[Poison: 0.32]

That was Julian’s current Poison affinity.

This simulation had failed too quickly, and he had only gained 0.05 Poison affinity from it.

Julian even suspected that Croagunk not evolving was partly because he was being dragged down by Julian’s extremely low Poison affinity.

After personally experiencing how a Poison-type Pokémon condensed poison inside its body and drove that poison, his understanding of Toxic deepened considerably.

In the Toxic manual, there had been a mention of ancient people absorbing deadly poison to train.

Using Poison-type Pokémon that had mastered Toxic to assist in training focused on strengthening the Trainer’s own battle power.

Julian could not tell whether this behaviour was putting the cart before the horse, or opening up a new path.

The Toxic manual had only briefly mentioned it and did not introduce the detailed training method.

It felt somewhat like the poison arts in wuxia stories, something like the Five Poisons Sect.

Julian’s idea of having Croagunk use toxins to strengthen his muscles had been inspired by that poison art introduction.

Most of the materials needed to make the toxin-enhancing medicine could be bought on the commercial street.

But the remaining poisonous materials could only be purchased at the Pokémon Centre.

He also needed to use the Centre’s professional instruments to refine them and create the medicine.

Julian first got up and used his notebook to write down the formula he had created.

If he slept and forgot the formula, that would be a huge loss.

Early the next morning, he went to the commercial street to buy materials.

Then he headed to the Pokémon Centre, purchased poisonous ingredients from Nurse Joy, and rented the professional equipment.

Nurse Joy nodded.

"Judging from the materials you bought, Gym Leader Veyne, are you making medicine to enhance Croagunk’s toxicity?"

Julian nodded.

"That’s right. Because the toxicity is high, I need to use a professional laboratory and equipment."

Nurse Joy said, "Let me help. I’ve made some supplements for Poison-type Pokémon before, and I’m more familiar with using those instruments."

Julian smiled and asked, "Wouldn’t that trouble you too much?"

She shook her head.

"There aren’t any Trainers battling right now, so I don’t need to perform treatment."

He smiled and nodded.

"Then I’ll trouble you, Nurse Joy."

On the way to the laboratory, Nurse Joy introduced, "Recently, there’s a fairly tricky mission, but the reward is quite good."

"I think it suits you, Gym Leader Veyne. It involves dealing with a group of Combee that left a flower garden. Because Combee are rather precious, they can’t be captured through battle."

"You need to use a safe method to bring them back to the flower garden. I wonder whether you’re willing to take it?"

It sounded difficult, but Julian planned to try.

He asked, "Is there a time limit?"

Nurse Joy shook her head.

"No. As long as you bring back fifteen or more Combee, you can receive the base fee of two hundred thousand. If it’s fewer than fifteen, it will be five thousand per Combee."

"For every additional Combee beyond fifteen, you’ll receive another ten thousand. There are fifty Combee in total. If you can bring all of them back, the client is willing to pay one million."

Julian nodded. This staged reward system was very reasonable.

"When do I need to go?"

Nurse Joy said, "If you have something to do today, then tomorrow. If you don’t have anything today, then it would be best to go today."

Julian nodded, planning to handle today’s four challengers before going to the mission location to take a look.

With Nurse Joy’s help, the toxin-enhancing medicine was made very smoothly.

The finished product was sealed into ten-millilitre test tubes.

They made thirteen bottles in total.

Nurse Joy smiled and said, "To prevent leakage, it would be better to store them at the Pokémon Centre. After Croagunk drinks one bottle, the effect should last three to seven days."

Julian nodded and released Croagunk from his Poké Ball.

He picked up a bottle and handed it to him.

"Croagunk, drink this."

Croagunk accepted the test tube and drank it in one go.

A burning sensation surged from his throat all the way into his stomach.

The mushrooms he had eaten yesterday were a little like this medicine, but the mushrooms could only be counted as mildly spicy.

This medicine was violently spicy.

It was uncomfortable, but Croagunk felt as if his body had come alive.

Julian released blue light that shone over his body.

"With this medicine helping you, your evolution should go more smoothly."

Croagunk nodded firmly.

He had the same feeling.

"Thank you for the help, Nurse Joy."

Nurse Joy asked in surprise, "Gym Leader Veyne, are you using Aura?"

Julian nodded.

"I didn’t expect Nurse Joy to recognise Aura."

She smiled and waved her hand.

"Actually, I have a friend who also possesses Aura. I’ve seen him use it before."

Julian asked curiously, "May I ask who this friend of yours is?"

"His name is Riley. He calls himself an Aura Guardian. Right now, he’s travelling through Sinnoh to help people who need help while training his Aura."

"A while ago, he seemed to have reached Stark Mountain and planned to stay there with Lucario for a period of training."

"If Riley knew there was another person who could use Aura, he would definitely rush to Veilstone City excitedly to meet you."

Stark Mountain was among the islands in northeastern Sinnoh.

Julian remembered that Stark Mountain seemed to have a Heatran sealed inside it.

It really was a good training location.

He smiled.

"I would also very much like to exchange experiences in using Aura with another Aura Guardian."

Nurse Joy nodded.

"I’ll call Riley and tell him about this, and invite him to come to Veilstone City."

Julian recalled Croagunk.

"Then I’ll take my leave first. The challengers are about to arrive."

When he returned to Veilstone Gym, Croagunk jumped out of his Poké Ball on his own.

After drinking the toxin-enhancing medicine, his overly vigorous energy needed to be vented through high-intensity training as soon as possible.

Goodra did not need to deal with challengers, so the two of them could coordinate and train in the backyard.

Croagunk was too riled up. Julian did not dare send him into battle either.

He was worried Croagunk would leave the challengers with a lasting bad impression.

Combusken had only just evolved, so this was perfect for him to familiarise himself with his new body through battle.

People who could use Aura were far too rare.

Even in Riley’s family, not everyone inherited the talent for Aura.

His family branches lived across Johto, Kanto, and Sinnoh.

Fortunately, among the three branches, at least one person in every generation awakened the talent.

The line of Aura Guardians had not been broken.

In Riley’s generation, there was only Riley himself.

After receiving Nurse Joy’s message, he immediately decided to set off for Veilstone City.

As for Combusken, who was about to be entrusted with an important task by Julian, he was currently happily sitting on the ground, grabbing handfuls of food and stuffing them into his mouth.

He had no idea that four challengers today meant he needed to fight all four battles.

And he would be the lead in every single one!

Julian was not worried at all that Combusken would complain.

Looking at him eating, he smiled and said, "Combusken, perform well in today’s Gym challenges. If you satisfy me, I’ll give you an extra meal!"

Even though he ate and drank well every single day, Combusken was still like Team Rocket after starving through three days, his eyes filled with longing for a feast.
