealing with Ghost-type Pokémon is a difficult point for Fighting-type Pokémon. With Gengar as a sparring partner, they can quickly accumulate experience dealing with Ghost-type Pokémon."

"Besides, Veilstone Gym is a martial arts Gym, not just a Fighting-type Gym. Gengar can also become stronger by practising fighting techniques."

When Gallade and Gengar fought, Julian had already seen that Gengar was also skilled at using Shadow Punch.

Kai asked excitedly, "Then can my Geodude also become stronger by practising fighting techniques?"

Julian answered confidently, "Of course!"

There had once been an outstanding Rock-type Gym Leader who used Geodude to participate in the P1 Grand Prix.

Although the result had not been especially ideal, there was nothing wrong with the idea.

Geodude had such a long pair of arms. It would be too much of a waste not to punch with them.

After lunch, Julian rubbed Gengar’s head.

"Gengar, we’re leaving. Stay here properly and don’t torment those pitiful villagers anymore."

Gengar nodded.

As long as he could swim in the pool, he would not go torment the villagers.

"These are the one hundred apples the villagers agreed to compensate you with. Accept them."

Gengar nodded, opened his mouth, and sucked. All the apples in the sack entered Gengar’s belly.

Maylene curiously touched Gengar’s stomach.

"Gengar, did you store the apples inside the four-dimensional space in your stomach?"

Gengar nodded, opened his mouth, and spat out a few apples.

He handed one each to Julian, Maylene, and Kai.

Then he picked up the remaining apple, took a bite, and narrowed his eyes sweetly.

In order to dispel Gengar’s anger, these were all the best apples selected from the village’s apple orchard.

Julian picked up the apple and washed it in the pool, whose water had regained its clarity.

When he bit down, there was a crisp crunch.

Crisp and sweet

Julian nodded.

"When we go back, let’s buy some apples."

Maylene also narrowed her eyes.

"Sweetwater Village’s apples really are delicious. I think the flavour isn’t worse than Mt. Coronet Reds."

Kai nodded in agreement.

"If I become a famous Trainer, I must help promote my hometown’s apples."

Julian rubbed Gengar’s head.

"Gengar, I’m leaving. I’ll come see you again in a few days."

When the time came, he could park the car in Sweetwater Village, go up the mountain to visit Gengar, then continue deeper in to visit Elekid.

Just like Elekid, the current Gengar was unwilling to leave his pool.

Only by continuously building their bond would they be willing to follow Julian away from their homes.

As they left, Kai was somewhat confused.

"Master, since your Pokémon can defeat Gengar, why don’t you just catch Gengar directly with a Poké Ball?"

Julian smiled and said, "There is a process of emotional adjustment between Trainer and Pokémon. The difference is that I choose to adjust first, while other Trainers choose to catch first."

"Only after that adjustment and building a bond with them can Pokémon unleash miraculous strength."

Kai did not really understand, but he felt there was great wisdom contained in those words.

When they returned to Sweetwater Village, the villagers had already learned that Kai would be going to Veilstone Gym as an apprentice to train.

They all came forward to send him off, bringing out rare ingredients they had gathered from the mountains.

The villagers scraped together bits and pieces, then gathered another ten thousand in the village chief’s hands.

The village chief handed the ten thousand to Julian.

"Gym Leader Veyne, consider this ten thousand Kai’s fee for becoming an apprentice at the Gym."

"And these ingredients too. Please don’t look down on them. Take them all back and eat them. From last night’s meal, I could tell Gym Leader Veyne is someone who knows how to eat and cook."

"These ingredients we gathered from Verdant Cloud Mountain are all treasures. When sent to Veilstone City, many chefs say they like them."

Julian really could not resist the temptation of rare ingredients.

"I’ll accept everything. Everyone, please rest assured. I will do my utmost to train Kai!"

Kai was so moved that he shed tears.

"I’ll study properly under Master and strive to become a famous Trainer, so the village’s apples can sell for the same high price as Mt. Coronet Reds!"

The villagers’ actions moved Kai deeply. Julian felt that if there was an opportunity, Kai might even dare to send the Mightyena that guarded the village chief’s house to Officer Jenny as a police dog.

After returning to Veilstone Gym, Kai’s first task was to pick up a hoe and dig a pond in the empty land behind Veilstone Gym.

Julian placed wooden stakes at all four corners of the pond.

Kai’s eyes widened.

"Master, how long is this going to take to dig? Shouldn’t we hire an excavator to come and do the work?"

Julian asked in return, "Kai, do you know which type of Pokémon construction teams have the most of?"

Kai thought for a moment.

"It seems to be Fighting type."

Julian nodded.

"Digging the pond is the goal, but the process is also training. Next, watch my movements and learn how to correctly use your muscles while digging and carrying soil."

For Fighting-type Pokémon, joining a construction team was like a musclehead going to a worksite to carry bricks.

Both were for training muscles.

Earning money was only the secondary goal.

At first, Kai was still somewhat unused to this digging method that mobilised the muscles of the whole body.

His movements often went wrong.

By the time the sky darkened, under Julian’s guidance, he had already mastered it completely.

All the Pokémon in Veilstone Gym also participated in the construction of the pond.

It counted as an unusual form of team building, letting everyone form a whole through the process of building the pond.

If there was anyone among the Pokémon present who had the most experience with construction work, it was definitely Machamp.

When Darius was young, Machamp had often gone with him to work on construction sites.

Now that they were building a pond, Machamp suggested that they still had to find a professional construction team.

Relying only on this group of people and Pokémon, they could not handle the pond’s drainage system.

This was the city, not a village. There was no way to create an inlet and outlet by connecting it to a river.

Julian nodded.

"Then we’ll hire people!"

While Julian was working hard to build a pond for the sake of inviting Gengar over to play...

Gengar lay in the pool, looking up at the blue sky and the white clouds drifting by from time to time.

Yet Gengar was not as happy as before.

In Gengar’s heart, he kept occasionally thinking of Julian’s praise and strokes.

Gengar remembered that Julian had said he would come see him in a few days, and he could not help beginning to look forward to it.

There was also Julian’s big stew.

Gengar spat out a bright red apple and took a bite, easing the longing in his heart for the big stew.

A Magikarp leapt out of the water, immediately carrying Gengar’s thoughts away.

Blue light flashed in Gengar’s eyes, and Magikarp was instantly controlled and thrown into the sky.

Kekekeke, I really am too evil!

Magikarp landed accurately in the pool at the mountain peak. The water surface suddenly flashed with white light.

A fierce Gyarados poked its huge head out of the water and released a roar filled with anger and joy.
