The surrounding Hakamo-o and Jangmo-o looked at Julian’s Hakamo-o in shock as well.
There was even a hint of admiration in their eyes.
This was the first time they had seen a Hakamo-o, not even a Kommo-o, possess enough strength to contend with Totem Kommo-o.
Dragon Pokémon were born to admire the strong, whether they were on the same side or not.
Dragon-type infighting dealt double damage. That alone showed the combative nature of Dragon-type Pokémon.
At the same time, they admired strength even more.
Totem Kommo-o roared and began using Dragon Dance for the first time.
On all of Poni Island, he would not allow another Dragon-type Pokémon this powerful to exist besides him!
"Don’t give him the chance. Outrage!"
Cynthia frowned.
This was an open trap.
If Hakamo-o wanted to interrupt him, he had to go up and fight Totem Kommo-o directly.
If he did not interrupt him, Totem Kommo-o would complete Dragon Dance and gain even greater strength.
No matter what Hakamo-o chose, it would benefit Totem Kommo-o.
To have held the Totem position for so long, Kommo-o was not stupid.
He had simply gone too long without properly moving his body.
When Hakamo-o approached, Totem Kommo-o immediately swung Dragon Claw.
The claw...
Struck the scales on Hakamo-o’s arm.
Then slid right off them.
Totem Kommo-o’s eyes widened.
That feeling was wrong!
Julian had taught him some techniques for dispersing force.
By applying force at a clever angle, he could guide the enemy’s limb off course, making their strength spill harmlessly into empty space and preventing their attack from taking effect.
Although Totem Kommo-o had the Fighting type, he leaned more towards battling with Dragon-type moves.
That had created openings that should not have existed.
But a Totem was still a Totem!
Totem Kommo-o quickly realised his mistake.
His body shone with metallic light.
Julian frowned slightly.
He was not afraid of Totem Kommo-o attacking wildly.
What he feared was Totem Kommo-o raising his defence and switching to counterattacks.
Totem Kommo-o’s stamina was too great. Hakamo-o could not outlast him.
Hakamo-o grinned.
"Roar?"
Totem Kommo-o’s expression immediately changed, and he let out an angry roar as he burst into Outrage.
Purple light shone across his entire body as he charged towards Hakamo-o again.
With every movement, powerful energy poured out without restraint.
A mouthful of Dragon Pulse blasted a huge crater directly into the ground.
Cold sweat slid down Hakamo-o’s forehead.
He had not expected his taunt to work this well.
Toxicroak’s trash talk really was useful.
Cynthia looked curiously at Julian.
"What exactly did Hakamo-o say? Totem Kommo-o is actually this angry?"
The corner of Julian’s mouth twitched.
Maintaining Aura communication with Hakamo-o, Julian had naturally heard what Hakamo-o said.
"He said, Iron Defense? That turtle shell is the power you said could kill me?"
Even Julian did not know when Hakamo-o had learned to talk trash.
Compared to the move Taunt, which forcefully messed with the opponent’s emotions, mocking them with trash talk was actually even more effective.
Totem Kommo-o stomped down, tearing another crack through the earth.
His arms chopped down, and flying chunks of rock knocked Hakamo-o away.
Totem Kommo-o roared and suddenly whipped his tail out.
The taunt had worked too well.
It had drawn out Totem Kommo-o’s strength.
Like a torn rag, Hakamo-o was sent flying.
He rolled a long distance across the ground.
It was Hakamo-o’s first time using taunts, so it was normal for him not to know how far was too far.
Totem Kommo-o quietly looked at Hakamo-o.
After being struck by his Outrage, he did not believe Hakamo-o could still stand.
Julian clenched his fist.
"Hakamo-o, stand up. I believe in you!"
Hakamo-o supported himself with both hands against the ground and shakily stood up.
Surprise flashed through Totem Kommo-o’s eyes. He had not expected Hakamo-o to truly withstand it.
But there was no way Hakamo-o could withstand this next move!
Gathering all his power, Totem Kommo-o spat out a enormous purple light wave.
This Dragon Pulse contained a hundred years of his training!
Could Hakamo-o block it?
Julian shouted, "Hakamo-o, Protect!"
A green barrier formed. Hakamo-o raised both arms, resisting the endless surge of Dragon Pulse.
Seeing that he could not break through Protect, Totem Kommo-o roared and increased his energy output.
Dragon Pulse instantly doubled in thickness!
Cracks appeared across the green barrier, and it was pushed backwards, carving a trench through the ground.
But although it cracked, it did not shatter!
After firing for nearly a full minute, Totem Kommo-o finally stopped.
He moved his jaw twice.
If Dragon Pulse would not work, then he would attack with Dragon Claw!
No matter how thick a shield was, it could not stop his incomparably sharp dragon claws!
Totem Kommo-o closed in and swung Dragon Claw wildly.
Julian gritted his teeth and said, "Hakamo-o, defend with Dragon Claw!"
Hakamo-o was already like a candle in the wind, swaying beneath Totem Kommo-o’s storm of dragon claws.
From time to time, he extended Dragon Claw and knocked Totem Kommo-o’s attacks off course.
Totem Kommo-o was in no hurry.
He toyed with Hakamo-o, wanting to see how long Hakamo-o could endure.
Hakamo-o’s breath failed to keep up for a moment, and Totem Kommo-o directly struck him into the air with one claw.
Then he whipped his tail again and slammed Hakamo-o into the ground.
Looking at Hakamo-o lying motionless in the dust, Totem Kommo-o smiled.
Weren’t you arrogant just now?
Why aren’t you getting up to keep fighting?
Is this strength enough to kill you?
Hakamo-o’s claws moved slightly.
Then he slowly raised his head.
Supporting himself with both hands, Hakamo-o stood up again!
Cynthia frowned.
"Julian, Hakamo-o can’t keep going like this. If he takes another hit like that, it really could cost him his life."
Julian’s hand tightened.
Gallade had already stepped forward, his blades half-drawn, waiting only for Julian’s order.
For one moment, Julian almost gave it.
Then Hakamo-o turned his head.
His body was shaking. His scales were cracked. Every breath sounded rough and broken.
But his eyes were still burning.
"Roar!"
Julian froze.
He understood.
Eight years...
From the little Jangmo-o who had followed him home, to the Hakamo-o who had trained until his scales shattered again and again. Eight years of sweat, wounds, frustration and mornings where he still got up to train before anyone else.
All of it had led here.
Now.
In front of the Totem Kommo-o of Poni Canyon.
If Hakamo-o stepped back here, even if he survived, something in his heart would never be the same again.
Julian slowly lowered his hand.
Gallade glanced at him, then withdrew his blades.
Cynthia looked at Julian.
"Julian..."
Julian did not look away from Hakamo-o.
His voice was low, but steady.
"I know."
He clenched his fist against his chest.
"Hakamo-o."
Hakamo-o straightened slightly.
"We didn’t come this far by being protected every time things became dangerous."
Julian’s Aura began to stir and his gaze became firmer by the second.
His eyes brightened with blue light.
"You’ve been waiting for this battle since the day you first chose to follow me."
Hakamo-o’s claws dug into the ground.
"So fight."
Julian’s voice rose.
"Fight with everything you’ve got!"
The Aura around him surged forward, wrapping around Hakamo-o like a familiar warmth.
"I believe in you!"
Hakamo-o raised his head and roared.
It was not pain.
It was not fear.
It was pure belief.
His body trembled, then forced itself upright.
Come on!
Move!
Body, answer me!
In an instant, dazzling light bloomed from Hakamo-o’s body.
Hakamo-o’s body began to lengthen.
The heart-shaped scale on his head disappeared completely, replaced by an armour-like structure formed from rows of fine scales.
Sharp tooth-like protrusions grew from both sides of his upper and lower jaw, making the outline of his face even more intimidating.
The steel-like scales covering his entire body made Kommo-o look like a mighty general.
The scales on his tail specialised into layered structures capable of producing sound, used to intimidate enemies.
Compared with an ordinary Kommo-o, which was around one metre sixty...
Julian’s Kommo-o was nearly two metres tall.
He raised his head and roared, and the scales across his body gave a crisp, thunderous ringing, a monstrous aura emerging.
"ROOOOOAAARRRR!"
A hint of wariness flashed through Totem Kommo-o’s eyes.
