Julian opened the jeep door and smiled at Lucario.
"Lucario, you should know how to use Aura to scan the environment and lock onto my position, right?"
Lucario nodded in confusion.
Julian got into the car and closed the door.
"Then sense my Aura and run after me all the way back to Veilstone City. This is your first training task."
Lucario: ???
Are you serious?
Although Lucario did not know exactly how far it was from the Great Marsh to Veilstone City, he did know that journeys humans used cars for were generally not short.
Looking at Lucario standing there blankly, Julian continued.
"I’ll drive off first. Use Aura to lock onto my position. Count to sixty, then set off."
"Do you understand?"
Only then did Lucario come back to his senses and nod.
Once Aura sensing was included, this training instantly became high-end.
And its difficulty rose sharply!
Lucario had felt that the training of using Ripple Sprint to run back to Veilstone City did not have much meaning.
Now that there was an additional requirement, he finally felt the training was somewhat interesting.
Julian smiled and tapped two fingers to his forehead like a salute.
"I’ll use Aura to watch over you. Don’t worry about getting lost."
"Training begins."
Julian drove almost a kilometre away before Lucario’s Aura finally began moving.
Lucario was very fast and quickly closed the distance between them.
That would not do. If the distance was too close, the training would be pointless.
Julian pressed the accelerator and once again pulled away from Lucario.
He kept the distance between the jeep and Lucario at around one kilometre.
After driving over a hundred kilometres, Julian noticed that Lucario’s speed had begun to drop.
So he also controlled the jeep’s speed to roughly match Lucario’s.
Less than two minutes later, he discovered that Lucario had actually started speeding up again.
Julian smiled slightly.
This Lucario was quite proud.
Of course Lucario had pride!
Who was Lucario?
He was the Pokémon of Cynthia, an Elite Four member!
Together with Garchomp, he had slaughtered his way across major arenas!
He had won battle after battle for Cynthia.
Now, he had been temporarily sent to Julian’s side to study.
Although Julian had indeed proven that he was a genuine Aura master, the training he proposed seemed far too childish compared to the training Cynthia had led Lucario through before.
Running after a jeep?
What kind of training was that?
Even with Aura tracking added, Lucario still wanted to prove to Julian that he, Lucario, was not inferior to anyone in this life!
He had slowed down only to catch his breath.
But Julian slowing down was looking down on him!
A mere jeep. Watch me take it down!
In one breath, Lucario ran for almost another fifty kilometres.
This time, he completely lost control of his body. Forcing himself to speed up had caused his stamina to be consumed ahead of schedule.
According to Julian’s estimate, Lucario’s stamina should have been completely enough to run all the way to Veilstone City.
But now, with the journey only just past halfway, Lucario had blown his stamina.
This Lucario really is inferior~
Julian turned the jeep around. Soon, he saw Lucario staggering as he ran. He stopped the car in front of him.
Opening the door, he said, "Get in."
Lucario felt ashamed, but still climbed into the jeep while panting heavily.
Julian started the car again and calmly commented, "Rest properly and reflect on why you failed this training."
"The growth of Aura lies in strength, but even more in the growth of the heart. Since I proposed guiding your Aura training, I definitely wouldn’t arrange meaningless training for you."
"Pride is your greatest enemy. A qualified Aura Guardian must first learn humility!"
Although Lucario was already exhausted like a dead dog, Julian’s words still carved themselves deeply into his heart, making him involuntarily clench his paws.
When they returned to Veilstone Gym, Julian was pleasantly surprised to discover that despite only having been gone for a few days, the Gym’s swimming pool had already been completed.
Seeing him return, Kai excitedly stepped forward to welcome him.
"Master, you’re back!"
Julian nodded.
"How has training with Geodude been recently?"
Kai nodded.
"Very good. Under Master Machamp’s guidance, Geodude has already learned Brick Break and is currently learning Thunder Punch and Fire Punch."
Having an elder in the family was like having a treasure.
Machamp truly was the stabilising pillar of Veilstone Gym.
Julian patted Kai’s shoulder.
"Very good. Keep it up."
Kai continued reporting, "Yesterday afternoon, the reservoir was just completed. The construction team said the pool needs to sit for one week before water can start being stored."
"The old Gym Leader has paid the construction team the remaining balance. He accepted one Trainer’s challenge earlier and is now playing games in the break room."
Julian nodded. Once the reservoir was filled with water, he would invite Gengar down from the mountain to come play at his home.
After discovering that Julian had returned, Darius was even more excited than Kai.
He stopped playing games and rushed out of the break room, grabbing Julian’s hand and crying with tears streaming down his face.
"Julian! You’re finally back! You have no idea what kind of life I’ve been living these past few days. I had to receive two or three challengers every day. It was far too painful!"
"Since you’re back, tomorrow’s challengers are yours to deal with. I’m going to the Veilstone Game Corner. I heard they added new prizes these past two days."
"The latest grand prize is a rare Pokémon from the Kalos region. It’s called... Goomy! Right, Goomy!"
"You stay at the Gym and receive challengers properly. Watch your dad win the grand prize back for you!"
Julian took out a Poké Ball and released Goodra.
"Goodra, this is my home. From now on, you’ll live here together with me."
Darius blinked.
"You caught a new Pokémon? But from the look of it, it doesn’t seem to be a Fighting-type Pokémon."
Julian nodded.
"That’s right. Goodra really isn’t a Fighting type. She’s Dragon and Steel type. And she’s the final evolution of the grand prize you mentioned, Goomy!"
He widened his eyes.
"Son, you caught a Dragon-type Pokémon. You’re not planning to change Veilstone Gym into a Dragon-type Gym, are you?"
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"Are you going to object?"
The old man shook his head.
"As long as you want to, I have no objection. The Gym will be passed down to you sooner or later. If you don’t plan to persist with Veilstone Gym’s tradition, Dad supports you!"
"So, can you support Dad too and let me go to the Game Corner?"
Julian shook his head helplessly.
"Fine. Go."
He had originally planned to have his dad cover for another day while he went up the mountain to see Gengar and Elekid.
Now he could only receive the Trainers who had already booked challenges first, then find time to go up the mountain.
Only then did he notice the silent Lucario beside Julian.
"You caught Lucario too, and you still say you’re not changing the Gym’s type!?"
Julian shook his head and explained, "This is Cynthia’s Lucario. I’m only helping Lucario train his Aura."
Darius widened his eyes.
Helping an Elite Four member raise a Pokémon.
Julian no longer simply had the potential to become an Elite Four member.
He was going to take off!
Champion!
Definite Champion potential!
He had not expected their old Veyne family to actually produce a future Champion!
